Ryan McLeod and Alex Lyon headline Buffalo Sabres free agency day

Ryan McLeod and Alex Lyon headline Buffalo Sabres free agency day

It’s been a busy day. The Sabres have made a trade. They have signed one of their own to a big extension. They’ve got a goalie. They’ve signed some depth forwards. So, there’s a lot to get to. The big thing to do is still out there, though. So, we’ll talk about it all coming up on a free agency edition of the Locked On Sabres podcast. There are a lot of moves to talk about on today’s show. a very, very slow free agency day that was marred by a threat by the NHL to all of its teams that we are going to ding somebody for tampering, that we are sick and tired of these 1201 announcements that just pay no respect to the process and just show off that we’ve all been talking to all these guys long before we were supposed to. I mean, with the Maple Leafs and with the Golden Knights, it’s a whole different conversation where maybe Vegas has been talking to Marner for as long as a year. That’s a different level of tampering. But we’ve known all these teams are talking, back channeling through agents, even the Sabres. I mean, other teams are probably more guilty of it than others, but we found out from Elliot Freriedman early this morning that Alex Lion was going to go to the Buffalo Sabres 7 hours before they were technically allowed to talk to him. So, everybody is doing it to some extent. And we’ll talk about all the moves the Sabres finally got around to making. Uh, the first of which, I mean, it really took an hourish to get to something at all. And then three, four hours before we got to anything of substance to talk about and even substance to talk about is giving them a little bit of credit. I have liked some of the moves that they have made today, but there is still the big move out there trading for or signing a top six forward. But there are some numbers to look at now with how many forwards they have on the roster. And we’ll talk about all that a little bit later on. But before that, we will talk about what they have done and especially we’ll start with how the day began. Kind of go a little rapid fire here to start today’s show on all the things that they did. And we’ll spend the much of today’s show on Ryan Mloud’s extension. And then um Alex Lion and goal, how that affects the goalie situation. Justin Danforth will talk a little bit because he’s from a new team. Um but let’s go to rapid fire here on what they did to start the day. And we’re going to start with Ryan Johnson. Ryan Johnson, who I’ve written off for a couple of years now, not ever thinking about him being a impactful player at the NHL level. He is now 23 years old. He will turn 24 in a couple of weeks. So, this is his age 24 year old season and he’s played 44 games in the National Hockey League. Typically, you’ve showed an ability to be an NHL player by this point and he has not quite done that yet. in the AHL. He’s been pretty good, but not so good that he’s banging down the door to get those call-ups. So, I was a little surprised to see the contract that Johnson got from the Sabres. It is a three-year deal, and that is the surprising element of it for to start is that it’s a three-year contract. The money is not surprising. $775,000 the minimum. Like, who cares? So, that’s not surprising part of it. It’s the three-year part and it’s the idea that in year two and in year three of Ryan Johnson’s contract, it is a one-way contract. So, that implies to me the Sabres would like him to this year or at least by next year have him be a regular in the NHL. Maybe a third pair of defenseman, maybe your seventh defenseman could be a reason why they let Jacob Bernard Docker walk for nothing. And then he goes to Detroit because they had their sights set on this guy is going to be our seventh defenseman moving forward. And Ryan Johnson and we’ve got one more year where we can kind of call him up and send him down and then they’re obviously planning on him being in Buffalo in years two and year three or else they wouldn’t have gave him the one-way contract in those years. So that’s how the day began. A couple of even more minor moves. Jack Raffthbone and Ammer signing on a two-year deal. We I like to kind of skip over the Rochester signings. This day usually is about Rochester. The Sabres do so little for their own roster that often, you know, they sign uh Mason Gearston. That’s a physical defenseman that’s going to be a Rochester guy. Like big day for Rochester. Um, so the Sabres make a trade very soon after the Johnson extension and they send out Sam Laferdy for a sixthround pick to Chicago. Now, this is a good move because it’s mostly an addition by subtraction. Sam Laferdy did nothing for the Buffalo Sabres last year and would have done nothing for the Buffalo Sabres this year. He was still under contract. He still had a couple of million bucks on that deal and even more than the money part of it because the Sabres are getting a little closer to the salary cap, but they still have a lot of room. Wasn’t really about that for me. It is they’ve got a lot of forwards under contract right now. And the bottom six is crowded and I can’t imagine wanting to see or seeing Sam Lafery in their bottom six to start the year. So, anybody willing to take him for free would have been fine to take the couple of million bucks off your salary. If