  1. Gripping stuff, Mark.

I know it's a few years since you posted all these clips of Mike's races, but I'm pleased to have stumbled across them 🙂

  2. theres never been a runner like that ever-ovett stalking rono(who was world class) at a jog and then bang and it was all so effortless

  3. Ovett was a great runner, but I hated the way he ridiculed his opponents by his wave and showed no respect to Henry Rono who went on to an amazing year with 4 world records. But at the end and i am glad Irishman john Tracey handed him his ass when he tried that crap on him (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDCYrlN3UeQ). But Ovett was a great runner, he had one olympic gold medal, lost in the 83 world championships, lost in the 84 Olympics, yes he had world records but he was never better than Coe and by 82 he wasn't better than Cram, in 82 he was no where near Dave Moorcroft (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQYaDnsLeAQ&t=329s) and his opponents from 83 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTuGCLDUgUY) on could have easily ridiculed him but they had more class than that.

  4. The start of that 5000 metres was like the start to the Grand National. At least thirty runners.

What a strange tactician Henry Rono was. How many times did he give up the inside lane then come running on the outside to regain the lead?
Did he always run like this?

  5. When 13 minutes for the 5K seemed unobtainable….Rono was king….but Ovett could win almost any distance he chose on the right day. This was the right day.

  6. Steve Ovett is my all time favourite athlete and it was a joy to watch him In that race over Rono at Crystal Palace all those years ago.

  7. Crystal palace ,at the moment , they are finally fixing the surrounding area around the stadium, the 4 floodlights have gone there are fixing the terrace, there is in the park new restaurant near the lake and new toilets facilities, along with the new renovation of the new high level crystal palace Victorian station.at crystal palace parade.

  8. No other British middle distance runner has ever been able to excite the crowd like Steve Ovett at his peak…….nobody.

  9. Just three weeks before Ovett had run what turned out to be the 3rd fastest 800m in the world at the European Champs in Prague in winning silver. Extraordinary range.

  10. Dave Fitzsimons, tragically taken early with cancer. I believe there is a bridge named in his honour in South Australia where he was employed in the Works department.

  11. As an Englishman maybe I' m biased but Steve Ovett was the greatest mid distance runner of all time. Best out of our fantastic world and Olympic champions incl Coe, Cram, Elliot.

  12. This was a really good 5000 race. Compared to the insipid 5000 in the recent UK Champioships at Birmingham it was bloody brilliant! Interesting that lots of the UK's top runners were willing to compete on a regular basis – against each other and the best that the rest of world athletics could throw at them.Better days!

  13. What a time for men's mid to long distance running. So many prominent runners and championship holders, Olympic medalist wandvworld record holders from britain, Ireland, Kenya and the U.S.A.
