What’s Wrong With Tristan Jarry? A Goalie Breakdown

Is Tristan Jarry struggling right now? In this in-depth goalie analysis, we break down Tristan Jarry’s recent performances with the Pittsburgh Penguins and take a closer look at the goals he’s been allowing over his last few games.

Using detailed video breakdowns, I analyze Jarry’s positioning, rebound control, puck tracking, and decision-making to figure out what’s really going wrong. Is this a technical issue, a confidence problem, or something deeper?

We also discuss Jarry’s recent comments about not being in the right mentality, and how the mental side of goaltending can impact performance at the NHL level. If you’re a goalie, coach, or hockey fan, this video gives you real insight into how elite goaltenders can go through tough stretches—and what it actually looks like on the ice.

Whether you’re trying to improve your own game or just want a deeper understanding of NHL goaltending, this breakdown has you covered.

  1. Pens fan here. What's frustrating is that Jarry has the ability to be a top goaltender in the league, and he's shown it. But for other, longer stretches, he looks like this.

  2. Since this video got popular here’s a little more detail: This analysis looked only at his recent games and I found a lot of goals that suggested mental state issues. But after so many comments pointing out that jarry really hasn’t been consistent for a long time, I may do a full dive into his game and look to see if the has habits that lead to inconsistency. Thanks everyone for all the kind comments! And welcome to the team if you’re new here!

  3. Hahahaha dumbass since coming to ed…..hes trash garbage and toxic waste….you got suckered….thanks btw

  4. He just never played behind such a horrific defense … on top of that, no one sees it! Everyone blames the goalie!
    🤣🤣😂😂

  5. Jarry is a first half of the season goalie. The closer to meaningful hockey he gets the worse he is. Rinse and repeat since he passed that puck to Josh Bailey

  6. Elated that Jarry left the Penguins!!! He's been horrifically inconsistent in Pittsburgh. I would actually have preferred a Folding Chair in goal instead of Jarry.

  7. Playing and living in Edmonton is what curses goalies. Playing for a top heavy team that doesn’t give you defensive support. Living in a shitty, cold city sucks the life out of you. Everything about Edmonton, from the climate to the way the team was built, ruins goalies. Plus with the knowledge that they will never win a cup with McDavid, will likely go out in the first round this year, and might not make the playoffs again in what remains of the McDavid era before he finally wakes up and realizes that he has the get the hell out of dodge and take a massive pay cut to go play for a REAL contender…all of that weighs on a goalie. The only worse place to play is in Toronto.

The sad thing is that most Edmontonians and Oilers fans are in total denial about all of this. What’s funny is that as a Flames fan, I called this out years ago about the Oilers, and everything I said has come to pass, and will continue to come to pass. It’s sad that one of the greatest players of hockey of all time will have wasted so much of his life and career in Edmonton, when they were always doomed to go nowhere. Imagine how many cups McDavid would have if he has refused to sign with Edmonton and instead chosen to take a big pay cut from the beginning and played for teams like Colorado or Tampa or Vegas or Boston or Carolina or Dallas or Pittsburgh. What a tragedy.

  8. Jarry was struggling before he moved to Edmonton. That is why he was moved to Edmonton. Thank you Edmonton for taking that salary for the next few years.

  9. He used the same excuse in Pitt, it was in his head. Well Bud, whatever it is, you cant control it and are a terrible goalie. So just retire already. You can do nothing and survive if you manage your money well with what youve already earned.

  10. Pen’s fans knew what was wrong with him awhile ago. As did Pen’s management. Glad they found someone who didn’t.

  11. As someone from Pittsburgh, I can tell you what the issue with Jarry is. Like you said in your video, he has always had questionable footwork, but that isn't his biggest issue. One thing that isn't generally talked about? He has missed some time a couple different times in his career for "personal reasons." I am in the know, and those are the reasons you could guess. I don't want to get on anyone's case or discourage anyone so will put it as delicately as possible; Sometimes changing or adjusting medications can have complications such as difficulty to focus for example. Am sure have people in your life for whom you have seen this. Sometimes you are going to get NHL ALL-Star Jarry. Sometimes, you just aren't. Ever see, and hear, him interviewed after a game? Sometimes he's smiling and energetic. Sometimes he is "down" and even kind of slurring his words.

Here in Pittsburgh, that is one of the reasons you have never heard one of his teammates even HINT that they weren't supportive of him. He is a very nice and likeable guy, and his teammates supported and liked him. After a big move, and then some of the things new teammates have said about him after a tough stretch, am afraid he hasn't quite figured it out in Edmonton yet. I would expect them to give Jarry more of a try next season. Hopefully he can get everything figured out and settled over the summer.

  12. Did Nurse tip that first goal? Not giving Jarry a pass, just looks like the puck was slightly redirected which would make it 3 of those goals totally on the “defense” of the oilers. Guy needs to reach out to Fleury- he had a horrible mental lapse mid career, which was fixed with psychiatric help. I see glimpses of laziness in Jarry’s game as well as a mental breakdown.
