GAME NIGHT: How Panthers’ SHOCKING Offseason WILL Lead To 3rd Straight Stanley Cup, DYNASTY Loading?

The off seasonason is well underway and we here at Locked on NHL game night are tackling the toughest questions with our favorite local experts. Yes, we are. And tonight we head south to Sunrise, Florida, shining light on the defending Stanley Cup champs. Are the Panthers building a dynasty in this modern era of the NHL? We’ll answer that question and so much more as we welcome Cats expert, our good friend Armando Vez on this summer edition of Locked On NHL Game Night. When that final horn sounds, you know it’s time for Locked On NHL Game Night. All the postgame reactions to every game across the league every single night with insights only the hosts at Locked On can provide. Prepare to experience game day reactions like never before, only on Locked On NHL Game Night. Your team every day. Hello there, hockey fans, and welcome to another episode of Locked On NHL Game Night. I’m Cam Stewart, a sad Boston Bruins fan who is still somewhat happy for Brad Marshant. And I’m Tyler Feldman, a lifelong Penguins fan, born and raised in Pittsburgh, but currently loving life in Austin, Texas. Cam, I see we have a different setup here. I had to go special for Armono. And by special, I mean the Wi-Fi is totally out in my new apartment. So, I am at a local public library in the greater Boston area. We have some rabid fans, so I’m not going to disclose the exact uh location if that’s okay. Um, but this is this is a big event. I had to make sure I was locked down for this because we do have Armando Valz of locked-on Panthers, our resident champ. I mean, we we got to call him a champ for this locked on champ. And we’ve been waiting for the champ to get here this summer. He’s been busy. He’s been tough to get a hold of because I think he’s been going with the Stanley Cup to each location. That’s what I think. That’s what I think. Yeah. So, when it comes to the hosts of the Lock Podcast Network, I’m gonna I’m gonna do a famous quote from a baseball player of a rival team of Cam’s favorite of Luke Garrick. I am the luckiest man on the locked on podcast network when it comes to just the amount of the the run that the Panthers have on. Uh presence trophy, three straight Stanley Cup appearances and two championships. So yeah, I I’m a little spoiled here and the Marlins are redot. Yeah, South Florida’s the place to be. Yeah, 55 and 55. And honestly, I feel like it’s the Panthers effect. The it it all started after the Panthers won the Stanley Cup and uh seven straight series wins actually. And the Pan um the Marlins, excuse me, are the only team with a 500 record over the Yankees in in their history. Love that. We we we started with bad baseball, although Luger can’t be bad on that. Uh but and turned it into that. I I love that. You know, I we had a coach at at my high school used to say something like that all the time, like always be wary of that school, even if they suck at basketball. If they just won big in football, it it just carries over. Like, and maybe that’s happening in South Florida right now. It’s it’s the Arbando Veles effect, I would say. Yeah. Uh it’s uh it’s it’s incredible what’s been happening just overall in in this region. And the Panthers are just uh they the brand is just building up so much more as as they continue to win. Armando, so tell me this. Take us to South Florida. What’s been the energy like? What what have the fans been feeling uh throughout this summer as this championship feeling continues and rides high uh in Sunrise. It’s a whole bunch of elation uh when it when it comes to it. And the fact is like after they won the first championship last year, they ran out of season tickets go going into the next very next season. The previous the one after the 2023 final, it was just the the lower bowl and then it went up all the way to the upper deck for that. And and really when it came to the actually clinching the first Stanley Cup, I mean the ownership paid off all their debts to the county that for for the arena, they started reinvesting back into the into the region. It started off first with the their new practice facility in downtown Fort Lauderdale. They’re in the process of right now constructing their new scoreboard for that’s going to be ready by opening night. I mean, it it’s partially done uh as as they held Monster Jam this past weekend. And I mean, just the overall brand of the Florida Panthers, I mean, two I I feel they had an an estimation of the second parade of almost double the amount of attendees from the first parade. So, I mean, the brand is just is just right there in in South Florida. And to think that opening night 2014 for the Panthers, just south of 8,000 fans were in that building for it. And now it’s sold out every single night, even on a Tuesday, against the the Ottawa Senators. So, Armando, do you have a story or two of unique experiences around town that you wouldn’t have even experienced maybe five years ago? Has anything happened or conversations you’ve had that you look back or reflect in real time and say, “Wow, this is crazy that hockey has become this popular and this dominant uh around Panthers country.” It took me about an hour and a half to just get out of Los Solas Boulevard after the parade. Even I though I stayed around the area after after the final speeches, walked around for a good hour and a half, but an additional hour and a half just to get in my car and just to get out of that area. And I’m just seeing Panther fans just walking over the bridge and I’m