When working AHL games as video review off-ice official, I prefer very very low scoring games with very few fights or big hits. (Less work is good!) As a fan watching NHL games, I prefer big legal hits and great passing that often leads to great goals / saves. After working over 600 hockey games, I can easily get bored watching certain old-school defense-first systems .. so I get the desire for fans to see "high event" games.
Dahlin deserves to punched many times. I appreciate Hagel for doing it. Thanks .
Signed – every hockey fan outside of Buffalo.
Like a Swiss Time Piece you never miss a Beat! Thank you!👏👏👏
They played an injured player in the Olympics vs Scheifele? You'd think they'd have learned from 4 nations.
Thanks Hockey Guy.
I really like the defensive masterclasses between two top teams, a great example being Dallas vs Colorado. Both teams jumping on tiny mistakes, fighting for opportunities to cycle, and two elite tendies just putting on a clinic. Its games where I'm holding my breath when the third period is only starting that get me going.
think my idea game would be the following:
max of 2 fights
plenty of offense so long as the defense doesnt feel offense (dont need a 0-0 game thru regulation like you can get often in soccer)
some insane saves in net
My favorite type of game to watch is a Red Wings W. 😅
That was one of the best game I had ever seen….
I Don't wanna see guys get hurt though
Hi Shannon… thanks for the news of today!
For me, I'd have to say that my favourite games would depend on who was playing… last week's contest between my Jets and the Lightning (the Helle vs Vasey show) was by far my favourite recent game. When it's two skilled goalies like that, I find it thrilling to watch.
But… when it's the backup goalies in and the score is ringing up like what Buffalo and Tampa did yesterday, that's fun too. I grew up watching those 80s games where every game was 6-3 or higher scores. Clearly back then strong defensive work was optional (LOL) but it was still alot of fun to watch those high scoring games back then and it still is now.
Totally rooting for Buffalo because they deserve a good playoff run, plus they've got some former Jets over there and so they're another one of the teams I will be rooting for, except when they play the Jets of course. 🙂
Props to Mark Scheifele for being 1st star of the week too!! It's been a fun week and I'm sure hoping the Jets can keep climbing the ranks with no more injuries.
I've been into hockey for about a year and a half now, and I prefer the defensive games, personally. It makes a goal way more exciting when it's a big one
No on more fighting and goals. Goon up the game again? Stupid idea.
I wonder if a 6 inch to Hagel ribs would also be only fined ? You know with all the ridiculous fine and was supposed to be suspension…
Hagel need to face a real heavy weight, you know, Olivier ? Xhekaj ? Jeannot ? Deslauriers? but he would likely turtle 😂
and if you ask,no,i'm not sorry.
Shannon, I cannot begin to explain how baffling it is that blues fans are acting about this win streak. They're acting like the 1st overall pick was a shoo-in, and this in streak is self sabatoge. Lamenting wins will never be baffling to me.
I just turned 37 at midnight. My fav games r 1s like minne vs colorado on sunday. 3-2 2-1 games with some speed some defense great saves goalie duelish. Fights make it a little bit better when theres 1 or 2 of em. And quinn hughes looked tired again if hes not tired lookin that game is probably even better
Fights and unhinged offenses provide a spark of attention, but they don't attract people interested in hockey itself.
If it isn't the team I support that's playing, a game like Sabres-Lightning is great to watch. If it IS my team that's involved, I just want them to play tight, well-organised and simple hockey, none of that sloppy and hot-headed stuff
im a devils fan that grew up in the counter attack trap system. i enjoyed it. If i didnt get to see success maybe i would prefer the 80s goals and brawls type style. but i tried watching some of the games on youtube and it doesnt seem fun to celebrate as much cause its all that is happening goals fights, illegal checks, brawls… i felt myself skipping through it a lot because it all seemed to matter less. it probably doesnt help that the playoffs were the isles then the oilers winning 9 of 11 cups.
I think one thing about the Buffalo-Tampa game that really made it fun was the huge momentum swings. Buffalo jumped out to a lead, then Tampa went on a heater, then there was some back and forth before Buffalo scored the last few goals. You don't need 15 goals to get that kind of pattern, but it does make it easier. On the other hand, with 15 goals it's more likely that one team runs away with it. High-scoring and that close is a rare combination. Likewise, fights aren't the only way to show the intensity of the game but they are very effective at it. I think the key is the momentum swings and the intensity. The goals and the fights are one way to demonstrate that, but they aren't necessary.
As for my favorite type of game, my introduction to hockey was the Sabres of the late 90s so I love a game with exciting goaltending. For me that standard was set by Hasek so it's hard to ever match, but it's great when it happens.
my favorite type of hockey is when both teams have fun (unless it's vegas)
My favorite gane would be a 2-1 game. Excellent defense and goaltending. The kind of game coaches like so to speak.
When you talk about growing the game of hockey you can't be thinking about appealing to the die hard hockey fans and the purists who have a life long passion, that stuff comes in time, the average person wants to see the exciting stuff that they'll tell their friends about, that's the fighting, the big hits and the kind of players who can twist defenders in knots with their movement with the puck. Newbies in any sport wanna see the intensity that the game can bring cos that's where the entertainment value is, especially if you don't understand the nuances of the rules and haven't had a chance to grasp the storylines of the league and the characters that catch the eye yet
Blues win streak……. you have my attention! LGB!
If I'm watching my team, the most exciting thing that keeps me engaged is a lead change. The best games have multiple, so I like it when there's high scoring and the teams are evenly matched so it swings back and forth between one team looking like they're gonna win to the other team looking like they're gonna win
I think if there were 4 fights every single game people would get sick of it quickly. I do think it would be good for growing the game if that fight number went up a bit though. Maybe .75 – 1 fight a game. That way the really crazy ones feel special and so do the really close ones where they dont want to risk the penalty
Johansson didn't have an off night. Johansson looked just like you expect Johansson to look. He's terrible.
Make the blues stop Shan… please dear god. Why the shit are we winning NOW?!? arrrg.
My thought on Hagel is that he was instigating and aggressor all game. If there was an altercation, he had a part in it. He should have gotten a game misconduct.
Tamp showing its true colors as always. Once a dirty ass team always a dirty ass team
Did Todd Bertuzzi get fined for what he did to Steve Moore? C'mon NHL! Dude was lucky he wasn't kicked out, you could have showed some balls. It's fine, Stanley will cave his face in on April 6th
Hi Hockey Guy. Love your channel and of course your content. Three stars – I would give lots of consideration to Rasmus Dahlin this week. Defenseman who defends at a high level and who also scores – 1 goal, six assists last four games, and a spirited (though losing) fight against Tampa. But more importantly he LEADS this team by his play. I love Tage Thompson, but to me the best Sabres player and the best this week was Dahlin.
Thank you.
