ELIMINATED: The Red Wings playoff drought reaches 10 years following ANOTHER late blown lead

It’s a story we have become familiar with too much in the last month, the Red Wings have a lead in the 3rd and then fail to seal the deal. Their loss to the New Jersey Devils eliminates them from playoff contention, now an NHL leading 10-year drough. What went wrong in this game, and this season?

  1. So we continue to suck and miss the playoffs again for 10 years in a row. I’ll be more pissed if they do nothing then if thrown anything at the kitchen sink at this point.

  2. Trade Larkin and picks for McDavid. Or offer sheet Bedard. Or trade Raymond for Brady Tkachuk. One of them has to go. We need a new spark in this locker room that has an edge. I want the guy that screams at his team like they’re down 3-1 in the cup finals, not 1000 yard stare Larkin after every loss.

If Copp, Compher, Rasmussen, Appleton, JVR, and Perron are not gone by July then we are officially the Dead Wings 2.0. Nothing but weak jerseys. They are the core this team is built around and why we always lose.

    Give Seider the C already.

  3. Larkin stays bottom six needs help and needs to be better and our defense needs a lil help now and we need a true 2nd line center also need one more good winger on top line

  4. What’s frustrating is the lack of determination, aggression, and sense of urgency. The Devils game was a perfect example. NJ, with nothing to play for, was more than happy to play a low aggression game, and the Wings played like they were more than happy to oblige.

  5. It is literally more worthwhile to talk about "Will Brian Fisher grow the hell outta that moustache to become a Lanny MacDonald doppelgänger?" than anything remotely related to this organization/ embarrassment.

  6. This seemed like the year. Centennial. Fedorov retirement. Sweet ass jerseys. Exciting new rookies. And they failed. Miserably. Look at me. Those aren't even complete sentences. They just have me sputtering sentence fragments over here. There has to be consequences. Someone has to go. Whether that's Larkin or Yzerman or both. At least one of them has to pay the price for this failure. Yzerman failed to put together a playoff team, and Larkin, man….I want to like him. He makes it hard sometimes. I feel like he whines so much. I call him Captain Boo Boo Face. He always looks so pouty when we lose. I'd rather a captain be more angry than pouty. That being said, it would be hard to trade him and get better. I think I'm talking myself into it being Yzerman who has to go. Bring in a new gm, make changes, and if you don't make the playoffs, we'll revisit Larkin next off season.

I love Steve Yzerman as player, but, and it pains me to say this, I've not loved him as gm. I wanted it to work so bad with him, but we can't stifle the growth of the team for feel good nostalgia. I also don't want him as team president. He needs to just be a cherished and revered alum. The league has passed him by.

  7. You guys HAVE to start using your prospects and trading them out for players that can help now. Yzerman isn't leaving. He is still the man. You HAVE to move those prospects and fill whatever need you can do. Get Thomas from St. Louis, PAY THE DAMN PRICE. If its 3 top tier prospects, you pay it.

The problem for you guys… Buffalo, Montreal and now Ottawa are now in the picture. You still have Florida and Toronto that missed the playoffs. You don't have any leeway anymore. You have to push all your chips in now. Larkin is 29 years old, some of the core that were brought in during Yzerman's time, they are getting old now. Detroit has run out of time. It has to be now. Or if it isn't, you have to start selling immediately and not do a Toronto where they waffled on their core pieces and let them go for pennies.

You can't save prospects any longer, move them, fill that 2C hole, fill that top 4 D holes. You need to fill these holes or your going to have teams steam roll you in the east. The east is a wagon now and Detroit has to make a decision. Push hard for the next year or you should start selling while you can.

  8. They need to retool, trying to build around Larkin is never going to work, if you actually think the Red Wings can win the Stanley Cup with Larkin as their 1C and Captain then your a fool.

  9. I don’t want to hear about anyone on this team being a dog ever again unless we’re calling them bitches! 🐕 😂

  10. Larkin's lack of production at even strength can be attributed to having to play against the opposition top line night in night out and not being given 2 quality wingers to play with. They're almost short handed in effect every time his line steps on the ice. That's 100% on Yzerman.

  11. I have no dog in this fight as Colorado fan. But I agree 100% with you. Of course the Detroit core is capable of being a playoff team. You cant tell me the Bruins core is even as good as Detroit-let alone better. Certainly not in pure top end talent,& potential. Now they have Pastamark,& I'm not sure Detroit has anybody quite as good as him. Certainly nobody with his resume.(except Kane but we know he's a shell of his former self though he's still pretty good) Sometimes ya are partially a victim of circumstance. If Detroit was still in the West they would've ended their playoff drought this yr. Ya missed by tiebreaker another yr.But having said that-theres also clearly something mental going on with how they've blown it repeatedly in very similar ways in multiple seasons. Both can be true at same time. Different teams do seem to develop mental blocks over different stages,& sometimes never get past it. But it's almost always more than just 1 thing.

