A Discussion of the Ducks Recent Struggles

Anaheim looked like a likely division winner as recently as a couple of weeks ago. That’s changed with their six game winless skid.

  1. There has been a trend with Anaheim this entire season where the team only thinks they have to play about 40-minutes of the 60-minute game. Usually, Anaheim starts playing around the 10-minute mark of the 1st period after they are down one or two goals. Then the 2nd period is pretty good, and if Anaheim is up going into the 3rd period, they will play until 5-10 minutes are left in the game, where they then think they can coast to the finish line, which usually bites them in the butt, where they give up sloppy goals on turnovers and weak defense. That is why Anaheim has so many come-from-behind wins, but eventually that strategy and luck only lasts so long before it runs out.

  2. I’m a fan of both the kings and the Ducks. I have an aneurysm under different circumstances. Can’t believe that the Ducks are turning from Mighty to roasted. -_-

  3. Both Dostal and Husso have been average to good in most games this season, but its probably hard to keep confidence when your defence leaves you out to dry for multiple chances in just one period. With the eye test, the goaltending is nowhere near the issue or weak if anything they keep the Ducks in the game, its the defensive breakdowns that just kills any momentum Ducks even try to build up and eventually it cascades to everything. There have been some great individual efforts from several youngsters to get a goals scored on during this losing skid alone.

  4. It's very frustrating when we have a game like the last one where a goalie just decides to have an insane game. It feels like our luck with regards to that hasn't been great, but it's certainly not the only problem, as our defence and goaltending hasn't been very good.

  5. As a Sharks fan I honestly think we have a better chance of catching the Ducks than the Preds. They’ve looked that hopeless in the last two weeks, it seems semi-realistic for them to completely fall out (even if LA is the more likely inheritor of third place with their softball schedule)

  6. As a Ducks fan here in the OC, I am completely baffled, depressed and pissed off all at the same time. I’m going to the game tonight and Sunday. I hope we see a different team tonight

  7. Its ok Ducks, join your brethern the Hawks and the Sharks. You are very ahead of schedule with a bright future

  8. Ducks have ZERO defense and that's Verbeek's fault. It's on him 100 percent, he's fired this summer as far as I'm concerned. We also have ZERO leadership on the team. No one respects Gudas, and of course when questioned about it they'll say otherwise to keep up appearances, but rest assured, they have no captain worth following and no prospect Captain to replace which is yet again Verbeek's fault. This team has ALOT of holes and we just don't have the talent to fill them. Lacombe is ass, I don't want to hear anyone defend this clown ass poser. I've watched all Ducks games and he's a liability as far as I'm concerned. Paying a clown like 9 million is exactly why the ducks are floundering, they spend money unwisely and they GIVE AWY their picks for old busted ass defenseman that can't defend. It's not a wonder why they are crashing and burning.

  9. It's been years since they've been in playoffs and so I think the habits of the past years are really affecting their play. I hope they turn it around because it will be a short playoff run if they don't.

  10. It's been driving me nuts how much their struggling, they've worked so hard to be above the playoff line someone's got to step up and be the one to say let's not waste all that effort. They just gotta make one final push and then they can finally get some rest while the league get's ready for playoffs.

  11. Nobody east of Colorado wants ANY west coast, 9 PM puck drop on a school night, team in the playoffs at all. God forbid those cities littered with used needles have to endure a 5:30 – 6:00 PM start time so the rest of the fans can watch the entire game.

  12. Ducks fans should watch the Wild Stars game today. If the Wild lose the game, their game against the Wild may be easier as it will be likely that the Wild sit their top line that night. That said the Wild have a much more rounded team than in past years and may be tough even with their top 3-4 out of the lineup, their new rookie center may also make their debut that night.

  13. Very inconsistent. Probably third and swept. There is also a lot of young talent. Could be capable of a first rd upset.

  14. The Ducks remind me of every young team before they actually won something. They're figuring out what it takes to get to the next level. Hopefully, they don't think this is their year and start throwing away picks and prospects like the Canucks do. Knowing when to make your move is so important. In the offseason, maybe they can add like they did in the late 2000s when they picked up Pronger and Niedermayer. But I'd be very careful. They might need another year after this one to learn how to win in the playoffs before they can make a significant run to the finals.

