joining me on this Tuesday evening by Zen Caster is my friend Mike albo and Mike the off season is upon us free agency has begun the draft is over signings are being made moves are being made cottages are being uh flown to and uh I got to say for the first couple of days over I should say over the last couple of days things with the Islanders have been dare I say uplifting and pleasant it’s a very strange feeling that the Islanders have have done pretty well for themselves over the last couple of days between the draft and free agency uh how are you feeling right now uh as you know as far as the Islanders go and the uh additions that they’ve made in the last few days I I think Pleasant is a great way to put it and and before we get going I do want to say that for the first time in our history I think we’re dedicating an episode this episode is dedicated to Jacob trouba um I but yeah I I can’t remember uh I what would you call it frenzy week with the with free agency and the draft um like this one where it it it is Pleasant like it it was all good news basically at an Islander Camp throughout right there was no uh no reasons for consternation which is really rare um because when when it comes to free agency day and it’s now kind of a a tired cliche but you basically want to be um the you know when we used to say about Brian straight like you know Brian Straight had a good game you know he had a good game when you didn’t weren’t talking about Brian straight after the game right and that’s kind of how I feel about the Islanders right now is that they nobody’s really talking about them um yeah tell me about it we’ll get into that too we’ll get to that but I mean that as a in a good way like there’s been uh no mistakes there’s been no or you know we we should say at least doesn’t look like there have been any mistakes made um they made some dare I say tidy pieces of you know they were very uh tidy and shrewd I guess I would say dare I say those words um in the way they approached uh both the draft and free agency measured is another word you could say but yeah I’m I’m really happy with the moves they made the moves they didn’t make and just the general kind of attitude and the Vibes in in Islander country right now are really uh they are really Pleasant um yeah so yeah I’m really excited about this episode there’s so much to get to obviously it’s our last one for the the the season um and I’m not just even talking about the surface level stuff right the the CLA move the Riley extension the draft picks Etc like the the stuff if you’re in you’re an Islander fan in the weeds like that stuff’s been really pleasant too uh the the shade and Freud stuff the the stuff going on in Italy like there’s just been a lot of stuff for there’s been a lot of good things um to kind of be to enjoy I guess for Islander fans I you know I went from and and we’re going to talk about this how Monday went for everybody but the way I look at it is I went from thinking if the Islanders don’t sign anybody today that’s probably the best move they can possibly make because there was a lot of movement we’re going to talk a lot about a lot of those moves in a minute a lot of money being thrown around in the first hour it was like over $700 million it ended up being well over a billion by the end of the day in contracts and I thought to myself you know what if they just are like we’ll figure this out via trade and we’ll just go with what we got for now I don’t think that would have been the worst thing it would have been a little disappointing I think for people but I think ultimately probably at least you didn’t get into a mistake and then about a little less than two hours later I was thinking to myself damn did the Islanders get to make the best deals of the day and one of those guys was just resigning one of their own guys uh and they did indeed end up on a few uh you know best move lists uh and this is a couple of days after coming off of uh some of the winners lists over at the draft so it’s been a fun couple of days a lot of smiling I think from Islanders fans still a little a little some people out there still thinking that they didn’t do enough but we’ll get that in a minute obviously some teams in the division were were did get better let be honest about that too we’ll talk about that in a minute we’re going to go backwards here so we’re going to start with free agency we then talk about the draft and some other stuff in the second half and like Mike said we’re gonna clean the notebook out today because this is going to be our season finale barring any other kind of moves and stuff uh and it is notable that L larell did not speak yet so maybe there are more moves coming maybe Lou just decided to go on vacation and talk when he’s ready to talk so uh we might be back at some point butum assuming that that doesn’t happen this is going to be our season finale so reminder we are on patreon at patreon.com Islanders anxiety plans start as low as two bucks a month you get add free episodes bonus podcasts and a whole lot more All Summer Long don’t think that signing up for a hockey podcast patreon in the summer is a bad idea because I’m telling you right now we’re going to be doing stuff like our mailbag episodes our non- hockey podcast we’re gonna have written posts and maybe some fun stuff along the way uh that we just decided to throw together at the last minute so sign up today patreon.com anxiety okay let’s get into the free agency so remember when free agency day like meant we had to wait till noon to hear about the trade the deals and like nobody you know nobody could say anything because a satellite was going to vaporize you from space if you said anything before noon well those days are over because now 11 o’clock the deals were rolling in sometimes the night before and by one a lot of signings happened there were Stam Coast Marsh so Brady Shay uh all these other guys we’re all signing in all these different places uh Chris tanv finally came home to Toronto and y y Sam Reinhardt resigned in Florida for obvious reasons and this is when I was thinking to myself right maybe if the Islanders don’t do something maybe this isn’t the best thing this isn’t the worst thing that happens but around 145 the first one I saw was Stephan Rosner who was like sounds like the Islanders are talking to Anthony duclair about five minutes later boom official announcement an the Islanders have signed Anthony duclair and uh also right right after it they’ve resigned Mike Riley we’re going to get into the parameters of the deals in a second but what was your initial reaction to seeing the news that the Islanders had signed both duclair and Riley we don’t need to talk too much about Riley you guys all know how we feel about Riley but like what was your initial reaction to seeing that the duclair signing had happened before you even knew about the parameters of the deal I was like you I I just there we got to a point where uh people were kind of making fun of the Islanders and the Ducks yes for for being the two teams that sat out this crazy uh right you know frenzy like you were saying and then um I I was resigned to it to the Islanders just not doing anything and kicking the can down the road maybe waiting for for the for everyone to get back from Venice before they they made the moves or whatever but um then uh yeah the the when the news came down first of all I want to also say that credit to the Islanders for once again um breaking their own news because as you said that the right we knew where like Brett pesy was going to the Devils during the Stanley Cup Final basically right yeah two of those yeah yeah well I mean I think they were the only team honestly who who beat the Insiders to the deals you know it wasn’t Elliot fredman uh tweeting out that uh you know duclair was going to the Islanders or anything yeah it was the Islanders tweeting it and then everyone uh retweeting and like you said Stephan Rosner uh and um had said that he was starting to hear some Rumblings about duclair and then the Islanders tweeted it out um so credit to the Islanders there so that made me happy to see that they still have they still got it um yeah and like during the trade deadline stuff we were talking about how neither one of us were were too thrilled with the idea of duclair and the more I thought about it um the more I was thinking we the Islanders have just been connected to this guy so many times for so long almost like Riley um tasko is I think in this in this pot now the the the Former Future Islanders and uh you chane Pinto is fast becoming one we’ll get to him later yeah yeah exactly like there’s there are and I and so I was just like a God we’re doing this duclair stuff again so i’ I’ve just been um you like almost I’ll believe it when I see it with him right in terms of coming to the island and he’s here and I’m excited I think that the term and uh when I saw it was a four-year deal I said okay that makes a lot of sense basically you get him through his prime I he you get him through baral’s Prime the rest of Corbett’s Prime this is a good top six Winger and he’s also the type of player that yeah he’s going to bring a a a skill set the Islanders desperately need in terms of speed and some offensive flare uh a player who’s really who’s not afraid to um turn on the afterburners and uh you know create scoring chances out of nothing from his own Zone he’s got the familiarity with with W yes um but what I think the most important thing about him joining the team is that he puts everybody into the right spot which is something that the Islanders haven’t really had since the uh honestly since Jordan Everly left I guess you would say um they they they’ve been rotating players in and out of the top six too often now they have that I think they have a Bonafide top six where it’s clearly you know barzel Horvat duclair Nelson pal Mar and then like you know Lee or COV if if he really works out they have but they have like the the makings of a top six they have players who know they’re in the top six then they’ll have players who know um um like pier angal and Simon holstroms of the world uh Paso like I’m I’m a middle sixer if if these guys stick around of course uh and then they’ll have a a fourth line too so this is uh that’s really important I think that this this addition really pushes everybody into uh the right spot um and I’m I’m really excited I think that he’s the the a player of the Islanders have been linked to for a while be because the fit has been there and uh there’s there’s so much to like just about duclair’s fit and his skill set here but but I also love the fact that the Islanders got this player for this term and this amount of money and didn’t do something like the the Kraken did with Chandler Stevenson who’s like an effective player sure but they gave him like a sevene de money yeah like exactly like TF too Joel Edmonson yeah like even the TANF situation yeah everyone’s like this is exactly what the Leafs need sure right but you’re the there’s a huge caveat there there’s very there’s no caveats with this contract and this signing right it’s just a cut and dried this is a perfect deal for a perfect fit no there’s nobody who can you know fans can be fans however they want maybe you just don’t you never liked Anthony duclair the player because he was a ranger whatever it was but and and your pist is here fine you can be a fan however you want but I think anybody just looking at it rationally would have to work they’d have to work really really really