Chicago wants to give you a six round pick on top of it, just give you a nice little, you know, scratchoff ticket at the draft in a year, then you take that too and you run with it. So, the Laferdy part of it to me is more about the subtraction of it and replacing him with replaceable players that I think are probably better. maybe the guy they signed and Danford who we talk about and Tyson Kak coming back. Uh that’s another Rochester signing I think. But honestly, Tyson Kak signs a three-year deal with the Buffalo Sabres and that’s a two-way contract. So, he could go up and down. I think Tyson Kak last year was a better player for the Buffalo Sabres than Sam Lafery. And I’m pretty sure they agreed and I’m pretty sure Lindy Ruff agreed because that’s kind of how they acted. But the big move the Sabres made today was Ryan Mloud. at least among amongst their own. It was Ryan Mloud who was an RFA signing a fouryear extension $5 million per year. This contract is a good value for Ryan Mloud. Ryan Mloud is a tremendous defender, a tremendous penalty killer. He is a tremendous skater and that’s kind of almost all I need to warrant a $5 million per year contract as long as you give me a little bit of offense, something that’s even modest to play on a third line. Well, last year Ryan Mloud went above that and obviously scored 20 goals for the Buffalo Sabres and added another 33 assists. So, a 53 point season, which was 23 points higher than his previous high. I think he absolutely earned a contract, maybe even above $5 million. I think last year he gave the Sabres more than $5 million of value. Now, the reason I like the contract, though, is it kind of bakes in a probable regression offensively for Ryan Mloud. 20 goals last year shooting 20.6% 20.6% shooting percentage is absolutely unsustainable. Nobody in the league will ever sustain 20% per year. Now Mloud does have a little bit of a high percentage for his career. It’s 14%. But it’s going to come down to back around 14% 13% 12% and instead of scoring 20 goals next year he might score 15 for you. But honestly, what you’re getting in him in all these other areas of the ice, his role being the third line center, not a top six guy, faceoffs, 52% last year, was one of the better savers at that. And his ability ability to penalty kill and even jump up in the top six. Like last year when he did have to jump up in the top six, it looked relatively good. If he only scores 15 goals for you next year, he’s doing enough other things to warrant the contract. And it’s not a crazy long-term if the offense completely evaporates and maybe he’s scoring singledigit goals and you know the penalty kill takes a step back and you’re going next year oo maybe we shouldn’t assign Ryan Mloud to that contract. You only sign him for four years. So I have a hard time finding a negative way of looking at this. I think everything looks good. Um I like the player a lot. He’s a very very good hockey player for the Buffalo Sabres and they need to hold on to all of those w with the jaws of life. And in this case, you got a guy who wants to stay, you lock him up. He didn’t ask for a premium, a Buffalo premium. So to me, this is just a a noonsense great contract allaround good player and he is going to solidify that third line center role for the Buffalo Sabres for the next four years. And I think it’s one spot that you don’t have to think about as long as he’s here. And hell, when he’s at the end of it, 29 years old, as good of a skater as he is, I have to imagine that there’s a future where he signs another contract with the Buffalo Sabres. So, Ryan Mloud is back. And again, expect some goal regression, but expected even with that, this is a good contract. When we come back, what about the new guys? We don’t have a lot of new guys yet. I was waiting all day. I’m I’m waiting to see, you know, if they had done something big at 1:00. I would have recorded the show five hours ago, but was waiting and waiting and waiting like, “Okay, give me something. What? They got to do something by the end of today, right?” And I saw these couple of moves and I’m like, “All right, here we go.” The Mloud extension and now you got a couple of new guys, Danforth, Lion. Let’s talk about them when we come back here on the Lockdown Savers podcast. Today’s episode of Lockdown Sabers is presented by FanDuel. Listen, not a day that often gives us positive memories. Obviously 18 years ago today is July 1st, 2007. And that is probably the worst day of my life as a Buffalo Sabre fan. That isn’t a game, right? A game game seven against Carolina or maybe there’s others, but um Drury and Briier leaving on the same day. I mean, you could argue the franchise still hasn’t recovered from that happening. And there’s the really Leno signing which was not that offensive in the moment but everyone knew it was an overpay and really what that was was it wasn’t Brad Richards and everybody wanted Brad Richards for weeks and the Sabres couldn’t even get a meeting. Um there have been some fun moments too. The Christian Airhoff 10-year contract was a fun one even if you didn’t agree with it. Um, they did sign Kyle Aposo to a long-term deal on July 1st and he was the number one free agent on that day. That year they signed Taylor Hall doesn’t really count because that was a free agency day in October because of COVID. Um, but he was the number one