‘Connor Hellebuyck was simply brilliant’: Button on USA claiming gold over Canada

Jack Hughes scored the golden goal as the United States defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime to claim Olympic gold in Milano Cortina 2026 on Sunday. What happened on the winning overtime goal? Does Connor Hellebuyck’s gold medal game put to rest the narrative he ‘can’t win the big one’? Did Canada come undone because their best players couldn’t capitalize on chances? TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button joins SC with Jay Onrait to discuss.

  1. "Tretiak 2.0". Brilliant. The Soviet coach should have been gulag bound for pulling him at the end of the first period in Lake Placid. Arrogance personified. Soft goal, so what? The USSR had scored 10 goals on us in an exhibition game in NYC the week before. I was fortunate enough to have been at the Lake Placid game. Section 5, Row A, Seat 14. I still have the ticket stub of course.

  2. Putting all this aside, I have yet to hear a convincing argument as to why Olympics title games switch to 3 on 3 at the end of the 3rd period. Anyone here want to take a shot at it? What — they get tired?

  3. millions of baby wipes and diapers for Canada on the way…your moaning is sickening.. The world has passed you by in hockey….the Finns are even an better team.

  4. I mean the USA players should really just give their gold medals to the Canadians, because I mean cmon, they’re just so much better than the Americans.

  5. Button doesn't get it(it might explain why he doesn't have a management position with an NHL team anymore!)! Team USA played together better as a team than Team Canada. Will can beat Skill in hockey! Team Canada had the more skill and experience with their roster, but Team USA bonded together and had the Will to beat Team Canada!

  6. Hey boys you can't win them all thru hockey fan it sucks big time I am 64 on Thursday but I am super proud of you guys ❤❤❤ I know you don't feel like it Canada is proud of you guys 😊😊😊

  7. Connor Helaybucke. Played for UMass Lowell. The Winnipeg Jets offered him $900,000 to leave school. The rest is history.

  8. I so wish there was a 4 nations face off next year (sadly no) for the teams of USA and Canada to let some steam off

  9. Canadians losing the plot over this game. “9 out 10 we win” well it was one game and lost it 1 out of 1 times. Pumped you guys you are happy about losing the biggest hockey game in the world. Fookin clowns. Long live the ghost of gaudreau !! USA USA USA! 🦅

  10. These guys are delusional. As we say in the free, gun loving, Lord worshiping states in the USA South, “Bless their hearts 🤣!”

  11. Sometimes #2 will top #1. That’s all this is. Canadian hockey is not in crisis ffs. This is sports; losing happens sometimes. Nobody’s entitled. Puck takes weird bounces, etc.

I’m American, so glad Team USA won, but all the non-hockey political stuff makes this seem more epochal than it is. Great win, happy, but hockey in Canada isn’t disappearing!

If Canadian hockey were a stock I’d buy, buy, buy. Now, back to the playoff push & rooting for Tom Wilson on my hometown team.

Duane Thomas, long-ago RB for Dallas, was asked before a Super Bowl how it felt to play in the ultimate game. He said, “If it’s the ultimate game, how come they’re playing it again next year?”

Appreciate your balanced perspective. Best analysis I’ve heard. Great stuff.

  12. All that matters is what happens during the games that are actually played. Fictitious games don't mean anything and are the refuge of bad losers.

  13. I’m actually shocked how our ‘polite’ neighbors are such sore losers and kind being nasty biatches. From the players to their media to their fans, all they do is whine and give zero credit to the American team. Who cares if Canada would win 9 out of 10 games, it was 1 out of 1. The better team are the ones with the gold medals.

  14. Canada is a bunch of sore losers it seems. Grasping at straws and validating your job. The better TEAM won. The team that loved their country won. Not a single Canadian player said they were proud to be Canadian. That was the difference maker. Canada played like it was the all star game, America played like it matter for their country.

  15. This whole discussion is ridiculous. Canadian pundits are arrogant idiots. You had a 5 on 3 and couldn't score. And the Canadians sucked at 3 on 3, Americans out hustled you. Couldn't believe that Makar and McDavid were so slow to defend. And Mackinnon letting himself be bodied out of the way. Lol, those stars failed badly in OT. Plus being such sore losers during the medal ceremony, so unprofessional. Well deserved win by the USA.

  16. Hellebuyck wins gold but can't get a snif of the NHL finals.Another Loungo story.Great regular season stats, an Olympic gold medal are both nice but they both would trade them for the Stanley Cup Champion title in a minute I bet.

  17. Hell of an Olympics by Hellebuyck!!
    A W E S O M E performance!!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS to our great USA hockey team!!!!!
    🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🥇🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
    🇺🇸🏒🇺🇸🏒🇺🇸🏒🇺🇸

  18. Hellebuyck’s performance follows a pattern. The US’s Olympic medals come as a result of sensational goaltending. Such was the case in 1960 (Jack McCartin) and 1980 (who can forget Jim Craig?)

  19. If we play Canada 10 times and win only 1 out of the 10, I'll take that. It'll be sweet and see Canadians and it's nation goes nuts for at least 4 years 😂😅. Until 2030…… go 🇺🇸

  20. The cope here is hilarious! He spent 90% of his time talking about anything but the USA team (except to disparage them) 😂