really hard to find um something that’s with this signing and and the Ry one for that just like the the the Tidy business that the Islanders did right on July 1 um and the frankly the the untidy business that they didn’t do which was just as important this is the definition of Tidy pieces of business right here this is the right player at the right position for the right team this guy is a dedicated left wing that has scored 20 23 31 24 goals in his career yes he’s bounced around a little bit bit uh you know which might be a bit of a red flag but he’s apparently been really beloved in the locker rooms wherever he’s gone um and you know for a team that for a fan base that complains a lot about the kind of rotating left wing spot on the top line whether it’s Andrew Lee or casy cikis or you know Leo karov or whoever it is this is a guy who you put in that spot and you kind of walk away uh he’s gonna be playing with two very very good passers in in uh bo horv and Matt barzel and if that doesn’t work for whatever reason well guess what he could play a line with uh Brock Nelson and Kyle palmary that might work too so this was the the perfect fit I thought I hadn’t even thought about it although I did mention at one point to Arthur staple our friend like you know you know duclair was coached by W what about him and I think he was like I don’t know maybe he like yeah maybe and sure enough there he is now this was all before I kind of knew what the parameters of the deal were and then once it came out you know I don’t know maybe a half hour or so later that this was a four-year contract worth $3.5 million annually I just about jumped through the roof like you couldn’t get the smile off my face for the rest of the day this was just I couldn’t believe that this guy I called it psychotic on Twitter like I don’t know why Anthony duclair kind of took this because this is not a lot of money relative to again a July 1 contract this guy’s basically making peanuts and I think for him probably that first number is the most important thing four years he hasn’t had really a whole lot of stable setups he was in Florida for three seasons but then he was in San Jose and Tampa last year he was in Ottawa for two seasons he was with Arizona for two and a half season so he’s bounced around a lot I think he wants to settle in someplace I think he wants to find a place to make his home and I think he sees that in the Islanders whether it’s w whether it’s the situation whether it’s a team whether it’s long I don’t know what it is but to me that just blew my mind and and in a day on a day when the numbers are absolutely nuts uh and there have been a few budget you know more budget minding contracts that you know talk about in a little bit this to me blew my mind and the fact that Riley came back on a oneye $11.25 million contract also was sort of like wow I mean know Riley I think liked it here and I think he knows what they what role they kind of want for him but to me these were by and large two of the best deals given out on a day when teams often sign contracts that they will immediately regret and I was telling my wife you know trying to explain the whole reason why I’ve been sitting at my laptop all day when it was really nice outside and they you know she was in my sister-in-law’s pool her and my daughter went to the beach and I’m like no I can’t leave the computer I got to sit here and listen to tsn’s Trade Center which again I’ll get to a little bit later uh but I was like you know this is kind of where sometimes you can a team hands out a deal that you immediately know is a bad deal and this guy’s going to get waved he’s going to get traded they’re going to buy him out you can see it coming a mile away these are not those deals barring any kind of like shocking development so nothing nothing to not like about this I mean you know listen and here’s the thing I see people like oh well they’re not a Stanley Cup Contender this is little you know they didn’t make a big swing no they didn’t make a big swing but is this roster better than it was a week ago yes it is it just is with Anthony slotting in duclair and now you know Riley for a whole end of the year this is a better roster than it was last year there’s no there’s really no argument and like I said before that when we did our episode with Ethan Sears like the thing that I really wanted from this this week was the Islanders to I set a trade to trade for a player on like a really reasonable contract that you’d have to you know jump through hoops to uh to bash and I wanted them to get bashed and I was waiting for that but everybody you know it was it was universally kind of laed with a golf clap because the like we’ll we we’ll definitely get to the Trade Center stuff and like the Islanders did their thing they signed their guys and it was um kind of like oh by the way that happened over there there’s no reason to even get into it because it just makes so much sense like the when when these big signings happen on July 1st it’s the uh the headline Grabbers whether it’s a the player like Stam Coast or the term and the deal uh like the Joel Edmonson contract or the Chandler Stevenson contract these ones that are getting ripped apart or just just deep dived in general are the ones that you don’t really want to be involved in for one reason or another this one I mean I’m sure there’s a lot of people who have no idea that duclair signed with the Islanders yet like they’ll find out when he comes to town right when he comes into uh you know Vancouver or Calgary if you only found out about the signings via tsn’s Trade Center you definitely didn’t know that signed with the Islanders but we also can’t forget uh Maxim sov who also obviously signed we talked about him so and I did forget about him times throughout this entire summer um the the one other thing about duclair like you said that it’s what I what I like about the deal is on a human level is that he he could have gotten a a bigger fatter contract one way or another absolutely out there um but the fact that he chose the Islanders is I think it’s starting to show you a couple things one that the the very obvious one is Patrick W’s effect on on recruiting players especially ones that he’s coached before um if if Anthony duclair and Patrick wad didn’t get along there’s no way he’s here right so there’s that um and the other one is that maybe the Secret’s getting out a little bit about why yeah they the the everyone slams their fists against the table about the no state tax in Florida and Vegas and whatever and I’m sick of hearing about it or the uh the putting your your name in bright lights in whether it’s Toronto or Montreal or New York or playing in a Canadian Market the pros and cons that come there maybe the Secret’s getting out a little bit here with the Islanders where hey if you’re the type of guy that’s been really effective but hasn’t been able to to find a home and players like that exist like they they really they’re a lot more um than just Anthony duclair like the island is a good place to come and settle down and and take a breath for a few years and you’re you’re gonna be able to to be you’re going to be happy here because you’re you’re rich on Long Island and uh you can go to the beach go to the you can golf all this stuff you want to do the room is really tight they all get it like it’s it’s a really good place to sign a contract like this at this point in your life I think is is a big thing here um so the other thing I that I like about players like this duclair is going to be one of those guys where you know a couple years from now you know barring any bad luck we’re like God you know Anthony declair can you believe he’s played more games for the Islanders than he’s played for any other team now because he’s the most he’s ever played was 172 for for Arizona in three seasons so he’ll you know by the third season of this deal he should surpass that if he’s healthy um without a problem and but he’s played so many at so many places with so many players that and he’s got a great reputation for being like a very um you know good guy to be around fun and Etc that you know that kind of player is good because he knows a lot of people and could say like oh man you would love the island if you I can I can tell you that uh you’d be able to settle down here if you have a family all this stuff so I think that’s also something that’s really good when you sign a player like this who’s bounced around a bit um because he’s he’s G to be able to his network is is uh quite wide let’s say because of the amount of teams he’s played for definitely definitely and again he seems like a guy that with a lot of friends JG Paso among them who played with him in Ottawa couple other things before we move on uh he turns 29 uh in August so he’s not really too old although he’s been around a long long time yes he did start with the Rangers and I remember he he got a lot of publicity at that point and I’m looking at the numbers now and he played a grand total of 18 games and had one goal I know I cannot believe that I feel like he was like almost Matt Ry before Matt Ry like it was a huge deal and then they traded Arizona and the Keith Yandle deal and it was like wow can you believe they’re giving this young guy up for Keith Yandle I know Rangers machine strikes if you would if IID asked you how many games did he play with the Rangers what would you guess I would have guessed three seasons yeah I think I would have guessed like 150 games just because of the what he was talking about nope 18 games one goal six assists seven points that’s it so unbelievable anyway uh yeah and so he’s bounced around he’s you know he’s already played with Chicago and San Jose so I don’t think he was gonna go back to either of those places was 10th in Calder Trophy voting uh in his first full season um you know playoff numbers not great defensive Acumen not great I don’t care this guy was the right fit for the right number uh I am interested to see uh how it works he’s got a nice he’s a handsome guy he’s got nice you know facial hair going on he’s got the dreads going on curious to see how he looks in gum training camp he uh posted a picture on his Instagram of him as a little kid you know short hair no no facial hair and was like you know day won with a little crying laughing emoji so he gets it and uh I think we it’ll be fine I think it’ll be a good it’ll be a good fit again we know we know Mike Riley’s a good fit so that contract too worked out really really well um so that was the Islanders day uh real quick though we should might as well talk about these guys we have a little bit of breaking news here uh Mike Mike was joking in our group chat today about where’s the where’s the like the Bridgeport guys where are those guys how come they’re not getting signed well they just added to just as we started to sit down and talk about this podcast they added uh a center named Frederick carlstrom who was in The Stars system scored 21 goals last year for the Texas Stars uh was raft drafted in the third round 90th overall in the 2016 draft which is 10 spots later then Anthony duclair so go figure uh and then they also added a guy named Mark gcom another uh forward from Massachusetts uh who had nine goals 20 points for the avford Canucks last year so there’s your Bridgeport de at least for the beginning here are you happy at the uh additions of two guys that you never heard of before just now Mark gcom and Frederick carlstrom yeah yeah and and you I was saying it tongue and