Everyone is waaay overvaluing a pick in the 30s… with that being said I think its fair to criticize all this money the team has taken on for 3rd line talent and question if thats the right strategy moving forward…probably would have been better off doing nothing and going after a player in free agency.
Schenn was on my radar as a potential pickup since he does have 2yrs remaining on his contract. However I don’t think he was worth what the Isles gave up for him. But Iwas very happy about the Pageau resigning.
We needed scoring help and so that being said we resigned Pageau and traded for Schenn. We gave up a wasted signing in Drouin along with a 1st round pick and an additional draft pick along with a low level goalie prospect. We all wanted a sniper or a pure goal scorer but we were not going to trade Eklund, Aitchenson, or Eiserman to get Robert Thomas or Jordan Kyrou so I'm glad we didn't give up our future for those two guys. I would look at the draft for when we could aquire scoring help or sign somebody else but the only thing I need to happen is to let Anders Lee walk because his usefulness is done and I was shocked we didn't find a place for Shabanov and Duclair to be sent to even for more draft capital. Another benefit is that Cal Richie can go down to the AHL and work on his game because down the middle we now have Horvat, Schenn, Pageau and Czikas with extra centers being Barzal and Richie.
Time will tell on the trade. 1st rd. Colorado (if Avalanche go past 1st rd. then the pick is 28th at best) Beauvillier was 28th in McDavid draft – best draft in a while Kadri going to Colorado pretty much assures the Col. 1st rd. pick will be 28th at the very best. 3rd rd. pick from NJ (bit of a stretch for 3rd rd. – more miss than hit in the third round) Gidlöf – sorry to see go, but we have Gamzin, so no worries there. Drouin – no loss there – cuts the cap cost.
I don't mind Horvat – Schenn – Pageau down the middle – nothing flashy, but sold, dependable and can play tough minutes. Will Ritchie go on the wing then? Perhaps. Put him with Schenn and Heineman. (maybe Schenn plays the wing – depending on the zone and situation) Keep Palat with Horvat and Barzal for now. Keep Pageau with Lee and Holmstrom.
Pageau extends for 3 years – I'm okay with that. Lee? hmmm…not sure about Lee.
Glad we didn't have to move out any of the forward prospects or Aitcheson.
Schenn will help for the playoffs and make the team tougher to play come playoff time.
Horrible trade. I wouldn’t be so annoyed if we didn’t go and resign JGP right after. We traded for a very similar player, and then resigned JGP to a 3 year deal, with a NTC attached to it. I just understand how we expect to get younger if we keep filling the roster with old washed up players? We shed no cap and got rid of picks and a goalie prospect for what? I really don’t understand the plan anymore and really don’t like what Darche has done this deadline
I don’t hate it not exactly what I wanted but I think we should give it a few games to actually get a better taste. But the fact that we got rid of. Drouin is enough for me the way I see it. You’re essentially paying a first round to get rid of a god-awful player.
This has got to be one of the worst trades in the history of this franchise. Brings back the nightmares of Mike Milbury’s trades and some of Lamoriello’s boners. Who the HELL is Brayden Schenn and why was he a MUST acquisition for Matthew Darche? This guy is the missing link to a championship? You gotta be joking. This team is starving for a young goal scorer and he deals a big chunk of our expendable assets for a 34 year old center who is on the wane and only has 12 goals? And don’t tell me that the first round pick isn’t worth anything. Do you know how many superstar snipers were drafted from the second round on. Why this “win now or bust” mentality? Here I thought Darche was sharp but by the looks of this trade we got ourselves just another impulsive, clueless GM who has a lot to learn.
Schenn is a big man. He’s a proven player throughout his career. He also hits and will pull our players into the fight. It looks like we gave up a lot but it’s really not. We are so soft and Schenn is needed.
Just think. A captain from St. Louis wanted to come here. No one comes here. How incredible and interesting this is. Schenn can be setting up something bigger durning the summer. He’s a grinder and 56% in the dot. He makes us better than we were.

Horrible trade
BRUTALANDERS
No extension for Lee. He will walk for nothing. Terrible GM.

Watching the SDPN review of the trade after this, it seems they favor it more than you do. Lots of great points made. This was an overreaction.

I’m happy Drouin is gone so I don’t have to hear you say his name that way.

35 years old for a 1st round pick just terrible

You both are acting like goofy islander fans. No one wants to trade Eklund, Cash, or Cole. They are all coming up as our contracts come off.

Finally, the Islanders picked up somebody who’s tough, who has grit who hits. Did y’all see our last 2 games? We got beat up. It’s not a bad deal.
We are better than last night. We are tougher and we gained grit. We gained a better player who can protect Schaefer and Richie.
We are lucky someone from the other side of the country wanted to play for the islanders. This is a big deal.
I’m making that bet on Tuesday all day. $500
If offense is a weak point, why has drouin played over duclair? Why does mclean play over duclair?
Every trade was nuts . The prices were through the roof . Faulk even got a 1st and 3rd return.
