The season is officially over for the Detroit Red Wings.
With two games still remaining, the Red Wings have been eliminated from playoff contention—marking 10 straight years without postseason hockey in Detroit. A decade-long drought for one of hockey’s most historic franchises… and a fanbase that’s had enough.
In this episode, we react to the elimination and break down what went wrong this season as the Wings once again fall short in the ultra-competitive Eastern Conference.
We also highlight some bright spots for the future, including Max Plante taking home the Hobey Baker Award and Sebastian Cossa/Augustine getting opportunities at the pro level with the Grand Rapids Griffins, including Augustine’s first professional start.
Looking ahead, the focus shifts fully to the offseason—and the questions are only getting louder. Is Steve Yzerman’s philosophy the right one for building a contender in the Atlantic Division? Has the patient approach run its course, or does this team still need more time?
We dive into what changes could be coming, who might stay, who could go, and whether Detroit leans into a youth movement or swings big with a major trade to finally shift the trajectory of this franchise.

I can still hear the boos ….
The Red Wings are done for. It seems like the last 10 years the Wings have to have damn near 50% of the team Michigan born or Michigan roots. With Team USA development being in Michigan. Millions of dollars have been spent on youth development in the State of Michigan. And it almost seems like the Red Wings are invested the in development throughout the state. That being said, when the wings insure these camps and development in the state are the pristine development camps to go to then they have to prove it by drafting these players raised in Michigan that went through these camps. And mostly they all suck compared to the elite NHLers. (The Michigan players on the wings) Because we have zero great Michigan born and raised players. We have middle 6 Michigan players. No line 1 Michigan players. That being said it seems like we narrowed the scouting from all over the world, to mainly just Michigan players being looked at first. Because they are financially invested throughout the state for development. What would it say if all these development camps and teams that you can work hard to be selected to get on these teams while growing up in Michigan. And then the local NHL team never selects these players to be on the team?? I swear this is one of the main reasons why certain players on this team regardless of how they play. Other teams would have traded our to 9 forwards by now over the years. It's weird how we went from a great talent pool of players from ALL OVER THE WORLD. To half damn near half the team from Michigan. Because these Michigan players are the best in the world???? Nope that's not it. It's because they have to have them on the team because of development and camp investments throughout the State of Michigan. Or am I just crazy? It seems like this is the biggest issue behind the scenes to me.
There is way to much to say and this team isn’t worth a crash out typed out.
Buyout compher, waive ras.
Go after lafreniere from the rangers to be your top line lw.
Keep Kane and JVR.
Perron can go.
Bring back MBN and ASP next season and see what the kids can do.
Also they need to bring Cossa up next season and let talbot walk.
This team is like going to get a massage and before the happy ending is about come, she stops and walks away. Can’t say this on stream I know, yet this is how this season went.
31:37 it seemed like Cat stayed with Kane, so Kane could get his record. And they are the highest American due with points all time aren't they? Probably has something to do with it.
Bring back Mike Babcock he will straighten this group out.
I've been saying this the past few days, Yzerman would never do it because he finds it unethical, but he should attempt to put out an offer sheet for Connor Bedard in the off-season. It would cost the Red Wings 4 straight years of 1st round draft picks, but it would be worth it. The offer would have to be very high, and it almost seems as if the Red Wings are cheapskate's. It would have to be high enough so the Blackhawks wouldn't be able to match it. It'll never happen though. But it would solve a LOT of issues. Then you don't have to break up the core. Dylan Larkin could be moved to the second line. Because as it's been discussed, his no move clause wouldn't get us a large return. You don't trade Seider. DeBrincat got us 40 goals, no need to trade him. That leaves you with Lucas Raymond. Teams would want him in a trade return. You could trade him for Jason Robertson. But if you want to keep the core, then send an offer to Bedard. Make him the highest paid player in the league. He'll come here if the offer is right.
It's true. Yzerman is pretty much Holland 2.0
debrincat and kane both care more about going home and checking each others oil.
