Why not? How could it hurt? Just tell him there's no pressure as the team has no chance to win the cup anyhow.
I think Hagens would have to really screw up or show that he doesn't know how to protect himself (a la Matt Poitras) to be left off the roster for the playoffs. Of the group of forwards who look to fill the 12th forward spot, he is the option with the best skillset, highest IQ, and most upside, and I don't think it's close. Bottom line- he can make the team better than all the other options.
“It’s a completely different beast” is a pretty arbitrary point imo. It’s overly cautious and subjective. Just play him. The Bruins are NOT guaranteed to make the playoffs next year. FL will get a top prospect and be right back in the cup hunt. Most of this forward core is signed through next year and with the amount of career years a repeat performance is not a forgone conclusion. Get him the crucial experience going into next year. This will set him up better for an 82 game season. We need to stop overthinking this. Ice your best lineup and give him the exposure he needs to develop next year.
Sturm will reward the players who have been there most of the year like Steeves and give them Game 1 and 2. Hagens isn't some sort of savior just yet. Sturms gotta keep the peace in the room. If the B's struggle in transition on need a mix up Hagens will come in for Game 3. It would maybe be different if Hagens had 8-10 game sample size. If he pots a couple points against NJ maybe the decision is harder. In my opinion, Hagens playmaking alone is dynamic enough to justify a lineup spot in a team that was struggling to score at the end of the year.
Earning his time is important to his development, as long as he shows he belongs in practice he'll be there. What that translates to is youre not deserved a damn thing, earn your spot. Its a blue collar value that you cant teach, i hate hearing none of you can relaye to that, takes away from the show. Yall generally talk sense but that was a bad take. Nothing in life is guaranteed and you have to keep working for the best if ypu want the best.
I think it makes everyone on the team accountable.