cheek because I remember last year the only new face the Islanders really brought in with Julian goer right and and people were like oh man where’s he this is another by low master class by Chris lamilla like fashing where’s he going to fit and you and I were like I don’t really think Julie goate is going to be the guy that’s going to uh make break this season and um he he had by definition the exact season you would expect out of that kind of player right like played a handful of games looked good for a couple made some terrible mistakes and others that cost the Islanders points never heard from again so uh yeah that’s it that I’m happy to see they’re starting to trickle in really excited my pick was Nick Paton um and uh I also you know made that prediction about Tyler Johnson he’s still out there yeah he’s G I’m telling you I think like a mid- August PTO or or onee vet minimum deal that’s my prediction so uh yeah we’ll see but yeah can’t can’t be too can’t be too mad about Mark Gom gatam Gom whatever coming to the island I guess it’s gcom I don’t know uh both those guys are making 775k uh people this this time of year they’re like what one year oneway deal what does that mean it means he’s gonna play for the Islanders no it means he’s gonna get paid the same amount whether he’s in the AHL or the NHL so we may never see this guy play for the Islanders but uh Frederick call from is on a one-way deal worth 775k so good for these guys welcome to Long Island or I should say welcome to the Islanders because it might just be Bridgeport but we’ll have to see what happens uh but uh some more of the breaking even more breaking news another guy you I think may have thought was gonna come to the Islanders Tyler Mott is now off the board he is a Detroit Redwing so there you go so scratch another one off the list and now a word from our sponsors first is vintage I hockey.com where you can get t-shirts hoodies jerseys mugs and more featuring over 100 classic hockey uh you know the Islanders had their day or their five minutes basically of people saying like wow that’s that’s a pretty good deal then we went right back to the lunacy a lot of deals were made again early in the day Steven Stam Co Jonathan maraso Brady Shay are all Nashville Predators now uh who are some of the other ones I have my sportset list here uh who who else got uh signed the I guess uh yes Sam Reinhardt went back to Florida uh oh the Devils made a bunch of splashes they signed Brett peshy they signed uh who was the other guy Brendan Dylan they had already acquired uh Jacob markstrom already they signed a bunch of other guys that uh you know will make them better the Caps went crazy they actually acquired Jacob chran via trade and uh signed a few other guys as well oh I had a whole bit uh that I guess I didn’t want to do but uh you know people a lot of people talking about Stephen stos leaving Tampa Bay uh for Nashville after many many great years but no one is talking about another longtime member of a team that was ceremon unceremoniously dumped and had to find a new home for a new phase of his career and I’m talking of course about Zenus gurgenson one time Allstar for the Sabres is now a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning so the lightning have uh replaced Stephen stast with zus gurgenson no I’m just kidding they no I’m just kidding they obviously replaced stamp coat with Jake gensel who they acquired in a trade and uh then signed to a big contract I’m not going to go through all these you guys know the deal uh the Penguins didn’t do much which is great to see obviously we love that um what deals jumped out to you from that day uh I got my I’m a sportset here with all the signings uh you know the Predators obviously got much better the Devils got better I think the Caps it’s fair to say got a lot better um you know some other teams didn’t really do a whole heck of a lot the Penguins by the way signed both Anthony blier and uh Sebastian AO from the Islanders we found out today um but is there a deal that kind of blew you away in in a positive way let’s talk about that somebody’s like oh wow who who these guys are much much better now like it might be just the Predators and Devils but maybe it’s somebody else is some other deal catch your eye and be like damn that team is gonna be really really good now because of this I don’t think that they’ll be really really good but the the the stuff the capitals did was like minorly annoying because I was I was happy to just to um just keep to push them aside and and not have to worry them and now they are certainly still in the mix and um I thought that what they did was was pretty good and I we I think we’ll talk more about this in the draft but I I I’m so I I just hate that the that you have to exist in these three different buckets right you’re either a team that is a Stanley Cup Contender uh like the uh Panthers or Oilers or Avalanche Etc you’re retooling on the Fly which is the new buzzword or you’re in full rebuild tank tear it down to the studs mode which is really just not how reality works like this isn’t there’s in reality there’s 32 teams all of them are playing hockey um trying to win the game that they’re playing and uh yes some teams are are set up to to not be very good but for the most part the others are all trying to win the Stanley Cup and doing it in different ways because of the context that’s needed the players that they have the the the contracts they’ve signed the market that they’re in and all sorts of stuff um and I and people were have been begging for the capitals to tear it down tear it down to the studs this isn’t fair you’re just you’re beholden to Alex oetkin and it’s kind of getting embarrassing and what the capital showed was n like you can you can keep trying to win games you don’t we don’t I don’t have to follow the the rebuild blueprint that that uh the the masses on on Twitter say is the right way to do it yeah um and which rarely works so um yeah credit to them and uh be because that besides them I think the division has gotten uh so much weaker like just if you took the entire Metropolitan Division uh and looked at it as one big commodity I think you’d say this is their overall the talent level is is worse like the devils are unquestionably better than they were um a couple weeks ago the capitals are better I think The Islander are marginally better and then you have I I want to save the Rangers for because we I got we had a lot to talk about with the Rangers I also think we have a lot to talk about with the uh we have a lot to talk about with the Penguins um but when I saw that the Penguins had traded for Kevin Hayes I was like they you know they just Jeff Carter just retired and they’re just like how can we replace Jeff Carter yeah like oh we’re gonna bring in the guy who’s going to be Jeff Carter just without the cups in a couple years like Kevin too yeah like this is and this is the Kyle dubis you know Renaissance painting uh in act two of course the the uh uh the main FOC focal point of that painting is now a New York Ranger um which is incredible stuff and right but like the the penguins are not you know knock on wood they don’t look like they’ve gotten better I think they’ve gotten worse and it sucks that they took uh Anthony boiler it’s hilarious that they have Sebastian a on their team well both of those guys are going to get traded this year I’m telling you right now when the Penguins fall out of the playoffs they’re just going to get traded like just you know what it’s a shame that AO isn’t going to wear the uh the jersey that they wore when the Crosby era started like the the more glitter the glittery one um someone I can’t remember who it was but someone was said you know was Dick tarnstrom and that’s the Jersey like Sebastian AO needs to wear that jersey for the Penguins he can’t wear the the more like Pittsburgh Steeler fied right classy penguin Jersey so he’s got to wear that how great would it be for Crosby Malin and lat Tang to have just the worst seasons ever and for AO to lead that team and scoring somehow and he would truly be dick tarom two point up that would be the most amazing thing ever um the Penguins definitely they they definitely didn’t get better I don’t know if they got worse they got weirder yeah they got weirder for sure uh yeah the the Devils certainly got better I mean just getting a goalie and two really good defens plus they’re getting douge Hamilton back don’t forget who was basically HT all last year they’re going to be much better uh the Flyers by the way we should mention uh their big addition was Matt vay mitkov the Russian kid so they don’t care about anybody else they got their Russian kid that’s fine and uh the Blue Jackets signed Shawn Monahan to a five-year contract hoping that he can rekindle whatever it is he had with uh Johnny goodro back in Calgary I am skeptical but even if he does it don’t matter because they’re still not going to be that good so uh yeah I mean I think that there you know room here for the Islanders to kind of sneak in and just be like yeah we got we got a lot better because let’s be honest the hurricanes and Rangers got a little bit worse might as well talk about them so the Hurricanes lost gensel they lost peshi they lost uh who else uh Brady Shay and terot terrain who yes for a minute looked like he was gonna go to the Rangers and I was like a are you [ __ ] kidding me but then he signed up with the Blackhawks and I was like oh okay that works for me that’s fine please go back to Chicago enjoy yourself tavu that’s great so they replaced them with guys like Shane gois bear Shawn Walker who are good players for sure but like are they on the same level are they you know going to be the same thing and then you realize wait a minute their forward core got worse uh Stephan n i I don’t know if he was with Carolina but he went back uh the Devils now yeah he went back to the Devils um no uh what’s his name uh Marty NIS is still there I think he needs a new contract or whatever but uh you know then you realize wait a minute they also still didn’t get a goalie they’re still going to run run it back with Freddy Anderson and R and now you’re just like okay really they’re doing this so uh the hurricanes have suddenly become much much less scary uh do do you agree is that like put that way so this is this is one of my favorite things about the whole day was that the Hurricanes um they signed the uh shrewd perfect like value contract according to my charts contract like they they like you said Shawn Walker good player Shane gosis bear effective player in his in the right role um William carier from the Vegas golden knights really good checking line Winger they bring back Jordan martinook who’s makes sense for them obviously um and you’re like wow this you know they the hurricanes are doing what they’re doing they’re they’re signing these contracts that should return like expected value um on the deal but the the context here is like these guys aren’t as good as the players that AR aren’t there anymore like so it’s it’s great that they they added to this team like they added these bodies but the when you’re losing core pieces and even if you don’t want to include genso like terrain or Shay and peshi who been there forever and and know this system inside and out and um they didn’t address the goal tending like you said so you can you can look at those trades and say look at my my CH my chart says that these are good contracts they are uh you know Eric tulk’s a genius he’s figured out the