Sabres fan here. We fired Kevyn Adams because we thought the Yzerplan beat out the Adams "family" plan. Detroit decided to go with older vets that Yzerman thought would bring Detroit along in the development process faster. But it turns out Adams was bang on when he decided to go with a faster youthful team second only to Montreal and that's because we have a few greybeards. The last Sabres game I went to was the Detroit game and you guys smoked us and that worried me. You say Yzerman needs to stay but he can't be afraid to trust the youth
What have this older group done to warrant keeping them? This team needs some serious energy and desire. I’ll take mistakes and growth over watching a bunch of fossils fold all the time. There’s nothing but downside with these guys. They can’t score, they’re soft and slow. That’s not even entertaining to watch. Why on Earth Rasmussen was ever given an extension is mind boggling. Him and Compher need to go asap. I would rather let go of Kane a year yearly than to watch him tied to DeBrincat and handcuffing this roster any further. I love DeBrincat but if he only wants to be here if Kane’s here than that needs to be addressed.
I’m not turning on Yzerman. I’m fucking pissed tho.
Lmao the clear bias against the Sens is insane. Look at every single one of the underlying stats and you’ll see that they’re MILES better than the wings. Virtually top in all defensive metrics, one of the best 5 on 5 xG% in the league, tied for 4th most regulation wins in the league, and all of that with incredibly poor goaltending for more than half of the year but still making it. They’re also, as you mentioned, younger. None of this is to say that they have an easy path through playoffs, but I don’t think it’s as close as you think it is
Being honest even if the Wings got into the Playoffs does anyone see them doing anything but get swept
You talk about all of the talent and grand rapids and you're missing one person. Coach dan watson look at the turnaround he did with that team in 2 years. Imagine putting him behind Todd McClellan, he's an offensive mastermind and exactly what they need. He's already working with the talent that detroit is going to receive.Who would know them better??? The offensive punch is what they needed. This year they didn't have it. They're also not mentally tough. That's where mcclellan comes in.
Check dan watson's record with the toledo walleye before he came to grand rapids
You got the core four without the playoffs congrats on being the longest standing playoff drought team look at the last 4 yrs the wings were in playoff spots going into February yr after yr they suck Larkin gets hurt and no depth to pull the weight
Ten years gone,…
Clean house.
Dylan Larkin CANNOT be the highest paid player on this team next season if management is seriously trying to end the drought.
How many of us would still have a job after producing no results in the last 7 years? We'd be gone!
Get rid of Yzerplan and send him back to the bolts.
These 🤡 are the biggest Yzerman apologist . DONT SUBSCRIBE ANYONE .
so I dont know why they got JBD and Hamonic. Not a fan of Debrincat, not because he didnt want to stay in Ottawa more when he talked about compete level that's its easy to score 40 goals in a season but some nights its hard to go and play. Like that's your career, show up and show the example to the rest of the team. Gibson played well early in the season. I do remember Ottawa dominating 2 of the 3 first match up where we lost and I was like Detroit is okay but we were just dealing with horrible performance by any goalie that was in net.
To be honest i didnt see this collaspe maybe a few spots down from January cause we knew Tampa was gonna come back at any point they always seem to get better with time.
I think it start with the leaders Larkin, Debrincat good talented players not sure the heart is always there.
That Penalty from Kane vs Minnesota simply unacceptable. Veteran knows better.
Plante should go back to college. Not a high end prospect. James is a typical Yzerman high floor low ceiling prospect.
The 23/24 season was the worst thing to happen to the rebuild. We stacked the roster with NHL players and ended up being fun bad, out scoring problems and got close to the playoffs. From that season on the expectations were high and timeline got shifted. The reality is still we’re a one line and d pair team and we’re expecting vets to play in roles above their skill set. Until we go with youth and bring in minimum 2 top 6 players we’re going no where.
If you listen to Todd all year he’s said the same thing all year there’s a fragility issue, and for me what was the most honest thing said was Todd being mad after the Devils game. He was the only person showing angry and accountability.
Finnie should have NEVER been taken off the first line, McClelland blew that badly