I think Detroits stars do have a mental block right now about blowing playoff spots in March. But it's also cuz your best players don't have much help. There's not only more pressure on them than most teams cuz your bottom 6 gives them no help but they probably also get more worn out,& are more injury prone because they have to shoulder so much of the burden. 2017-19 AVS were basically a 1 line team with not a great blueline-& our core was mostly playoff inexperienced. We KNEW they couldn't win the Cup but getting in was important,& every playoff game was invaluable experience for their progression,& future. But had Detroit just closed a few games that were all but over-(& a few where maybe you lose in OT but should've at least got 1 pt)- theyd be in. Now I think their roster flaws,& depth (& maybe fragile psyche) would've been exposed in the playoffs. But shouldve happened in the playoffs in 1st round series with like Carolina-say you lose in 5. Is your core good enough,& have the leadership,& mental toughness to be a CUP CONTENDER-thats a completely different story,& remains to be seen.

Maybe Larkin as example-can't be the best player &/or top leader on a Championship team. There are great players who can't be the best player & especially top leader on a title team. (Austin Matheuws,Mich Marner,& others in my opinion). But doesn't mean they can't be a big part of a championship team eventually. And it's a totally different question & argument whether your core guys can be the best players,& leaders on a playoff team-i think that's clearly yes. Nobody will ever convince me Boston or LA have a more talented core than Detroit. I think to truly compete for a Cup you need more grit, leadership, depth & top end talent-all of it. Either from outside or young guys developing. But ya also need playoff experience & progress to win it all. Utah,Philly,Anah,& Buf don't have much REAL chance to win the Cup THIS YEAR in my opinion. But they can starting next yr,& playoff experience will be huge for their development this yr. I say same for SA Spurs THIS YEAR.Doesn't mean they'll lose 1st round or be an easy out but teams that playoff inexperienced rarely win it all in pro sports.

That experience even makes a difference in college sports. My Denver Pioneers in college hockey,& UConn in cbb being the current exhibit A & B. But those young,& inexperienced teams usually grow,& learn alot from that 1st run through failure,& experience. (OKC 2 yrs ago another example) Happened for our Nuggets & Avs-who both had to learn painful playoff lessons in tough losses,& devastating injuries in multiple playoffs-before growing into Champions. Our Broncos making 2024 playoffs,& AFC Title game last yr was real progress-I never believed we could win SB 60 last yr. Real shame for Detroit is their core & young guys could've gained invaluable & necessary playoff experience just by getting in-even if ya got swept. Ya usually have to fail a few times,& learn how to win 1st. Nobody reasonable is gonna be mad if Anah,Utah,Philly or Buf lose 1st round this yr but real pressure starts NEXT YEAR. Same would've been true of Det. But when you repeatedly fail to even get in that's a whole different issue. SJ missing is totally fine cuz they are in similar development spot Detroit was 3-4 yrs ago.

  12. It’s just so frustrating I almost didn’t watch the Devils game but I thought WTF. I feel like I wasted three hours of a really nice day.

  13. Wings need to Go back to the Western Conference. Never should have left. Have not been as good since they left or were forced to leave.

  14. Cat needs to be the center of the “core” Larkin didn’t do it, razor didn’t do it copp didn’t do it. Gibson couldn’t save us. If they don’t shake this down to the studs on the off season it’s time for a front office change.. I get Gibby needed to get acclimated to a new team in the 1st 5 games but WHY ARE WE IN A SPOT THIS FAR INTO THE “rebuild” where we are acclimating a new GOALIE! this team is no closer to the playoffs then it was 4 years ago.. burn it all down. No grit. No passion. I’m sick of seeing Larkin flopping trying to draw a penalty. Worst captain in wings history

  15. Teams like Buffalo and Montreal don’t keep signing old has beens like the Wings keep doing, they actually let their young players play and develop. Idk why Yzerman is so averse to that, clearly the old veterans like Copp, Compher, Rasmussen, etc are not getting the job done and there’s no benefit to blocking the kids playing them.

  16. How about trade some of the 40 players you've drafted in the last 4 years. You don't need to rebuild again, just use your assets and get some gamers.

  17. keep building is the best option.. overpaying is the leaf recipe… and dont need to blow it up yet..

  18. You can't get rid of Larkin we would never get what he's worth from the teams that he would want to go to. Unfortunately Patrick Kane is probably going to have to go,And for now your top three would be finny Raymond and Kasper. Finny is a natural center and I believe one day he will be the captain.Kasper is the world-class passer and I believe him and Emmett could really gel. We are starting to see scoring defenseman on this roster which makes the team more balanced.