just thinking and I wasn’t even mad at all to to be quite honest. I’m just like, “Wow, this region has come a long way.” Well, Miami’s got such a diverse culture and it’s it’s so cool. Have you seen the growth of the sport within certain communities that historically speaking haven’t gravitated toward hockey? Well, it’s it’s funny because uh a lot of the parents that I’ve talked to, they now are very are inspired to put their children into the learn to play programs around the Florida Panthers. And the thing is with the Florida Panthers, they’re very into putting having their alumni be involved in in youth hockey. And one of them especially is Peter Warrell, who who is uh who runs runs the youth hockey in in South Florida at at the Iceplex. So, he’s uh been on quite a couple of podcasts talking about how much the the numbers have gone up as far as like registration. So, it’s great for the game and as we’re recording this on on this day, it was just announced that Matthew Kachchuck will be on the cover athlete for NHL 26. So putting a face to the name uh for for it and then with these numbers. Yeah. It it’s incredible how how many people are inspired when especially kids who look up to these guys and idolize uh them that they that they want to be part of this and they they might want to be another player to another player to make it to the NHL which right now the state of Florida has 20 players who have made NHL debuts. Right now it’s at 20. Wow. That that number is only going to go up and it’s probably going to go up pretty fast, mainly thanks to Matthew Kachchuck. Let’s talk about Matthew Kachchuck, shall we? Because this isn’t happening without Matthew Kachchuck and one of the great hockey trades of all time that I know you just reflected on uh back a few weeks ago on on your show. But I mean, most transcendent player probably in the sport right now in terms of how he’s built a dynasty. I mean, obviously not the only guy, but certainly that changed the whole face. And we’ll see it again when we’ve got uh Olympic hockey coming up in February just how big that Kachchuck star is going to be. But he might not be playing all that much before the February Winter Olympics. Armando, we’re hearing he could be out till about Christmas with that abductor injury he played through in the entire postseason. What does that do to this team? Well, uh, strangely it keeps the team together for now because the Panthers are over the cap. Uh, I right now they’re about just south of four million over for what what for as of right now. So, they have not had to trade an Evan Rodriguez or a Yesper Vocquist as of as of right now. So, right now, those guys are a good amount of insurance pieces for the Florida Panthers. So, right now it’s about Christmas time that the that Matthew Kachchuck will be missing in the in the lineup. And the the sad part is that’s around the time of the Winter Classic, the Panthers hosting that against the New York Rangers come uh January 2nd, uh 2026. So, it’s also a big celebration of the game, another perk of uh of the Florida Panthers winning uh their Stanley Cup. So, it’s going to be it’s going to be a little bit for him to be ready for the season. Elliot Friedman said that it’s going to be the start, but he did not give a specific timeline. That Christmas break timeline was given by Nick Ciprios uh there. So, right now that’s going to be um right now that’s going to look like that looks like that’s going to be the date. But this gives a lot of room for a a rising star like Mackie Seisvich to be part of that second line to be with Sam Bennett and Evan Rodriguez, a player who right now is on the cheap uh for for the Panthers who he was he was a scratch from the lineup uh after after the second round where the biggest decision that that Paul Maurice made in these playoffs going into game three against the Toronto Maple Leafs replacing that entire fourth line bringing Nok Gajivic and AJ Greer That was the entire turning point of the of the playoffs for the Panthers. Because it’s funny, each playoff run has their own turning point. For the 2024 run, it was game um game uh game four, excuse me, against the Rangers. This year, it was game three where Brad Marshan, your boy Cam, got the overtime winner. Here we go. That was brought up a couple times, right? How many times can we bring his name up tonight? Let’s see. We’re not done yet, Ty. That’s two. That’s two. Unless I can only count to three, so it better not be more than three, brother. We are not done yet because these Panthers did some serious business after winning back-to-back Stanley Cups. That’s frustrating the whole rest of the league. Let’s talk about how Bill Zito worked his magic and got that done. Coming up next on Locked on NHL Game Night. But first, a word from our sponsor, Monarch Money. We’ll take you through all 32 teams before the Panthers drop the puck with the Chicago Blackhawks and raise another Stanley Cup banner. And early October we’ll have it. Myself and Tyler Feldman, Eddie and Shukri will have it as well. Today we are talking with Armando Vez of Locked on Panthers. Armando, you don’t need me telling you this, but the Panthers do a lot of things right. I don’t know if you’ve caught on to that. They do a lot of things really well. Okay, they play better than you, they coach better than you, and their front office runs better than yours. Obviously, not Armandos, everybody else. And I read this very interesting Substack about a month ago, and they had talked about obviously, you know, the Panthers have a style. They stick to it. They’ve