formula to be a successful GM in in one week um so T tulsk is climbing mountains that we could never dream of and uh then you realize yeah he is but he’s also didn’t replace the players that he needed to replace like Shawn maybe you could say Shawn Walker is a good replacement for Brady Shay outside of that can’t really think of the Hurricanes um getting I I think every player that’s come in compared to the player that’s come out has been uh worse so and and like you said NIS is he’s in a contract dispute he’s going to leave in all likelihood and um this is yeah so the Hurricanes went from a team that you can almost certainly pencil in for 105 plus points to are they that much better than the Islanders right now I mean look at the forward group it’s just it’s not as as dynamic or scary as it was three three months ago snov AO Jarvis good first line like I said I don’t think NES is going to be there then it’s like Jack jury and Jordan Stall jper fos ketov ker Koken Yami like this isn’t a it’s not a scary team anymore and we we saw Brent Burns really struggle in the playoffs he was terrible um down the stretch for them and he’s still there and uh yeah it’s this isn’t this is not a scary team so I’m but got they got the praise that they always get congratulations to the Hurricanes once again for for the bar charts that they they got slung in their Direction uh for signing William carrier but uh I I don’t think that they uh they’re much better than the Islanders right now which is not something we would have said in each of like the past five seasons so oh yeah no definely screw them particularly in the last two when they met in the playoffs Tyson Joost also by the way so oh yeah t that’s tidy yeah exactly that’s definitely a tidy piece of business so yeah I think we can we can safely say that they probably knocked a few points off of their their season total but they were not the first place team in the division last year that would have been the New York Rangers who made a big splash on day one by signing uh depth centered Sam Carrick to uh a three-year contract this is of course after completely leaving Barkley goodro uh you know on the the curb so that the San Jose Sharks could come pick him up and um there was a lot of talk about them signing Patrick Kane who went back to Detroit there was a lot of sign talk of them signing Tavo teravan who went to Chicago then there was a lot of talk of how they had to move Jacob trouba in order to make some space now trouba of course is the captain he’s got the uh the sharpest elbows in the entire league as half the uh the division knows and uh he’s got a full no move clause or whatever it is and so in order to free up some cap space Chris R is going to have to do some work convincing this guy to take a deal apparently there was a deal in Detroit that somehow fell through and now what has come out is that part of the problem is that one of the reasons why Jacob trba signed in with New York in the first place was because his wife is a doctor we knew about this and her residency in New York was going to take up the majority of his his time and she’s still a resident and he’s still a ranger and he is not really inclined to go any place else because his wife and their like brand new baby who’s I not even a year old or whatever is very much you know stable here in New York and this has become a huge problem and Rangers fans are absolutely losing their minds Rangers writers are absolutely losing their minds and I am convinced now I’m I’m actually actively seriously concerned for the health and well-being of Jacob trouba’s wife because Larry Brooks has basically you know put her name out there in the new newspaper and I just hope that nothing terrible happens to her because like this is dangerous like what are we doing here like this woman has a job she’s got a life she’s got a family it’s an important job and now he’s basically putting the Target on her back so that all these like stad Rangers fans can be like who why don’t you let your husband go to Detroit so we can free up some cap space to sign somebody like okay pal whatever like I don’t to me this has become very very dangerous and very very scary uh for somebody who normally I would hate but uh it is fun to watch the whole thing burn down though so I really hope it continues like this you having too much fun with the whole the whole trouba thing it’s been it’s been a lot of fun for you it was it was hell on Earth living through this Ranger season and you know we we’ve talked about the uh The Islander season um being so strange and gut-wrenching and twisting that you expected a pay off almost you’re like okay if they’re putting me through watching Jet Greaves you know stand on his head in a must-win game for the Islanders there better be a payoff here maybe it’s they just go on a miracle run to the Stanley Cup Final or something of course it was a five game exit in the first round and watching the Rangers go to the Eastern Conference Final being convinced the entire time they’re going to win the Stanley Cup so not the payoff you were looking for but now I’m starting to think okay maybe we’re getting there maybe we’re starting to get to the payoff for having to live through that season um because this stuff has been incredible and I mean incredible in in like the I guess extraordinary is is the better word because it is just absolutely outside of the realm of the social contract that we as human beings and sports fans operate in it’s so so far gone here right and there’s a lot of stuff I want to touch on I I know this episode’s going to be long and this might be the biggest part of it but I think it’s actually important and and it’s not just talking about the Rangers I think there’s an Islanders Point here as well not just because they’re um they arrivals but in in just in terms of how these two fan bases operate and and go about their day-to-day life here which is Ranger fans are melting down right now because they just learned what H like what a no trade clause is like they they they just I think they just figure it out that what a no trade clause means like there’s a whole other league out there where no trade Clauses are just lashed out but because they don’t matter to the Rangers in their immediate plans like they just don’t they don’t pay attention to it at all like they won’t I’m sure that they didn’t know that um you know whoever Jason Zucker had a no trade clause when he signed his deal with the Minnesota Wild six years ago or something right like it just because it doesn’t matter unless it affects the Rangers so they’re they’re learning now what what happens with a no trade clause and and how these things work well because they’re used to team players waving their no trade clause to come to them so it’s never been a problem for them before it’s never been a negative it’s always been a positive whoes like yes exactly good sign your no trade Clauses cuz you can have a no movement Clause because if we want you even if you’re on the Vancouver Canucks we’re going to go get you because we’re the Rangers and now they’re seeing that the shoe can go on the other foot and I say this all nak on wood because there is of course this is the Rangers and things just always work out for them e the barklay goodro situation for example um but yeah they they watching them just have this full meltdown because something isn’t breaking their way they’re not getting their way with a player their Captain who by the way all season long how many times did we have to deal with this this team’s different team of Destiny this is the most likable Ranger team I’ve ever rooted for I love these guys I die for these guys I want I’m gonna cry when I watch these guys lift the cup and two weeks later uh their alternate Captain [ __ ] over gone thrown on waivers no Chris Jory works his way around his no trade clause trades him to a team that’s on his list because puts him on waivers so yeah this is the most likable team but not that guy right how about the captain right the captain’s a bum now get rid of this guy yeah the captain the guy who’s elbowing people you’re defending him because he’s smashing people in the head he’s clean that was through the body wasn’t that dirty and now he’s you know he’s Persona n grada in New York because he’s got a no trade clause he has a clause in his contract he’s got a legally binding contract that says I don’t have to go to these teams if you try to trade me to them and he’s he’s exercising that right yeah but because he’s a ranger and and Ranger fans don’t want him to be on the rangers they want him off the team they’re having an absolute tantrum and it got and we’re now into like the the craziest tantrum Universe I’ve ever seen in my life with the the stories about uh his wife and the reason that he wanted to stay here was because his wife is a doctor and is in uh you know her residency is here in New York and um he want he wanted to be basically give her peace of mind that she can finish her residence here residency here without having to worry that her husband is now playing for uh the Nashville Predators or something right so totally feasible feasible reason to have a no trade clause so feasible in fact Dan that ESPN made a mini documentary about it no in 2022 wow how about that I didn’t even know that was part of the yes a documentary about the Rangers can you believe documentary about the Rangers for the ESPN I can’t believe that that’s crazy yeah and they you know what you know what’s crazy they painted it as if he’s the good guy and that she’s the good the they’re the protagonists in the story but we know that they’re the antagonist they’re the bad guys they’re the black hats because who would dare who would dare do something like that right who would dare tell the Rangers to kick rocks uh when when they’re the New York Rangers so it yeah the I mean these people are fullon brainworms meltdown mode right now and and we you know when we did our Ranger pece theater um few weeks ago we were talking about how there are some some normal people or people who we thought like it’s a kind of a cool-headed ranger fan there who is having a moment and those people are out there they are losing their cool about this situation right um and it’s just unbelievable yeah to me to watch this all happen Jacob Troopa is fast becoming my favorite Ranger ever I I I reserve the right to change that at the drop of a hat but please stay there like this this is it’s incredible theater it’s scar like you said there is definitely some there is a Sinister part to this and and you hope that nobody and and I don’t think you know I think it’s going too far to say that like people are are going to do something stupid here but you really hope nobody does something stupid here right um but the fact that it ended up the story ended up in the New York Post I couldn’t when I was reading that I was watching the USA uh Uruguay game last night and I was reading that game and I had to read it in Snippets the the Larry Brooks article because I I was like this isn’t did somebody write this as a bit like I’m I’m I cannot believe that this is a thing and what’s crazier is that nobody in the like greater hockey media sphere was like oh this is this is a crazy story developing everyone kind of just like went out their day I was like are we not seeing that there’s an article in the New York Post here about like blaming Jacob trouba’s wife yeah and fans are like latching on to it about his his wife being the reason she that he’s here like he’s this