free agent. So, there have been a couple of days, but usually it’s a day of wanting the Sabres to do things, do big things, and then not really having that happen. Well, today they really didn’t do big things. We’re waiting and hoping that we get this Bo Byum trade. And I’ll talk more about that in the third segment of today’s show because there was a new report on that today and I think the landscape has changed a little bit on a Bum trade because of how many forwards they now have. Um, but they did add a couple of guys from the outside. Not many, but there’s really two main ones to talk about today. And the most interesting is Alex Lion. The Sabres went for a goalender. I was not sure that they would go for a goalie. I think I would have bet and I think I said this that my guess would be they would go for a goalender that Adam Singh is comfortable starting the season with Lukan and Levi that’s just something you say before free agency just in case you don’t get a guy. Well, they got a guy. And listen, this was a very, very weak free agent class. When we talked about goalie a couple weeks ago, and when we discussed rankings of different lists and, you know, sites, the Sabres got what some ranked as the number two free agent goalender. And the number one free agent goalender in Jake Allen didn’t make it to the market. He signed a wild five-year, $1.8 million per year contract to stay in New Jersey. did not cash in at all as the number one goalie on the market. So really the you could argue the Sabres got the best goalie that changed teams today. Um not to say he’s amazing, but Alex Lion was about as good as you were going to do if you wanted to bring in competition for Lucinin and Levi. So Alex Lion, what do we know about him? 32 years old. He has played most of his NHL games in the last three seasons after turning 30. In his first five years, six years of of being a pro, seven years even, he’s an AHL guy, even a little bit in the ECHL. Um, Alex Lion, he kind of made a name for himself in Florida two years ago getting pressed into duty because again before that he was good in the AHL, like very good AHL goalender. won a championship with the Chicago Wolves. Um that was in 2022, so not that long ago. And then after that happens, Florida, I think how it went is they ran into some injuries. Spencer Knight, remember, went into the substance abuse program and Babski was kind of letting them down or been injured. I actually forgot why Babski went out. I think he actually just wasn’t playing well. And no, he was hurt. He was hurt. 2022 23. A big reason we always remember the Hudson fashioning kick goal as a as a outside force that kept the Sabres out of the playoffs that year. Alex Lion was another one. He beat the Sabres head-to-head. One of their final games of the year, their second to last loss. Lion had 39 saves on 40 shots against and Florida beat the Sabres two to one. Huge crushing. I mean that that that game determined that final playoff spot. Lion down the stretch for Florida that year as they made it by one point. He played 14 games, started 14 games, nine wins, four losses, two assists, a 912 save percentage. Played really, really well for Florida down the stretch. And again, he had not played more than six games, five games. Actually, he had never started double digit games in a single NHL season before that campaign where he started 14 and they were all at the end. So that kind of made his mark as an NHL goalender. Like I’m here to stay. He actually started that playoff series for Florida in round one. Um started four three three of those games. He ends up getting you know pulled for Babski and Babski never goes back out uh obviously because he they had the investment in him. But he was good enough to start those playoffs against Boston. And again from there he’s an NHL goalender. Detroit brings him in and Detroit gives him a real chance to be the 1A in 23-24. He starts 43 games and he does relatively okay. A 9004 save percentage. It wasn’t that bad. I got some advanced numbers for you on that in a second. Last year, little worse, 896 save percentage. Detroit starts going with other guys, Cam Talbot and uh Lion goes from 43 starts to 26 starts. And obviously Detroit wanted better because they traded for John Gibson. But if you take the last three seasons, which again, I mean that is 57, we’re talking about almost the entirety of his career as a starter. Um he started 15 games in his first five years after debuting in the NHL. And then after those five years with 15 starts, he has started again, what are we talking about? 