got great players, but what they do so well is they don’t spend money on bottom three to bottom five guys. You know, Marian’s on the third line. He’s going to make some money this year. Everything else, one, two years, under a million bucks. Nate Schmidt has goes off in the Stanley Cup playoffs making 800k a year. Uh they’re just so good at that. And that allows them to do what they did in this off season. You had Ecklad, Bennett, Marshan, the whole rest of the league’s thinking maybe they can keep two, probably one. No way they keep three. Bill Zo has all three of them suiting up for the Florida Panthers next year. How big is that? And how does he keep doing it? I’m s I’m even surprised still that they were able to keep all three. I was saying I was saying two that that was the that was the that was the conclusion that I was getting to at the start of the of the offseason. I was thinking, okay, I I even at the trade uh even at the time of the trade deadline where the Panthers got it at the buzzer for Brad Marshian, that’s three times now. I was thinking, okay, rental uh the conditions were okay, conditional 2028, if they make the conference final, it’s going to turn into a 2027 first. And but here is the thing. Where the Panthers got to today is all the work that they did before. When they signed Alexander Barkoff to the the 8-year um extension, 10 million a year still. Um the pan the NHL was going through a flat cap. The Panthers had not even won a playoff series in almost 26 years at the time. That previous season was a season of growth. And also Vinnie Viola, the owner, putting his money where his mouth is. He he is and also he’s one of the richest owners in in the league as well. He’s always has a horse in in the in the Kentucky Derby, the the Triple Crown races, mind you. So he puts the money right forward when it comes to the signing bonuses. So a lot of the guys’ base salaries are around $1 million as well. The only one of the core guys who are don’t have a base salary of 1 million is Seth Jones. because his contract was not signed with the Florida Panthers. So, it’s all that work done to so that and also it benefits the players. They get their pay right up front on July 1st. It’s also buyout proof as well. So, and the Panthers calculating this well right at the Kachchuck trade. It lines up with Alexander Barov. This kind of reminds me of the Chicago Blackhawks. TAZ and Kane’s contract expired at the same time as they were getting to the tail end of of that. and all and and you know and also when it comes to their Stanley Cup championships all the guys have produc all the main producers have been guys have produced before getting big pay um paydays you’re thinking Sam Reinhardt in the 2024 playoffs 57 goals and then the game winner in game seven against the Edmonton Oilers Sam Bennett the K smith winner he was making just north of of four million 4.4 four on a on a four-year term. He would um he scores 15 goals uh for for the Panthers in this run and then they get they’re the ones that get that are getting rewarded. Carter Hegy, he signed an extension right on opening night. He um and and and here’s the thing, the the calculated risk that that Bill Zito is able to make. The Tampa Bay Lightning didn’t qualify Vart um Carter Haggy. Panthers originally signed him to a two-year deal at 1 million right before. and also Gustaf Forsling off of waiverss. Every single team passed on him except the Florida Panthers. Got to give credit to Bill Zo and at the time who the coach was Joel Quenville for in which Joel Quenville was familiar with Gustaf Forsling’s game when he was with the Chicago Blackhawks. So there’s a lot of that familiar familiarity there. And then all the other guys that they’ve been familiar familiar with Kevin Stenland who was on the 2024 team uh um um Nate Schmidt who you mentioned was with Paul Maurice in Winnipeg. So it’s all also getting guys that they’ve been familiar with and bringing in them in with the Florida Panthers. So how they’ve been able to manage their books and also at coming at the right time of TV deal rising cap all the space that the Panthers are getting in the future are now to fill the edges. Everything was taken care of. um before space has opened up and and and you got also got to give a lot of credit to the players who who see the celebration. They they they’re treated like family. They’re treated well. They stay in the best hotels and it’s just like why would why would you want to leave? And yeah, there’s the tax conversation. I get that. I get I get that. But there it is. There it is. Brought it up. Brought it up. Took how long? 17 minutes. There it is. Hey, Armando. Armando. Armando, speaking of horses in nice hotels, you actually mentioned his name, Sam Bennett. He could have made 10 million AAV elsewhere, correct? He’s back on the squad making what what do you say? Four and a half. Is the fit just that good? Well, well, now he’s making eight, but previously he was making four. But yes, uh but yeah. Yeah, he could have made he could have made if a team was desperate enough to bring uh Sam Bennett into into their roster. Probably 10 million he someone would probably overpay for. But at the same time, I actually put a quote on my podcast um from Star Wars Laric. No, this one’s from Star Wars. Uh if so powerful you are, why leave? and the the style of play that the Panthers play and and the fit, it might not always it might not necessarily work out on in another situation. So, if you’re happy and and the and it fits to your game, why why leave? and also Aaron Eblad