is some some crazy tactic to get him to wave his no trade clause by I mean Brooks practically had her shift schedule in the article so that people could like know when she’s working at the hospital so she get over there and uh and and like visit her on her uh her rounds or something so I I just couldn’t believe it yeah I couldn’t believe it was one of like you’re rubbing your eyes she like am I reading the sentence correctly here um and so there’s but there’s so many more in consequences here so another thing about this so this is all happening right this is all unfolding during the draft it start it’s it really started to hit like the fever pitch during the draft um then it got taken to a new level of course with that article which still once again is crazy I didn’t think we were going to get any crazier than what we like the discourse during the draft and people getting pissed off that Jacob trouba wouldn’t wave his his no trade clause like once again they’re just learning how these things work the Islanders and every other team in the league have players that they would love to be able to go on to cap friendly and white out the NTC next to their name every team has them and they just deal with it they go about it because it’s part of living in this salary cap world that you guys have not really come to grips with yet like you still think you’re gonna get Bobby hoi and and all those guys right and and there was someone who was tweeting out I can’t remember who it was like they bought out their best player in history and did all this other stuff like pissed off Brian leech and like you have to be Ruth oh and that was the other thing right like when when goodro Barkley goodro was uh waved and picked up by the Sharks everyone’s like that’s the ruthlessness we need like from our GM to we got to be Cutthroat to win um and it gets it got completely taken to a new level like no no no we didn’t mean that we didn’t mean go dox’s wife at her job we meant like just just wave guys who have no trade clause babies so we can get out of their contracts like this is this is the ruthlessness don’t take it upon self to to to write something like that please um yeah I mean it’s just it’s been it’s been insane and and you juxtapose it next to the Islanders and I’m an Islander fan you’re an Islander fan people who are listening to this show are overwhelmingly Islander fans we’re the good guys in our minds I think we’re the good guys just generally so you have this situation going on the Islanders Captain is getting the King Clancy award in right in Vegas I didn’t watch a second of the award ceremony but he’s there in a three-piece suit getting award for being a good guy the rest of the team is across the ocean in Venice like grinding on one another kissing each other’s necks without shirts on to the point where somebody yeah somebody quote tweeted it like I thought this was a like a gay pride rage rager like a pride month rager but it was just hockey players like this so that’s all H like the Islanders are in this the Rangers won the president trophy they went to the Eastern Conference Final they are in the better kind of um on paper they’re in the better space right they’re they’re the better team right now on paper they just had a a mesmerizing season that came up short the Islanders had a a season from not even hell like just a different dimension but the Highlander players are all doing that and it’s so much fun to watch the ranger players are pro are watching their Captain getting doxed in the New York Post their their GM has to come out and address it there he says like oh those those conversations will be in private even though they all got leaked out like that they were trying to trade this guy it’s it’s really a crazy this is why I was saying like it it kind of comes back to the Islanders here this Rangers rant is that you look at the one team and you’re like how can you not love these guys yeah they’re like even Oliver Walsh like God I kind of want wsh Wally Wally back after watching him perform in Italy with with the cigarette smokers or whatever that band is called and then I’m like J smokers and watch I’m like I kind of want him back I want Clutterbuck back I want Matt Martin back I want all these guys back look at how much fun they’re having meanwhile the ranger Rangers are wherever they are and they’re watching their Captain get dragged through the mud after their alternate Captain got um you know loopholed out of a contract like yeah you think these guys are going to be happy with their GM yeah I don’t think so so um yeah they they go to the Eastern Conference Final and it wasn’t enough their fan base is now dragging them all through the mud they are literally harass passing them and we went to the Eastern Conference Final we’re like those I’m going to love these guys forever I’m watching I’m like look at them in in Italy it’s the best thing ever I love these guys still for for coming up short it’s you can’t the two fan bases just couldn’t be more different and yet the the reputations of the fan bases are so misaligned with what they really are like it’s right uh the uh that was a tour to force bit by the way that the whole so [ __ ] much it is but uh but you left out one one also important thing they’re All-Star goalie who dragged them to that Eastern Conference Final Gotta Get r them you got you got rid of him because he he he doesn’t have a contract extension and you know why buy Why Pay goalie $10 million although uh Sergey barovsky made that seem like a pretty good idea with the Panthers so like here you know in this continent the Rangers entire you know roster is kind of on fire right now meanwhile the Islanders are in Italy shirtless singing Mr bright side as a group yeah so uh with players who aren’t on the team anymore with a Pittsburgh with a Pittsburgh panguin right with Josh Bailey Josh Bailey Mike Riley was there having a good time Ros Johnson Johnson was there I mean it’s it it’s just this is what I was like when I was saying that duclair thing before like I think the secret might be getting out that like this is like a there’s something going on on the island like it’s a good place to come the group is great um the fans are insane but in a good way they’re not showing up to your wife’s work I mean to a couple the I I don’t know if they I mean Clutterbuck and Matt Martin might not even be Islanders at this point although they haven’t signed anywhere else so maybe they are but yeah it’s been pretty wild congratulations to the pulock by the way because that that does look like an absolutely sick wedding and that wedding looks more more wild than the Panthers uh Cup Final Cup uh celebration oh the Panthers took the the Stanley Cup into the ocean well who wow I saw you know Oliver walstrom kiss Anthony boiler on the cheek while they were at a rage with the Rave with the chain smokers from Ryan Pollock’s wedding so I mean I don’t know and it’s so great that it was poock too here’s a guy from Manitoba who’s quietest guy farm farm boy guy a guy and he’s in having a wedding in Venice but like you said it does look like the yeah the Stanley Cup Parade CRA I I’ve never seen I’ve never read an article like the one that was was in the post about um uh Jacob trouba and I’ve never seen a wedding like that it’s it it looked like one of the remember in like the 2ou like the 2010s like early 2010s I think it was called Project X that movie that just about a crazy college party like a college rager um it it really it reminded me like one of those movies where like the the party just gets completely out of control the cops show up and you know it’s it’s it would I’ve never God yeah and it was Pak and I felt a little bit bad for Anders Lee that he had to win the King Clancy award I was just going to say well he got to go to the sphere and and announce uh their draft pick so I guess it worked he got to see the last centralized draft which was you know the important thing that is true too but yeah oh my God Lee Lee at that party probably would have been the end of Italy Okay so we’ve talked a lot about the Metro very quickly I want to go through some funny things about the Atlantic we don’t need to talk about the West all that much although Vancouver I was listening to the what podcast today uh that I’ve actually kind of grown to enjoy late here in the season and uh they said what I said which was that I think the Vancouver Canucks they eventually going to hate Jake debrusk who uh signed over there for five and a half million I think over five years so uh we’ll have to see how that goes but the Atlantic was probably the place for the Absolute Comedy uh on July 1 you had the Bruins signing both Elias Lindholm and Nikita zadorov again two totally fine players who are making way too much money for way too long because the Bruins needed somebody to play center and defense and so they they needed something and so they got them and I don’t know if it’s going to work out the Bruins are almost kind of always good by accident but that’s those those two contracts immediately seem pretty regrettable the uh Leafs as we mentioned before uh signed Chris tanv they signed uh who was the other guy a couple of guys that again are are okay players there’s oh they did resign Matt Murray so there’s that too yeah they Anthony stolar and Oliver Ean lson the other two and Yanni hawp Yanni hawp so like everybody’s like oh you know this this Ekman Larson isn’t the same one who was terrible in Vancouver really because he played on a really really good team for like barely any ice time and and you know they had a lot of other defenseman kind of pulling the wagon there so we’ll see how that goes um but at the same time the best thing about the Leafs is now the discussion of a uh it’s still they keep kind of filling in around the margins and it still comes down to the big guys at the core who need to perform when it matters the most and B do we remove the ca from John Taris and give it to Austin Matthews this was point of contention on both the Nick kyos RI Kipper and Bourne the other day yeah JD bunus and James Myrtle talked about it today on theirs JD Bun’s podcast and I urge you please find the time this weekend to go listen to these because it is absolutely worth it and they are fully all on board with stripping the sea off of John Taris putting it on Austin Matthews and then maybe greasing the skids to make John think hey maybe I should wave my no trade clause so these guys can get rid of me and use my1 million for something else so that’s just just too funny real quick um the the Habs basically signed Yu I slavkovsky to a forever contract $7.6 million a year I hope he’s good because if not you just you got you know alexr Alexa lefr 2.0 there but we’ll see he was good last year so we’ll see what happens and maybe he gets better but to me the Senators and the sabes take the Comedy Award for the day because these two teams who have now missed the playoffs for a combined 20 years right it’s 13 for the Sabres and and I think seven for the Senators these two teams spent the day signing like fourth liners and trying to sell them as if they’re like the final piece of the puzzle to some kind of like grand scheme that this is it so basically the Sabres bought out Jeff Skinner who signed with Edmonton by the way and a pretty good deal for the Oilers if you ask me and replaced him with a guy you mentioned before Jason Zucker and guys like uh who else did I have on the list here Zucker was the big one that they got the big one for for a year oh uh