Player Safety Under Fire ft. Aaron Portzline & Greg Wyshynski | The Sheet with Jeff Marek

Jeff Marek is joined by Greg Wyshynski and Aaron Portzline on today’s episode of The Sheet to break down a busy weekend around the NHL. Marek and Wyshynski open the show with a deep dive into the fallout from the suspension handed to Radko Gudas, examining how the league’s discipline process continues to spark debate across the hockey world. The conversation also touches on recent comments from Connor McDavid about the NHL’s Department of Player Safety and the broader conversation surrounding consistency, accountability, and how player discipline is handled in today’s game. Later in the show, Portzline joins to discuss the challenges facing the Columbus Blue Jackets, including ongoing frustrations with officiating, the team’s season-long struggles, and what it all means for the organization moving forward. It’s a wide-ranging conversation covering league discipline, star player reactions, officiating controversies, and the latest storylines shaping the NHL right now.

  1. Well, the suspensions have to be a lot more, not be different because of the playoffs. Mixed with the Playoff Salary Cap, you should have plenty of bodies to throw into the fire. If you can have 2 or more football teams in Manchester, and god knows how many in London, you can have two hockey teams in the GTA.

  2. 15:45 Jeff hit the nail on the head. McDavid should be yelling at the Players Association. They went to bat for Gudas and was angling for 2 games. McDavid should be asked why isn’t he outraged at his own PA?

  3. Jeffie, good discussion. It’s complicated. I love Matthew’s energy. He is easy to like. Gudas has a mean streak. Quinnville loves that. But Quinnville never really appreciated Brian Bickell ( sacrificing his body) made. Q would nickname him Pickle. For Q ( a center-less-ness) it is about the Benjamin’s. Bringing more light (consciousness) to this specific situation is how we grow. But it is never without sacrifice. Sacrificing one’s ego, letting go of a dollar, sacrificing looks ( not being hip, slick and cool or tough guy)….. slightly different context but along the same lines, “I think I said somewhere that the real revolution in our society begins with the person who can stand with his own depression. Because then you say no to the whole manic situation of modern society: overconsumption, overactivity, travel “ James Hillman

  4. Interesting. I live in Australia and played AFL. At 19 I was picked by the Sandringham Zebras in the AFL reserve grade which now allows the chance when proven to be called up to first grade which for me was the StKilda Saints (Melbourne based team). My second game, I have the ball, had passed it to a team mate but have a similar knee to knee collision from a reckless opposition player late in the attempted tackle or spoil. Carried off the ground taken to hospital scans showed an 8cm ACL tear classified as a Grade 3 or complete rupture with surgery recovery approx 12 months then (1991) 6 to 8 months today. However I had also a torn patellar tendon which had approx 2mm of the tendon left holding my knee cap in place. Surgery, recovery, physiotherapy etc Despite all my efforts of returning to that level again the injury was far too great and ended my career and dream to play first grade footy. The idiot whom I collided with recovered in a couple of weeks with some swelling in the knee and went on to be a regular AFL player living as an Aussie sporting celeb on easy street. Hardly fair.