uh when it when it comes to how long he’s dealt with the with the losing for for the Panthers and now it’s manifested into winning sticking it out and also the situation with with his uh significant other his wife being a doctor in the area and all the friends that they’ve made over the years. I can understand why he wanted to stay because of the relationships that he’s built over the years. And Brad Marshian, I still don’t know how that happened, which to think that after the after the blow that Sam Bennett um put on Marshian in the second round in 2024, I mean, I got to give credit to the NHL. Thank you, NHL, for h having the Four Nations because Oh, I thought you I thought you were thanking them for something else. No, no, the Four Nations. the form nations and them um being in the same locker room together and actually conversing from practices to before games th those were those were kind it’s kind of like similar to the 2008 summer Olympics Chris Bosch LeBron James and Dwayne Wade they were they they talked about possibly um playing together I don’t know if that was necessarily the conversation at the Ford nation uh word by word uh but that could have that all things were forgiven there and look what happens just a month later, not even a month later. Four Nations was midFebruary. The trade deadline was early March. Just a few weeks later, they’re teammates. March 7th, a day that will live in infamy some places. Uh, and now you got Marian for six years all the way through age 43. Going to get the best, which I don’t believe he’ll finish. I don’t believe he’ll finish that contract, by the way. Doubt it. So, but we’ll see. Yeah. Yep. And it looks like after back-to-back Stanley Cups, the Panthers are, if not the favorite, the second favorite to win the Stanley Cup yet again. But Armando is going to fill us in on who could actually be a threat to this team. It’s coming up next on Locked on NHL Game Night. Locked on NHL game night. Alongside Tyler Felman, I’m Kim Stewart. joined by Armando Vez of the locked on back-to-back Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. He tried to get that to become the official name of the podcast. He tried. Lockdown’s pushed back a little bit on it. I say all the power to you, Armando. So, they bring back all three of the major free agents that they had. They just won the cup again and they’ve made it to the final the last three years. So, is there anybody at let’s start with the East. Is there anybody in this Eastern Conference that could stand in their way after what we’ve seen in free agency? It’s crazy because although they are a year older, I still think it’s a Tampa Bay Lightning. They’re in in their own state. I It’s just I for some reason I can’t write them off. For some reason, they have one of the best goalies in the world. They have a they still have a star defenseman in Victor Hedman. Uh, Nikita Kutrov can you’re you’re battling along the boards and then he wins the battle and then he sneaks the back door pass to Braden Point right on the blue paint. It’s it’s you you don’t see it coming when it comes to how Nikita Crut can just kill uh kill the Panthers at times. But it’s funny because the last two playoff series for the Panthers against the Lightning, Nikita Crut zero goals in in the last 10 games there. So I still trust the Tampa Bay Lightning and and what they do. The Toronto Maple Leafs, they’ve taken a little bit of a step back obviously with losing Mitch Mner. Yeah, they filled around the around the edges there, but you still can’t replace over a hundred points and and especially a guy who’s running who ran their power play on their five forward power play. So, I think it might be a little bit of a of a of a step back year for the Leafs. And honestly, when the cap opens up a little bit even next year, I believe that’s when the when Brad Tol will make a a trade to bring a superstar. And the whole conversation about four guys making 10 million won’t be as much of a conversation as it was uh a few years ago uh with there. Uh the the thing is uh when it comes to the the Metro division, I think the Washington Capitals are going to take a step a little bit of a step back. I think they’re still a very young team who’s going to really put a lot of emphasis there. The New York Rangers, there’s still a lot of question marks. Yeah, an experienced coach in uh Mike Sullivan. There was so much drama there. And I mean, the Carolina Hurricanes uh there I do eventually they got a breakthrough, right? I hope it’s not. Well, we’ve said that about the Yeah. Well, I mean, let’s Cam, let’s not forget I picked the Lightning to beat the Panthers. I think I did, too. We were both They were hot. They were hot on the Tampa Bay Lightning. So, I think Armando, my question for you is what would need to happen for the Panthers not to three repeat? What What could possibly happen for this team where you say that’s not going to happen this year? This the streak’s over. Because you look at this team right now and they’ve done everything they need to do to get back there for a fourth consecutive season and win a third straight Stanley Cup. Yeah. I mean, you you think that how the Panthers style of play with their relentless forche? I mean, if if the I it just comes down to how the other teams adjust. If they’re because the Panthers uh they are once they once they are about to gain the the blue line, they’re flipping the puck to go dump and chase. And if the other teams are faster than you, and if they get to the puck and they’re quick to get the support in, which the thing is