Nicholas Obe kubel they signed uh oh Jacob Bryson resigned uh there’s a few guys that are just like dude what are you doing here what is this team doing and I saw saw some some anger from from Senators fans oh Mason jopes who was an Islanders uh you know Farm him for a bit Felix sandstrom the goalie Jack Rathbone who was a defenseman in Vancouver have you heard of any of these guys maybe maybe not are any of them that good no are there any they gonna make the Sabers make the playoffs this year after 13 years probably not like when ja when Jason Zucker is your headline so you know uh acquisition on free agency day you are in bad trouble and with the Senators the same thing David pan we just sat here and said you were like well who do you want who do you not want to sign I’m like please don’t sign David pan David pan gets a two-year contract from from the Senators what is David pan doing there what are you gonna do with this guy now we should talk about the fact that they did trade Matthew Joseph today to the blues and that freed up a lot of cap space for them to sign Shane Pinto to a two-year contract so if you were thinking Shane Pinto is gonna get traded to the Islanders sorry but he’s going to stay in Ottawa for two years but still you know Pino’s a good player and everything but like come on he was on the team last year and they didn’t go to the playoffs to me the these two teams have whatever the plot is these guys haven’t even come close to whatever it is they they haven’t been following it for a long long long time I don’t know what they’re doing if either of them even comes even within spitting distance of the playoffs I will be shocked because to me they just basically painted over two two of the worst rosters in the league that are going to be pretty bad again so I I just was watching them sign guys and being like why why why are you doing any of this what are you doing put the pen down dude come on what are you doing yeah I mean and and I think you could throw the Red Wings in oh yeah oh another Point made by what chaos how about this for the Red Wings gending battery this coming year they have villy huso who they already had they have Alex lion who they already had and then they went out and signed Cam talbet and Jack and Jack Campbell yeah they lost ryer but they signed Jack Campbell so lion husso talbet Campbell that’s your goalies maybe one of them works out I don’t know eyes are planed in in full effect here it’s yeah and and it’s so frustrating because we want to see the Leafs not make the playoffs so we need one of these teams to step up and they keep doing stuff like this I know uh the I would say that Oscar for or the free agency frenzy Oscar for the best comedy was the Zucker tra sign has to be has to be to to buy out Jeff Zucker and yes Jeff Skinner and sign Jason Zucker immediately use all the money that you save from this Jeff Skinner pyou to sign Jason Zucker to a $5 million contract he must have just been like wait a minute they’re gonna give me $5 million for what isn’t this team trying to make the playoffs I would have signed me to if I was in their situation but now now I know where I got James Rymer from he signed with with Buffalo so yes yes why why are you here oh Sam laferty too forgot Sam laferty oh right yeah right so that’s what they did they they signed him and and Zucker $7 million and that is to to a te basically what they saved from buying out Jeff Skinner this uh for the season go to Sam laery and jayon Zucker it’s yeah it’s the Silver Lining here is at least it shut everyone up so no one’s saying like oh boy this is finally the year here they come the drought is going to be over and I get both of these teams that the Sabers and Senators have these really you know strong young Cor Etc but um it doesn’t matter it just it’s it’s been proven over and over again it really doesn’t matter and the more people predict change in the NHL the more things just stay the same it’s case in point staying in the Atlantic and we got like you we started this conversation we’ll bring it back to the Leafs the second that they went down 3-1 to the Boston Bruins before they were even eliminated from the playoffs this the entire fan base and when you say the entire fan base that also includes the media because the Leafs media of course is part of the the fan base they are just the fan base with the microphone they all said that’s it this is it you cannot I really mean it this time not like the time that I said it after they lost to the Panthers in five games or in the first round to the lightning the year before that or in the first round to the Blue Jackets or the first round to the Canadians or the Bruins the other time I actually mean it you can’t win win like this one of these guys has got to go there’s no excuse for them to come back in September with a team that still has Austin Matthews William neander John tarz and Mitch Marner on it and you can’t trade Austin and you can’t trade Willie you probably can’t trade tarz so it’s gonna be Mitch they have to do it there’s no excuse they just need to get it done and they will there’s no way that they can come back in September with these guys it is July 2nd and they’re all changing the narrative from oh God they’re they’re bringing them back so might as well not even talk like that anymore to should is the big change just gonna be taking the sea off of John tarz you think that’s a big enough is that a bit does that still count as running it back they got Chris tanv and uh Oliver ecin Larson so they yeah oh they resigned Max do too and they got a new coach yes I’m I’m it’s really I I I think about doing this all time and I realize it’s just such a terrible way to waste time in your life like you only have so much time on this planet and I can’t go back to every leaf podcast in the three or four days post playoff ex uh um elimination and just clip all the guys saying that there is a zero percent chance that these guys will all come back because they say it every year every year they say it that there’s no way that they can just run it back with the same core and yet that’s just what’s going to happen because the more you expect change in the NHL the less change actually happen so you can be you know think the senators or the sabes or the Red Wings are going to gate crash in the Atlantic but they’re just not it’s just not how it works especially if they’re bringing Jason Zucker right in like it’s it’s it’s so crazy and yet the Islanders of the team that gets you know all this flak for the way that they’re run and giving Pier angal this contract or Scott Mayfield like man the Islanders have made the playoffs every year but one since L Laro has been here every year but one they’ve been to two Eastern Conference Final they swept the Penguins they swept the Penguins back when the Penguins were still good like they they took s Ryan Pollock and Adam pelic picked up Sydney Crosby and they put him in his their pocket for a four games tom kunak scored a goal that was disallowed like this this team was they they beat the [ __ ] out of that the Penguins they beat the [ __ ] out of the Penguins again they beat the [ __ ] out of the Bruins like they they ran through the bubble like this they have had all this success and yet they’re the team that has constantly said what are they doing right why aren’t they just you know tearing it down and rebuilding they can’t win with this roster and yet the sabes and the Senators the Red Wings even like the Leafs the Leafs haven’t they the leavs get praised like they’re this Behemoth compared to the Islanders this Juggernaut and they’ve won one playoff series yeah since 2004 John tarz has won one playoff series since leaving the Islanders right and yet these These are the teams that get praised that the team that uh the team where who’s trying to chase their Captain out of town after making it after winning a president trophy going to the Eastern Conference Final getting within two games of of a Stanley Cup Final like these are the teams that you want to be these are the these are the uh the the exemplary franchises you want to be one of these you want to run your your team like the Rangers or you want to rebuild like the Sabers and get as much young talent and make sure you lock them up yeah no I’ll just keep doing what the Islanders are doing and this I think this is totally fine like yeah because like as you move forward you can make changes we’ll talk about the draft like on the other side of the break you can just knock stuff out of the park as it comes like you can it you’re not behold it’s not like Andrew Lee is just going to be playing for the Islanders until 29 right like things are going to change eventually right uh so I it’s it blows my mind with the way that every this league is covered the league just doesn’t doesn’t change at all and yet the team that constantly gets painted as the the one that’s like holding it all back or the team that’s going backwards as the Islanders who as I said have made the playoffs uh every year but one since 2018 well that’s that’s a perfect segue for me to to talk about the TSN Trade Center experience that I had on Monday which was awful and I say this to you as my friend and I say this to our listeners as my friends I am making this vow right here and now this was the last time I will ever watch tsn’s Trade Center on free agency day I will just get my free agency news from Twitter or just read about it at the end of the day I don’t care this was as painful as it’s ever been but maybe even a little bit more you had two hours two and a half hours of like crazy trades getting broken and and I thought they were doing a pretty good job they were bringing them up and talking about these trades and well not trades and signings and all this stuff happening stamp codes and blah blah blah and then like you said they had this stuff set up and they had to do it and so we got bits on who’s going to play for Team Canada and Team USA at the four nations face off off uh what team is Leon dry cido going to sign with next year done through Plinko so they had like a Plinko board and they were dropping this like coin down and whatever cupet landed in was where dry cida was going to sign they talked about all this stuff and then when somebody did sign somewhere they would talk about them as if they were first of all again they only covered the really the seven Canadian teams and the Predators that was really it nobody else has any has any bearing on anything and like when you devote as as much time as they did to the Senators signing guys like David pan and Michael amario and Noah Gregor you it it started to make me think something that you’ve brought up which is like TV being made for not audiences but other TV producers and it suddenly occurred to me that this program this sixh hourong annual program of what is supposed to be the free agency you know frenzy and the way to keep up with it and watch all the deals go down as they go down is basically just made for the people who are on the show they want to sit there and argue about where Michael amadio and Noah Gregor fit into the senator lineup that’s not going to come anywhere near the playoffs these are the guys who want to argue and Brian Hayes who is a I guess a host at TSN please this man needs a vacation more than I think anybody else in Canadian hockey media this guy was angry angry he was just yelling and screaming about who was going to be on Team Canada and why they were going to beat Team USA and and why you know these Leaf