Well if Gills is hired he would choose his gm. So you must hire him first so if they want sonny Matia then Gillis would have to hire him as Gm. At this point it all about timing with all the new teams looking for management Don't hire one to lose the other it's a tricky balance.
Yes Leafs have some good prospects, but not likely what they need. They need a top defence PAIR, which is not easy to find. They need a 1st line right winger. If they tank, they could fill the need of one of those defensmen. That would put Leafs in a better position going forward. However, Leaf management will likely put ego over intelligence and end up 6 last overall.
I think mehta is a great fit for toronto and would shake things up a good bit, He’s got a golden opportunity here if he wants to come to toronto
Let more Marlies play. This leafs team didn’t earn the right to play out the year.
Don't need a GM, they need a head of hockey ops.
If they want Gillis he should be hired first and have some input to the choice of GM….Myself, i have concerns about Metha, so far he has only been a assistant GM, and i am not sure about a Data Centric guy as a GM,, he may be great with numbers and projections but there is more to being a GM than assesing Data…Leafs may not be the place for him right now, its a harsh, high pressure place for a rookie GM
I know everyone is all over Berube for not dressing Villeneuve but I'm going to cut him some slack on this one, he doesn't want to expose a raw rookie to the chaos that is reality now. The team is consistently being outshot 3 or 4 to 1 and Berube is smart enough to know that the toughest position to play is defence. Villeneuve will get his chance regardless but last night would have been a disaster knowing that the Islanders are battling for the playoffs and just hired a new coach.

Romano never been a gm will be a rookie
New Jersey is way better than the Leafs right now and way closer to being competitive than the Leafs are. They have a core of Jack Hughes 24, Jesper Bratt 27, Nico Hischier 27, Dawson Mercer 24, Luke Hughes 22, Timo Meier 29 and Jonas Siegenthaler 28. with 88$ million spent next year with Simon Nemec and Gritsyuk to sign. They have prospects Seamus Casey Nico Daws Mikhail Yegorov Lenni Hameenaho and Anton Silayev as hopefuls.
They probably need to replace Markstrom but Allen is solid for 30 games a year. Couple oldies in Hamilton 32, Markstrom 36, Dillon 35, Pesce 31. Noesen 33
Got rid of the Palat contract but have too much sunk in Hamilton Luke Hughes Markstrom and Meier 32.8 million.
Jack Hughes if healthy is a bargain as is Bratt.
The Leafs had four or five overpaid, overaged guys and Cowan and Danford and a couple pretty good but injury prone goalies. More holes than players on this lineup and two years in the next three without their first round pick.
The getting outshot is a talent and effort thing.
If Villeneuve is in the line up next year. Leafs will be worse than they are this year.
Stecher is better three or four Leafs defencemen. Your prospects are brutal.