the Panthers um and their ability to just uh use their edgework to get around the defenseman to be that first uh guy along the boards to win their battles, it doesn’t give the defense a lot of time to get that puck support for that for that quick first pass uh um from one corner to the next and then for them to get that first breakout pass out, which is something that the Panthers do so well in in their own end. So, it’s just a matter of how uh the other teams adjust and I mean from as as years go on that’s when team that’s when teams uh obviously teams watch tape but eventually it catches up and as the Panthers uh get older that’s what that’s how that’s what teams are going to be looking for. So, it comes down to how they win those dumping chases, how they gain the zone. Um, and yeah, the injuries is the obvious one, but it al also uh for for the Panthers on their side of things, how healthy is their is their uh is their goalending department going going to be? Thankfully, with the Olympic break, uh, Sergey Babroski is likely going to have that time to uh be off. So, that’s also a big plus in the goalending department because this worked for the Four Nations last year. He had those he had that time off to just um work um work on work on his uh on his technique and everything. So that that that’s also a big plus for for for the Panthers there. Also Aaron Ecklad even before the suspension this year he got some time off more than more than more than a month’s worth of time when it comes to all that. So uh that’s that’s been the benefit of the Panthers then and it’s going to and hopefully that is for the Panthers now. For the Panthers though, they did sign Dell Terasov uh to um they got him in a trade from Columbus, another place that Bill Zto is very uh familiar with. Uh so they signed him so they’re expecting him to play uh 30 or 35 some odd games as as Babski is in the very last year of the deal. So if you can be 500 and get in a good uh seed although it doesn’t really matter for the Panthers uh uh being a uh being a because they’re the first team to win the Stanley Cup starting all theirh games on the road since the 2012 LA Kings I believe. Uh the the the fact is health is going to be once again once again the key factor. But as far as style of play um how they how other teams adjust to dump and chase. One last question for you, Armando. It’s a real quick yes or no. Okay, we’ve only asked this once because there’s very few teams we can ask this about, but for the Florida Panthers, is anything less than a third straight Stanley Cup a failure for this year? I mean, it h it would be because that’s the goal. That’s the reason why the guys came back that that you never want and it’s funny because although I’m not on the ice competing, you never want to have a summer ever again of not being the champion. You never want to have that feeling of losing. U you always want to be be the one the last one standing every single year. And obviously if you if they do end up losing that that that’s also that that could also be good for growth as well as far as like looking yourself in the mirror. As far as as far as the the mission to to three repeat, that is that that is the ultimate goal. I mean I mean and they have a chance to make history. This hasn’t been done since the early 80s. This hasn’t been done in the cap era. The Pittsburgh tried it. Tampa Bay tried it. Uh although the Blackhawks were able to get Hey, hey, watch your mouth. Hey, watch your mouth over there. They tried it, Tyler. They tried it. Hey, watch your mouth. But but although the Although the Blackhawks did get three of them, none of them were in consecutive years neither. And I mean, yeah, the the Panthers, I said this all of the all of the 2024 25 season, they’re the hunted. And that’s the same thing going into this season. Even though on on a random Tuesday or or Wednesday in the in the season, the Panthers might it might be the dog days of the season, but the other teams throughout the year, they see that logo, they see the Panthers are in town. They’re getting up for those games every single night. Even if the Panthers in game 50 50 something they might not they may not not be they’re still trying to at least get ready and and it’s all about getting hot at the right time and that’s every single time the Panthers have been able to to get it there and and you guys it was valid why a lot of people picked the Tampa Bay Lightning even this time around because how much they were hobbling in early April. So, I kind of understand why they were it was especially on that second end of a backto-back against the Detroit Red Wings where they put their AHL roster there. I I understand uh and and chances are I I feel like a lot of if they go that route again, people might uh people might have some second thoughts on whether to to say, “Oh, are will the Panthers be ready this time around?” I have some second thoughts on the videos that I’ve seen surface on social media of a new fourthline center on the Florida Panthers, Armando Veles. It must be AI generated. That’s that’s my only explanation because this guy’s just telling us that he’s not actually on the ice. But I I’ve seen a a AI video then. It It’s not real. It’s I thought it was real. I guess it’s unreal. Maybe we’ll see Armando suit up one of those games right before the playoffs where they’ve locked it in their seat. I think we could see Arondo out there. I’d love that. I’d love We could be We could be looking at one of the best teams in recent NHL memory. If not, even better. They’re going for lucky three.