signings were not going to be good and why this that I’m like bro will you calm down please and then they throw it to the goalies who talk about the goalies even when the goalies aren’t getting signed and it’s just like why are we they then they have the trade Breakers and at the table Bob MacKenzie’s there it’s always great to see Bob they give him like five minutes to you know total for six hours he doesn’t really say anything again the Islanders didn’t and duclair weren’t mentioned at all except for a brief moment by gour Miller who said uh you know just like the Islanders signing duclair okay James back to you that was that was the moment that it was that that was mentioned and I don’t say that because they I need these guys to mention this or talk about this because let’s be honest they don’t know anything about the Islanders and they don’t give a [ __ ] about them signing Anthony duclair but the point is that I’m watching this because I want these people who are ly in the no to explain and and analyze these deals as they’re being made in real time not talk about where Leon dry cdle is gonna sign in a year I don’t care about that and I don’t know anybody that does if you’re an Oilers fan you don’t want to hear about this if you’re a Flames fan you definitely don’t want to hear about this like you know and I just I don’t get it that that’s the thing that got me it’s like okay we make a joke about how they talk about the Leafs all the time but even if you’re a Leafs fan how much Chris tanv talk can you stand like I don’t understand like and maybe you want to hear about somebody who’s just signed with the Canucks or the Flames or whatever so I can’t do it anymore I don’t know why I ever did it in the first place it seems like almost like you’re kind of getting something getting away with something I guess by watching this sort of peek into a you know another dimension or something like that but I can’t do it anymore this is it’s not it’s it’s not television made for me and it doesn’t have to be I’m not saying TV needs to be made for me there’s a lot of TV shows that I feel like are made for me this is not one of them and I don’t need to watch it anymore anym and I can’t take it anymore so uh you know I just I don’t know if you watched it at all or whatever but it just you know I turned it off an hour early because I’m like what am I still watching this for I don’t this is just yeah I was turning it off coming back to it and and I was like this is so bad and um yeah the first kind of 10 minutes I had to like pay actually pay attention to it right uh because of work or just getting Isa ready was uh they were doing something called tender yes yeah tender which is a apply on Words of Tinder yeah where the go goalie panel they have a goalie panel right um with uh noodles with clennon Maron Maron and Kevin weeks three Islanders yeah Islanders I never thought about that yeah yeah oh God I would love to get their combined games win loss record with the Islanders um yeah they’re they’re playing tender and I’m like what are they doing they’re just you know they’re swiping guys right and then I started to put it together oh those are all Canadian goalies they were picking their starting goalie for the uh the flash faceof whatever it’s called on uh coming our way the season that me you and I are just going to [ __ ] about the entire season right uh with h the little four team tournament that they’re doing for no reason whatsoever um just to take a break for two weeks in the schedule and and probably get an Islander or two hurt uh this is this is going to be keep me up at night starting pretty soon um and I I I always think this whenever I watch Trade Center or free age of frenzy and uh that the reason I watch it still is BEC it’s Nostalgia like back in when when the Islanders traded for Ryan Smith one of my favorite days ever as a fan I was watching playing hookie and I was watching on my computer like my family computer an old family computer in like the Attic So my mom wouldn’t know that I was faking sick like I was like in surrounded by boxes in like this Loft in my old house like watching in the dark and um what back then Trade Center and this and the July 1st special were really special because we didn’t get any hockey coverage in the states so once a year like you could find a stream for TSN yeah and you could watch these shows and there was no Twitter back then either so the only way you could find out that mlav shatan signed with the Islanders was by watching uh these shows and and when you’re watching it in real time I mean it it sucks to say it cuz the toothpaste is out of the the the tooth here and you can’t put it back in with with Twitter but finding out the Islanders like signed Brad luo on TSN on a computer uh it was really exciting when you just read about it on Twitter it’s like a not that exciting and then after you read about it on Twitter you hear James dthy like say oh all right over to the uh insiders now like Chris Johnson is reporting that the Islanders have signed Brad Luc to a three-year deal like it’s just it’s lost it’s luster but I watch it just because of that nostalgia factor of back when you had to basically if you felt like you were going over Enemy Lines like you were going like a you were like a Frontiersman going into the the unknown trying to find hockey coverage right it was a new world you’re like poking around World different commercials and stuff like that like yes yeah yeah yeah and that’s why we watch it still and like it’s it’s just Nostalgia and it’s it’s definitely not good for anybody that we still watch it I don’t need to hear Craig Button and Mike Johnson argue about uh you know Joseph woles should should he play 38 games or 44 games for the Leafs the season so but like terrible it was terrible and I just don’t know who it’s for like who who is all this for I mean Leafs fans get a lot of that it would be great to ask these guys like if you got everybody who just appeared on that show all 15 uh skaters and three goal tenders on the goalie panel and you said I want you guys to write down what who you think this show is for like it can be some as specific as my grandma or as vague as hockey fans like just write it down because I think all of them would come up with a different answer which tells you that the show is for for nobody in particular it’s terrible they’re so focused I I feel like every year they they are so worried that nothing’s gon to happen that they come up with these bits to kill time and then even when stuff does happen they’re so committed to doing these bits because they’ve spent money and time deciding on them and and designing them that they do them anyway and that’s exactly what happened this year like over a billion dollars in contracts were signed on day one you guys had all kinds of stuff to talk about and you’re playing Plinko about Leon drle what are you doing I don’t understand it makes no sense and yeah okay they have guys come on and talk with them on Zoom which is never not awkward but at least it’s something right like that at least I can buy okay this is dumb but at least I get it yeah yeah the annual cam Janson phone call it was fun it was it was fun right and you were like kind of a little ticked you’re like oh God like is Cam Jansen G to be on the phone when is this gonna right yeah prevent me from knowing that Tomas sovi just got traded like get back to the trade Breakers yeah yeah I just it’s it’s for nobody and I’m so I’m still I’m mad at myself for watching it and I said not again I’m not doing it again I’ll just wait and I’ll see what happens may I might not be on Twitter or whatever at that time but I’m gonna I’ll find out later if I have to just you know that that’s it so so there you go okay we’re GNA take one so that is your free agian frenzy on our end we obviously missed a lot of guys the Kings made a couple of bad signings of Joel Edmonson and uh who was the other guy that Rob Blake is a he’s a shark is he he’s a shark Pat is a is a uh can’t remember what they stos stos is calming the water yeah right um all these amazing uh Steve eer nothing ever gets out from Steve Eiserman and then every deal is tweeted Out hours before it happens the Patrick Kane situation was great and then uh yeah I love how Tyler bruzi is also a perfect fit for half a dozen teams and he signs with Chicago which basically to and Tyler tley signs with San Jose which basically to me says those guys were like I don’t care give me the puck give me my money and I don’t give a [ __ ] like okay man go ahead be fine and and Max DOI made H made the funniest most original yeah uh Twitter video about coming back to the map beliefs yeah I can’t believe nobody’s ever done that before oh no wait I’m sorry it’s the same exact video that Andrew Lee used when he’s resigned with the Islanders six years ago six years ago yeah um yeah that was great um but yeah I mean it was great the waters are calm Everybody Hates Chris jury we didn’t even mention that all his players everybody all the players hate Chris jury but awesome on the outside he’s ruthless and just wants to win and he’s very aggressive um but we did forget also forget to mention that kokako doesn’t want to be there either like the Rangers are slowly getting into uh some some hilarious water I see m Molly Walker just wrote an article about what you can maybe make an argument they’re not in the best shape right now maybe if as long as the the owner isn’t reading this maybe and uh yeah and well at least at least they know that as long as their goalie continues to be literally superhuman they’ll be fine so and I’m sure oh this will all work out for them that’s absolutely that’s why I’m trying to just like get it all out as before I before Jacob trouba gets get you know gets traded to uh he gets traded to to Utah for like a first round pick and and they’re best player because you know the Ryan Smith is just yeah you know he’s he’s he wants to get his name out there he’s not a patient man right so they just acquired uh Mel cev which was a big deal well that’s a perfect segue again you’re you’re racking them up today you’re perfect segue again for our final break uh we’re going to talk about the draft this episode is being a little bit formatted a a little bit differently today because had a couple of technical problems here but let’s talk about the draft real quick uh which happened last week uh Friday and Saturday and uh again you know I don’t much like free agency I don’t know if people had high expectations for the Islanders they went in with one first round pick two second round picks uh and then a fourth I think six fifth and sixth if and seventh if I’m not mistaken uh and uh walked out with some pretty High Praise uh we were wondering if they were going to trade that first round pick it was number 20 they had made the deal with Blackhawks to move down uh but then something weird happened um you know I’m not gonna you guys listen to the show I’m not going to pretend like we’re like draft Nicks or Prospect perverts or any of these people we don’t know who these guys are until they’re done but if you’ve read an article about this draft even casually or by accident you’ve probably seen the name cole Eiserman pop up he does not spell like Steve Eiserman it’s with an e and he was projected to be very high pick at some points uh earlier last year but come Friday picks are being made some kind of out of left field a little bit some guys making reaches Anaheim Ducks I’m looking at you and uh suddenly it gets to the