  15. I MISS CUTTER. The good news is that the effort is still there. 43 shots on goal is nothing to scoff at. But yes, the puck has to actually go in.

  16. I think you need to be careful how you look at shot totals. Montreal takes less shots on goal but their shots are higher quality. Their shoot percentage is over 10%. The Ducks with all those shots are probably like Carolina and they shoot from everywhere and get tons of shots. Montreal has swept the series beating Carolina 3-0 this season. Every single game Montreal has been heavily out shot by the Hurricanes.

Youth plays a factor, but veterans don't really help you either. No matter what you say about veteran's, you need to score and if your scoring is coming from your youth, then in the end they need to be the ones stepping up. And at their young ages, its more about consistency then relying on Veterans. Montreal faced this for several years in a row. Even this year, they would blow so many leads and then fall behind teams and then have to come back and win it. Montreal has 26 come from behind wins this year. The most for any team. But they are getting consistent especially from the back end from Goal tenders to defenseman. They are all young. Dobes is 24, Fowler is 21. The D core is 25 and under for the most part. Its really about consistency and that just means more reps more playing time to build it to stay at a certain level that you expect hockey players.

Last year Montreal has had some losing streaks that stretched to 8 games, several times but they squeaked into the playoffs. This year, they had another 8 game losing streak but it was the only one. Again consistency from the core players playing together. The Ducks with their youth is just as young as Montreal but the youth on the Ducks haven't been playing together as long as Montreal's has. They have a clutch group of 6 players who have played together for 4 years and they have others like Hutson 2 years, Demidov with one that are being insulated by the core. The Ducks don't have this yet.

The Ducks should be very happy with the promise this season brought. They have a good core to build from and they need more consistency from their goal tending and defense. But that will come and obviously they might add to strengthen the roster. But the excuse you can add veterans and help a team grow. I think that is over blown. Hockey has changed. Its a young player's game now. You need to be able to skate and score at a young age now. You have to be an impact player and those become your leaders right away. The Sharks are another example of this change. Montreal has been in the Vanguard of this rush to bring in youth, the Sharks, Ducks and hopefully Chicago can get it together. These are the teams rebuilding and loading up on youth.

To add to what I mean about Veterans. Montreal hasn't added any veterans to fill a top 6 role. Danault you can say is in the top 9 but he was brought in to plug a hole as a left shot faceoff centreman. And they have added on the back end, but its in the bottom pair with Carrier since he is a right shooting defenseman. Even with Dobson, he is 25 when he was traded to Montreal. Not exactly what a veteran people talk about in their 30's. You look at what Detroit did, they added a 33 year old defenseman in Faulk for an unprotected first round pick. Montreal doesn't do stuff like this. In Montreal's case, all their offense comes from their core youth. As they keep bringing more young players in, they all produce like Kapanen who has 22 goals this season as a rookie. The NHL now is all about youth and you have to come in a skate and score. This is the new NHL now.

  17. The team has LOST FIVE A ROW on this home stand and you think they are favored or are going to beat San Jose which is still in the wild card hunt? And if Nashville ( which is already on a run, unlike the Ducks) needs that last game IN THEIR HOME ARENA to clinch that last playoff spot, there is no way they are losing that game.

  18. Over worked goalie, horrible back up goalie, young kids who cant yet handle cruch/desperate time hockey, in effective "veterans" no players with elite scoring top player is 65 pts is not good enough. To many comeback points All these are dragging the ducks down. Ducks need 2 more years before they can be good enough to be contenders or at least make it and get kicked out first round

  19. The Ducks future looks good, but not so much this season.

Their team defence struggles, they give up too many goals.
Outside of Vancouver (297)and Toronto (279) the Ducks have given up the 3 worst amount of goals (276).
S.J(274) is in the exact same boat.
Not taking away from the many good pieces both the Ducks and Sharks have and the leap forward for both teams.

Clean that team defence up and you never know

  20. turn team coverage in defense zone into transition passing up ice for scoring chances; then neutral zone forecheck and puck possession?

  21. Ever since people pointed out the ducks were 1 of 8 teams in the pacific that actually want to make playoffs, they went "no we dont do that here either"

  22. I was telling guys in a GC the other night, with the way how Nashville is winning and LA consistently gain points. Ducks could get pushed out. I think 4 of the guys are Duck fans and they can’t decide if Anaheim will be a first round exit or not in
