Logan Sawyer may be the most underrated prospect in the Montreal Canadiens pipeline—and his breakout season is turning heads. After being drafted in the third round (78th overall) in 2024, Sawyer has taken a major leap at Providence College, already surpassing his freshman totals with 23 points in just 27 games while showing improved strength, confidence, and offensive instincts.

Now standing nearly 6’3” and close to 200 pounds, Sawyer’s physical growth and competitive mentality—what he calls having “a lot of ‘F you’ in my game”—are helping him emerge as a legitimate future NHL option for Montreal. His development, hockey IQ, and increasing production suggest he could climb quickly in the Canadiens prospect rankings and become an important piece of the team’s long-term rebuild.

In this video, Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico break down Logan Sawyer’s rapid development, what makes him such a dangerous under-the-radar prospect, and when he could realistically push for an NHL role with the Montreal Canadiens.

  1. Habs have a bunch of interesting prospects and what I like is the diversity in their prospect pool. A lot of guys with great upside but who project to fill different roles.

In some cases they have 3 or more who project to something similar, but most of the player types they have at least 1 guy with decent upside.

Sawyer is another one of them. Unfortunately they can't all make it but I have faith in our scouting staff. I believe many of them will make it.

  2. Everybody's been calling him underrated for a couple months now… I think he's just a good prospect now

  3. You are the only one that brings of Rohrer anymore. In fact a few online have said he’s super far outside and looming in. What makes you still bring him up and think positive? Thanks.

  4. There's definately a bunch of sleeper picks that are very intriguing. Sawyer seems to have really improved his game. But there's also guys like Konyushkov, Cournoyers and Miller are having an impressive season. Mooney has exploded recently. And then Pickford. All third round and later picks

  5. Possibly the most overrated is Zharovsky. Skating and work ethic issues. Seen two videos of his shifts in a game and he had no separation speed. I seen no back checking and while his teammates were battling for the puck deep in the defensive zone he was waiting for the puck at the blue line. These are not NHL translatable qualities. I know he is only 19 but he needs significant improvement in these areas before he has a sniff of a chance at the NHL.

  6. It's time to bring Reinbacher and Engstrom to the big club….for the last 25 games….the bottom 3 can go.

  7. Asset value going up so that's good but, like all prospects, let's see when they play here and Laval.

  8. I remember the term "compete" from HUGO and that reminds me of the team in the 90s that won the cup. All young, talented and hungry.

  9. On the topic of Sawyer the same question has to ALWAYS be asked WHERE does he fit in small players should not be 3rd or 4th line players you need defensive responsible players tough guys that win battles.
My point is that when we talk about a smallish offensive player does he ever fit into the top 6 role knowing that Hage is coming and imo he WILL be a top 6 player he has to be.
The type of player I want on my bottom 6 is like Laval's Belzile a solid very responsible player and even as he ages he is one of Laval's top scorers but also a PLUS 18.You know why guys like belzile never get noticed >>no flash n dash they don't play like Hutson they don't score PROLIFIC goals they just play smart tough hockey.

  10. How the moron Dolan who "owns" the Rangers let Hughes and Gorton escape to Montreal is a story that will be told. These guys and their teams of scouts and psychologists are in a different league from the people who run other teams.

  11. I wonder how exactly, do they measure “processing skills”. I have will always measure a kid by his speed and skill. Speed never goes in a slump and skill can’t be taught. Then I look heart, passion, courage and size. Size is fabulous but if it can’t keep up…it’s useless. Processing skills really belong to the most talented…they can creat time/space. There are a number of very good hockey players that I would not call processors. They know what they are capable of and never venture beyond. I’ll take Speed, Skill, Courage first…every time.

  12. Sawyer is just a few months older than Roger McQueen, his Providence teammate who was drafted in the top 10 last summer. They have the same point totals with the Friars.