60 uh no 80 85 85 starts since then. So just in his last 85 starts, I’m just taking his last three seasons since he became an NHL regular. And if you look at his goals saved above expected at evolving hockey out of I just said a certain minimum 97 goalies that qualify out of 97 goalies that qualify that have played enough in the last three seasons. Where does Lion rank in goal saved have expected? He ranks I had him here. Where’d he go? Control F Lion. 32nd 32nd out of 97. So you’ve gotten some good goalending from him. And maybe last year he was struggling a little more than than past years, but he has been a good goalender for the last three seasons. And to me, this is a a good bet. This is about as good as you were going to do. You got some good advance numbers. You got it. It’s definitely similar to some of their signings of the past. And that is maybe what will give you more pause than anything. It’s nothing to do with Lion. It’s more to do with Doesn’t this kind of sound like Eric Comry? Doesn’t this kind of sound like Carter Hutton? You know, guy who’s never really been a solidified starter, kind of a career backup andor minor leaguer who had a good couple years and then he kind of turns that into an expanded role. The difference though is Lion was two years removed from that where he started 43 games and Comry never did that. Hutton did. But I think just because the last two guys that are somewhat similar didn’t work out, I don’t think that should mean you should assume this one won’t. I think there’s actually a really good chance that Alex Lion starts the most games for the Buffalo Sabres this year. I think Lucin would be the slight favorite on that right now. But I would bet going into the year that Levi starts the year in Rochester. he has a chance to win a job out of camp, but I’d bet Rochester and that you’re going to see an even split between Lucin and Lion or just whoever plays better is going to take the reigns. Um, by the way, if you are wondering, so out of those 97 goalies, goal stated, Lion ranks number 30 32. Uh, Lucinin or Levi should go to first. Devin Levi ranks 47th out of 97. Probably better than you thought, right? That’s because two years ago he was way better than everybody everybody realized. And Lucin ranks 57. So 32, 47, and 57. I mean, by that you could really make a good case that Lion’s going to be their number one goalie this year. I don’t think that’s out of the realm of possibility at all. And it could go really well. And honestly, this is where like this is why adding a goalie was smart because to me, if it doesn’t work out with Lion and Levi is ready to make the jump to the NHL and UPL’s doing fine, you just find somewhere for Lion to go. You trade him for whatever or you wave him and he gets claimed or you wave him and you send him to Rochester. It’s such I don’t even know if I Sorry, I haven’t mentioned his cap here. $1.5 million for two years. It’s nothing. Absolutely nothing. Uh, and if you wave him, you get a million saved. It’s $500,000. Like, it it’s literally nothing to wave him if you have to get to that point. And I don’t think they will. And then the other player to talk about quickly here is Justin Danforth. And the only reason to mention him really is because he’s on a one-way contract for two years. This is a little bit of an interesting player. 32 years old. It’s a two-year deal, $1.8 million. Spent the last couple of years with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He is small. He is a depth player that plays on your fourth line and he is 5 foot8 pounds. Now do not give me the oh another small guy for the Buffalo. The Sabres go before signing Danforth before July 1st. They were the second tallest team in the league and the fifth heaviest. They are big. They could afford a small guy. And that’s what Danforth is. 5 foot8 pounds. Last year, nine goals, 21 points, playing 14 minutes a night. The year prior for Columbus, 10 goals, 26 points, playing 1416. I think two things could be true here. I think this player is a little bit better than Sam Laferdy. So, I think they upgraded there. And I also think he’s not a very good player. If you look at some of his advanced stats, Danforth, I think you’re going to find, is a player that gets run over and he’s not a very good penalty killer. So, I think you’re looking at a fourthline healthy scratch guy, spare part that I’d like to keep off the penalty kill. His numbers do not look positive in that regard at all. And you’ve got good penalty killers. You’ve got Mloud, you’ve got Greenway, you’ve got Alex Tuck, Tage even can do it. Krebs. I mean, I just I wouldn’t want him on the penalty kill when he’s in the lineup. I think you’re looking at a fourthliner that, you know, just come in, be a little bit better than Laferdy, and be a rotational piece. Now, Danforth being and he’s 32 years old, by the way. So, I don’t think there’s really any upside here. Josh Don, also, by the way, another guy that might maybe is a penalty killer. Um, the thing that Danforth adds to though is what we were talking about to wrap here, which is how many forwards the Buffalo Sabres have and how that impacts this top six search. That when we return here on Lockdown Sabres. Today’s episode’s presented by Monarch Money. If you ever wish that managing your money felt easier, with Monarch Money, it can. Wrapping things up here in the Lockdown Sabres podcast with what they haven’t done yet as we are through or about to be through one day of free agency recording this on Tuesday night. The Sabres still have Bo Byum on their roster and there was a report about Byum this afternoon and that came from Darren Dreger at 1:36 p.m. and he said things are percolating around Sabres Dman Bowen Byum. Trade conversations are happening with Calgary, Vegas, LA, St. Louis among those that are interested. Also hearing an offer sheet on Byum is being contemplated. Couple things on Byum and then gets the forward point. One of those four teams, one of them’s already out. LA has signed two defenseman including Brian Dumlain and I think Cody Cece is the other one. So they’re out of it. So Calgary Vegas St. Louis. The offer sheet part of it. If Bo