The San Diego Gulls fell 3-2 to the Rockford IceHogs Friday night at Pechanga Arena San Diego despite outshooting Rockford 30-17. Sasha Pastujov opened the scoring late in the first period, finishing a quick passing play with Matthew Phillips and Cal Burke at 13:10 to give San Diego a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission. The Gulls controlled much of the opening frame, holding a 10-5 advantage in shots.
Rockford responded with three goals in the second period to take control of the game. Nick Lardis tied the contest 1:42 into the frame before Dominic Toninato gave the IceHogs their first lead at 5:30. Gavin Hayes then scored shorthanded at 13:55, a goal that stood as the game-winner. San Diego answered just over a minute later when Sam Colangelo buried a power-play goal from Tristan Luneau and Pastujov at 15:03 to cut the deficit to one, but the Gulls were unable to find the equalizer in the third period despite several late chances. Tomas Suchanek made 14 saves in net for San Diego, while Olivier Rodrigue stopped 28 shots for Rockford.
