  1. Habs fan here I watched Dipetro play on the spitfires. A while back. He always impressed me I really think he can be a future goalie for you guys

  2. I'm in the firebenning camp. Jim's weakness is signing free agents. If the Canucks are going to take the next step they will need to fill out their roster with quality players around the strong core we have. I don't have faith that Benning is the guy to put the finishing touches on the team.

  3. Canucks fans are way to hard on Juolevi I feel bad for him, he should be a very solid top 4 d man one day that any other team would be greatful to have, ik we shouldve gotten tkacuch but that was years ago come on get over it

  4. I'm very meh Benning at this point. I still think they'll be a good team, it'll just take longer because of the bad contracts. Hope they can pull it together and at least show some spirit by the end of the season so there's something to build off of moving forward. Can't wait until the 2022 offseason, when Eriksson, Roussel, Beagle, and the Luongo recapture are off the books. 15 million free dollars would be nice right about now.

  5. The only reason he’s still here is because he drafted Pettersson and Hughes. Now, they’re both underperforming in Travis Green’s system. Fire Benning.

  6. Armchair gm here. Bending is a better scout or scouting manager than gm.

While video games are mostly useless, he could really use some chel gaming to learn to manage the salary cap and see how different situations will effect the salary of his team going forward.

Too many of his contracts are a year too long on veteran players. Let them walk.

Vancouvers desirability is questionable for players but this can all be managed, get someone who understands the cap.

  7. As much as Benning (or Brackett) have drafted well since 2014 (except for 2014 and 2016), he has been brutal at free agency, and about 50/50 at trades, and I think I'm being generous on the latter. His blatent screw-ups in offering stupid money, and even more stupid term to most UFA's this has bitten us squarely in the ass in the last off season. The fact he picked Virtanen twice; once in 2014 over Ehlers and Nylander, and again in Oct 2020 over Toffoli should be a firing squad, minimum. With Hextall and Burke snapped up by the Pens, our ownership has dropped the ball, yet again. What a mess……..

  8. I mean the biggest issue comes from the Erickson trade. But to play devils advocate here most fans were stoked about it considering how he played with the twins for Sweden. There was a push to get the twins a cup and Louis was part of that. Obviously it didn't pan out but again at the time most of us were stoked about it. My only critique outside of that is Virtanen / Toffoli situation. Probably should have let go of Virtanen to keep Toffoli, but cap space. And at the end of the day Benning is responsible for the cap situation. But for the love of god they better not touch their draft and player development team. We have been pumping out great young players at a rate that I don't even think the Canucks expected. Which again, is adding to the cap frustrations.

  9. He has grown into a great GM. And you will never hear how many bad moves were made from ownerships involvement. Too many cry baby fans. Teams have ups and downs in growing years.

  10. Hughes and Pettersson are getting bridge deals. They aren't getting huge contracts. I expect all three of Hughes, Pettersson, and Demko to take up $14-16 million of that $22 million dollars. It won't be as bad as people make it out to be.

  11. Schmidt just never should’ve left Vegas. He was perfect there as a Golden Knight. Hopefully he returns to Vegas.

  12. Well see what Benning can do after Eriksson's gone. That's what I've been waiting for for 5 years. But now we have stupid Meyers ruining our cap. Also we need a gm who is respected by other GM's. I don't know if he is. It's harder to make moves if other GM's prefer dealing with others more than Benning.

  13. Ouuff Luongo for 2 more years too. That's wild. I guess we gotta do what we do best as nucks fans………… Wait.

  14. I think Benning's time is up and same for Green. Just the Canucks were never a sounded defensive team playing with a tight structure. You wont win Stanley Cup for winning every game at 6-5 or 5-3. The Stanley Cup winners played with good defense and well balanced line up, which Canucks have neither.

  15. I previously thought letting Markstrom go alone was grounds for a firing but the NMC Seattle issue with Demko makes sense. Lose lose situation. If you’re Borvat et al though you have to wonder why Markstrom, Tanev, Toffoli are all gone now because they are all solid pieces the team could have probably built around? This is a tough one. Maybe the Canadian market pressure is unfair.

  16. Meh as well at the moment would like to actually see a proper rebuild though….this building on the fly thing hasn't really worked

  17. Fire, please. It's the letting high value players walk without getting any assets back.
With a bit of foresight we could have gotten something for Markstrom etc.

  18. honestly I don't get the look back on the mike giles years with love that some canucks fans have been doing the rose tinted glasses they must be wearing need to be shattered so they get a reality check .

  19. Jim has done a good job drafting, but you have do more than that to be a GM that builds a contender. He’s committed too much money to the bottom six. Wasted the ELC years of Pettersson & Hughes. Where the Canucks are today has everything to do with lack of vision and execution. It falls on him.

  20. In my humble opinion, Jim Benning could’ve had a better off-season, but it is not his fault that his entirely DECENT (not good) hockey club decided to mail it in after like five games. I put Vancouver in the same boat as the Penguins. Egregious underperformers

  21. Intelligent hockey guy in a lot of ways. Terrible Manager in the truest sense of the word. Ownership in Vancouver loves "yes " men. Thats all they will ever hire. Really handicaps their club

  22. He'll no for Gillis, Lol. Dumb-azz move. Aquallini's at fault the most, should have stuck with Linden.

  23. I'm in my late 40s now, born and bred in Vancouver, and a Canucks fan forever. Don't panic, people! The Canucks are a young team, they were only set to improve organically, and in a pandemic year are stuck in a division of teams that are mostly ahead of them in their rebuilding/building stages. This is a weird year, and isn't indicative of where the team is heading. Let's not throw Benning to the wolves over this.

  24. well I think he did a superb job drafting
and some of his terrible contracts didn’t look so bad at the time, and they wouldn’t have been as bad if 2-3 players didn’t all dramatically shit the bed

TBH no one though Loui and Sutter and Ferland and Beagle would all be so bad — a lot of other GMs wanted those guys too (which is why their market value at the time was high).

We paid market value at the time =/ if we hadn’t signed them, someone else would have for only a tiny it l less.

still that’s on Benning for sure but I mean it’s bad luck all 4 guys become terrible (or unavailable).

  25. I love your content, but I slightly disagree with how you gave Benning the benefit of doubt for drafting some of our best prospects. In reality the picks before the 2019 draft, was Judd Bracket and Trevor linden. The fact that you are giving Benning semi praise for being around while Bracket and Linden made those decisions is a misrepresentation. Especially after Benning forced out Linden by going directly to Aquilini. On top of that, linden leaving forced Judd Bracket out as well. You really should of separated any moves made while Linden and Bracket were with the team . If you take out those previous years and only factor in the two years Benning was solely in charge. This board and list would look a lot different. It would not reflect well on Benning. Please let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

  26. He's not a gm he's a good scout and player development guy but as far as a general manager goes he sucks. Contracts and trades he has no idea what he is doing.

  27. Loui Eriksson's horrendous contract, letting Tanev, Edler, and Markstrom walk, trading Jared McCann, Gustav Forsling, Alex Burrows and Jannik Hansen for 4 bags of pucks, drafting Jake Virtanen and Olli Juolevi at top 10 overall, giving Bo Horvat the C over a 2011 veteran in 2019, and failing to trade for/sign (in FA) a veteran star forward (eg. Joe Pavelski/Matt Duchene) after the Sedins retired. Any one of these reasons is already enough to get this jerk of a GM fired