Byum was to get offer sheetated, that would be a very tough call for Kevin Adams. And if I’m the Sabres, I’m really trying to avoid him getting offer sheetated. Not because I wouldn’t want a match, it’s because I would feel stuck and I would feel like the best outcome right now for Bo Byum is that he is traded with something for a top six forward. If he gets offer sheetated, that’s out. That’s over. And the reason why is if he were to be offer sheeted by say Vegas, Vegas is aggressive, right? And they’re listed there. If Vegas were to offer sheet Bo, let’s say it’s 7 million bucks or a little bit lower. You’re talking about a first round pick and a third round pick as compensation. You’d have to decide as the Buffalo Sabres between letting Byum walk for one for a first round pick that you expect to be late and a third if it were Vegas. If it were Calgary because Gavin McKenna a generational first overall pick is next year. Calgary feels like they could have a bad year. If they were to do it, maybe I’d be more open to taking their offer sheet compensation, but most teams are going to have late first and I’m not going to want that. The alternative is to match it. And if you didn’t know this rule, here it is. If you match a player’s offer sheet, you’re not allowed to trade him for one year. So, there is no match the offer sheet on and then just trade him for the forward. It No, no, you match that offer sheet. He’s on the Buffalo Sabres for a full calendar year. You could trade him after that, assuming it’s more than a one-year deal, but he is a saber for a year if you match it. And if you don’t, then you only get draft pick compensation. And we just saw from this last weekend, nobody wanted the ninth pick. It’s really hard to trade first round picks, let alone first round picks at the end of the draft. So, to me, it would be a tough call and it would be uh it would feel like you’re stuck a little bit if the Sabres were to get offer sheetated on the Bo Byron front. So, we’ll see what they end up doing. I still feel like a trade is the most likely outcome. Um, maybe to avoid the offer sheet though, they try to sign Brom and then to to get rid of the offer sheet possibility and continue to have conversations with other team other teams. Now, here’s where forwards a little more interesting because all along it’s been buying for a forward, right? By him for a forward. The Buffalo Sabres right now have 14 forwards under contract. They’re crowded. You only get 12, right, on a on a roster for a game. And nobody’s keeping more than 134 on an active roster. Usually it’s 13. You get one extra or we’ll keep one extra. Right. Right now, the Buffalo Sabres on Puckedia have listed Josh Norris, Ta Thompson, Ryan Mloud, Jason Zucker, Alex Tuck, Jordan Greenway, Jack Quinn, Justin Danforth, Pton Krabs, Beck Malenstein, Zack Benson, Josh Don, Yuri Kik, Tyson Kak. Kak probably is not on the NHL club to start the year. There’s 13. If you trade him for a forward, who’s out? Who’s out? This is why maybe you package Venson Kik somebody that’s Quinn with Byum because is Krebs out? Maybe. Is Beck Malenstein out? Is I’m kind of out of ideas already. There’s not really many. You’re not going to do a Josh Don just acquired him. So, in my opinion, Justin Danforth, I guess you could give up on that very quickly, but you sign him to a multi-year deal. I would assume they are going to want him to play um a little bit to be on the roster at least. I think it’s a little curious what they would do. I think you got to package Byum with a forward just to even make the space which is why it’s really important they got rid of uh Sam Laferdy today. So I don’t know who would move out without being packaged in a Byum trade. uh maybe w keep an eye on Krebs because otherwise they’re kind of I I don’t want to say the words all set because I think they need a top six forward and they still probably need two but they have enough bodies to fill out a roster to not they could not make another forward acquisition and technically go to the season with what they have. But I think I know we I know from what I know about Saber fans and my opinion that everybody would would want to see them do a lot more than that. Let’s hope that we get that deal done. Nothing yet. See, maybe it drags into the summer a little bit more. That’s going to do it for us today here on the Locked On Sabres podcast. Of course, there was a lot else that happened in the league. The Marner deal got made official today to Vegas. If you’d like to check out all that happened in NHL free agency, be sure to check out the Locked On NHL podcast. Find Locked on.HL on YouTube or wherever you listen to your podcast and we will talk to you next time about anything else the Sabres have done and we’ll start to look at some projected lineups for the start of the year because we’re just about there. We’re just about able to do that. So, and I want to talk about the salary cap because the Sabres actually might end up spending close to the salary cap. So, we’ll talk about all that on our next show. So, come back for that. Again, you want the text club, join sububtex.com/lockdownsavers to sign up. And be sure to check us out on YouTube. 1. Just wait until Adams get's screwed on a offer sheet, all hie did was sign cheap pieces that may or may not do anything. Still no top 6 winger, this organization is a train wreck.

