Anyone old enough to remember Harold Ballard and Larry Hillman knows they put a curse on the Maple Leafs years ago. They will never win again. The curse needs to be broken.
In order to start with culture, you gut the room first while keeping the people with the mentalities you want in your future team. Then you build a team around that culture. Itās ok to have superstars but you want ones that are skilled, confident and highly physical. They canāt shy away from the physical parts of the game, they have to love it. For the next five years, the mentality of the players is the most important thing to focus on.
Doesn't matter what picks the Leafs get, the need to play better together and need to play with HEART and DRIVE. They've given up and just can't consistently play well.

Wayne Simmonds, Nazem Kadri and other hard hitters, was total management by Dubas, he wanted a light team, still cannot figure out why a tough, skilled individual like, Brendan Shanahan would allow that to happen. The league wanted light and that's where the Leafs are.

Austin Matthews had a career altering injury year and a half ago and it was reaggravated and he has never been the same sense and is a mere shadow of himself maybe 60% itās a good thing to belief sign to a short term contract

Does Kyper forget that almost 20 years ago, the Leafs had some late pushes when it was too late qualify for the playoffs that raised them in the standings? It didn't help them.

Kyper making Sam eat his shorts calling him out with Matthew's being better than McDavid and now admitting he's wrong and then still trying to double down goes to show you that he "Sam" has no clue what he's talking about and you can throw his buddy Bunkus in there with him. Kyper is right, you'll never win anything if you don't have a winning culture. The Leaf's thought they could buy a cup by paying 5 players over $50 million. It don't work that way. IMO they have to tear it down and build a team the old fashion way, draft and Smart trades. This includes team president and GM.