  2. As a Lyon fan youre gonna love him. Just to clarify, in the first season he started the season as the 3rd goalie, and got thrust into the #1 option in mid december, was top 5 in SV percentage until February and was overplayed like crazy and had detroit tied for the last playoff spot. Last year he was becoming the #1 in Detroit until he got hurt, came back played great for 2-3 games and got hurt again.

If he stays healthy he is going to be excellent.

  3. Byram is easy. Tell him if he take an offer sheet they will match it and he better produce to get a trade if thats what he wants. He won't take the sheet since he wants out this year.

  4. Golisano wouldn't sign Drury or Briere and both of them were going to sign for budget value. I think Drury wanted 5mil a year for 5 yrs. Totally reasonable, yeah that's when it all fell apart.

  5. Calgary is close to a full rebuild… Could you get a Weegar someway, somehow? Gotta keep trying even if it's seems futile. Byrum + Benson for Weegar or Byrum + a pick… + Something?

  6. Also Helleson RFA in Anaheim idk if he signed yet they had cap but they're burning thru it quick, about 95hits in 50 games.. offer 3mil, see if they match 4-4.5?

  7. Why let Bernard-Docker go for nothing?? Now they're down to just two RHD again, Kesselring and Timmins. I don't get it.

  8. Joe, have His Majesty McLeod call Helleson (friendly player call ups) and tell him emperor Tage wants to offer him a 'Lordship'. Say: "hey Drew, this his Majesty McLeod, Emperor Tage asks how douth 'Lord Helleson' sound?" (of course we're banking on ANA running low in cap) 👍

  9. Try firing Kevin Adams and the Assistant coaches. They done nothing for 6 years please Terry. Or sell the team when your Florida domicile becomes permanent. Ask Galassino

  10. Well the rangers got a 1st and 2nd as part of their return for keandre miller. Here comes the offer sheet for Byram…
Other than that, adams blows.. to rely on growth from Quinn and benson and even tuch to score 36 again to replace Peterka production?? Yeah F him. He’s tried that the last 3 seasons. Grow a pair Kevin. Make a move.. anything.. Jesus Christ…. The fans might respect you more even if you take a swing and miss…. Better than sitting on your ass doing nothing

  11. His Majesty King Tuch 👑 and Lord Kesselring can call Ehlers (friendly player call ups)👍