Islanders and Cole Eiserman is still on the board thanks to the Vegas golden knights who took uh that guy Trevor Connelly who I definitely didn’t want the Islanders to take and all of a sudden it seemed as if a top prospect was about to fall into the Islanders laps and by God he did they walked up to the podium Anders Lee looking very handsome looking very uh cool in his uh shirt there a day after picking up his King Clancy trophy announces that they were taking Cole Eiserman from the US national development program this is kind of a huge deal again Eiserman in some places had him some places had him predicted as being maybe top five or top seven maybe in the top 10 altogether um and uh nobody thought he was gonna fall here and they did now uh he it is nice to see your team like on the Winner’s side of these articles every once in a while like I don’t not saying that Cole Eisman is going to be a superstar but it’s nice when your team is on the Winner’s side of the draft winners and losers articles uh Cory prman gave the Islanders a b more on him in a second kind of compared uh compared iserman to Owen tippet who’s been very good for the Flyers lately sportset had them as a winner Scott wheeler had them as a winner uh you know there’s some comparables to Oliver walstrom both coming out of the New England area both being in the US National development program but like Eiserman has scored at a rate much much much much much higher than walstrom has then Keith R Bell’s had then guys like Patrick Kane and Cole Coffield and other guys who played for that program so this is again you can quibble about it you can say it’s not what they need or they should have traded it or whatever this Islanders Prospect pool is now better because Cole Eiserman is in it he’s going to beu next year so you’re not going to see him play for the Islanders at least not this year maybe maybe next year when he comes to Bridgeport but this was a huge thing for me and and again I’m not a big draft guy but when this happened I started getting excited and then their other picks uh turned out to be pretty pretty good and pretty well received too Jesse poken in a defenseman was taken in the second round uh he’s got us a lot of upside and and a lot of people were talking about how well he looks and then they took a couple of goalies who looked pretty good and uh they finished with a guy named Xavier something or other uh who is going to Harvard which is always nice I suppose so uh again excuse me Xavier vilu a lot of x’s in this gentleman’s name so you know again oh and K Kareem Bednar is the other guy also out of the US development program also going to be you next year uh sneaky third round pick uh might no this was the other second round pick that they used sorry had uh 65 points in 61 games for the development program last year so again we’re not going to pretend to be draft guys here but when you see name like this like Cole Eisman that you saw on draft boards higher up fall to the Islanders uh it’s exciting when you see them being people saying like hey you know what good for Lou they made a lot of good picks here that’s good to see I saw him also being compared to Mike Bossy who also fell to the Islanders when people didn’t draft him and I will just say that if Cole eisman’s NHL career can see him fall somewhere between Oliver walstrom and Mike bossy I think the Islanders will have done pretty well for themselves he he doesn’t necessarily need to score 573 career goals but he should probably show up more than once a year unlike Oliver Walford so uh you’re also not a big draft guy but what did you make out of this uh this year’s draft um Hall I think uh a lot of people liked yeah and you know to to kind of build on the point I was making before is that you don’t need to come out and say we’re rebuilding or we’re tearing this thing down to the studs and trying you know get looking 5 years down the road um you don’t need to say those things before you just have a good draft right like you can just you can just go about living your life as an NHL team and then when the draft comes make good picks and sometimes it happens like the Islanders the reason the Islanders haven’t had a draft like this in in a while is because they haven’t had any they haven’t had any picks like they haven’t picked in the first round since 2019 like they right I’m pretty sure they’ve had 20 under 20 total picks um since then if I’m not mistaken if you think back to 2018 the Islanders were lauded for the way that they handled that draft they had a really good draft in 2015 with barzel like this is a team that was drafting really really well until they started to Win Hockey games to win playoff rounds and trading first round picks for Kyle pal Mar and JG Paso and Alex Romanov like they they they did what you’re supposed to do like they you’re you’re supposed to try to win and if you trade if you’re trading draft picks usually that means you’re trying to win and you you are in contention um so then they go into a draft where everyone’s like the Islanders need to they’re kind of stuck in between two two mins here I thought that the Islanders would end up trading at least one of their second round picks I mean we all kind of did yeah I mean but they didn’t they didn’t they they made these picks all of a sudden oh things are looking better for the Islanders Prospect pool because they got they got Cole Eiserman and uh they got uh Camille benar and Jesse pinin and oh man Isaiah George is coming up and Alex jeffre looks like he could maybe be an NHL player so could Matt maio and will de can is going to continue to develop and uh Danny Nelson uh who is at Notre Dame I believe yeah like the Islanders all of a sudden like yeah they didn’t they didn’t have to tear anything down to the studs like I don’t I this is we’ve been saying this for so long you don’t have to do that like you don’t have to just completely blow things up just because you had a bad season or an underwhelming couple Seasons because then the draft comes and you can just draft players right and they can work out or they don’t we don’t know that Cole Eiserman is going to work out he could he could he was compared to kefir Bellow and Oliver walstrom and so he could end up like kefir Bellow or walstrom like we don’t know that and uh maybe the guy they get in like the seventh round is the best player in the draft like Adam pelic was when when the Islanders took him what in the third round in that draft where they took all defenseman and was a second round was sixth round pick sorry sixth round pi right you just don’t we don’t know like but what they did was they gave themselves the best chance to have a successful draft it seems like yeah none of us know anything about these guys uh at all but it w like you said it was nice to see that most of the people who are experts in this field which is one of the most annoying Fields you can be an expert in let me tell you it is tough to listen to some of these folks well all right so here’s my problem with these guys because I’ve been sitting on this now for four days right so I’m gonna pick on Corey prman because he seems like a nice guy he certainly works very hard he writes a lot of stuff all year but this kind of stuff drives me absolutely Bonkers so I’m reading his like grades thing and out of the 32 teams in the NHL I’m pretty sure 28 of them got a B or B minus and or B+ right now here’s the thing maybe it’s just because I’m old and I’m thinking about things in a different way these days but like we are talking about a human being right these guys the the Islanders and all these other teams have selected a live living walking talking thinking human being to join their organization full of other human beings right for the next what five seven maybe 10 years of this guy’s life Cole Eiserman is 17 years old he’s the oldest guy that got picked is what 21 maybe 20 right and these guys are going to be here for a long long time there are an infinite number of possible outcomes for this these guys careers you know you take however many players were drafted however many teams however many picks this is like Avengers Infinity War 14,63 possible outcomes right anything can happen to any one of these guys they could be bums and and busts or they could be Hall of Famers in that context on that timeline in the infinite realm of possibilities for what these guys could and could not be what the hell is the difference between a b and a B minus how does how do we relate what is a b and a b are people reading this being like Oh man the Islanders got a B but the Flyers got a B minus boy Philly must really be kicking themselves no they’re not they’re not kicking themselves they like their guys right whoever who cares where they took whatever does it make I just I can’t get over the fact that everyone oh yeah they got a B okay oh they got a B minus why how can you possibly evaluate this on a level that granular we’re talking about a human being this is this man the next seven years of this guy’s life are going to be with the Islanders regardless of what happens B minus B what okay great B B+ and then the funny thing is like the the sharks of course got an A+ because they took mlin celebrini who cares who the other guys who they took how can anybody else get an A if they don’t have the first overall pick like I don’t understand like he’s the only guy worth an a like I I just I don’t know and I think the worst team got a D or maybe maybe a c Min or something like I just it’s it’s so comical that it’s so granular but what they’re evaluating is so immense that I just was like I can’t this is the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen now again it’s nice that when they’re on the Winner’s side of things and basically what it means it’s like not even that like oh this guy’s gonna be good because again we don’t know but it’s sort of like confirmation like oh okay somebody else sees this guy as being pretty good so when he’s eventually not good at least I’m not the only one who thought he was good right so that that’s my whole take on it I just I couldn’t believe I’m like everybody got to b b or B minus what the hell what are we talking about I don’t understand and and it but it causes fans to like right react yeah like I how many times do you see these these cards go around for these at drafts and be like oh the Islanders got to steal here because you know this this draft modeler put up a card and you’re like dude I don’t know what any of this means all I know is that guy is 17 years old he’s going going to Boston College next year right who knows because he’s he’s I remember when I was 17 I know uh and I remember when I went to college and I was definitely there was a lot of life I had to learn like you know like it’s who knows like these this is it’s it’s crazy it’s CRA and when you were 17 nobody was trying to sign you to a three-year $900,000 a year contract to play professional hot yeah Leah Leah hexo wasn’t putting a microphone in my can somebody and I this is so mean but it’s been a long episode and we’re almost done here I can somebody please tell Leo hexall that she looks like a Vulcan from Star Trek with this haircut I’m really I feel I’m so bad I’m sure she’s so lovely I’m I’m sure she’s very very nice and I’m not even saying it looks bad I’m just saying that she looks like Kirsty Ali from Star Trek 2 like I just can’t even we complained about the the T the TSN broadcast but the Draft broadcast was not as not not any better oh my God I mean every player that was drafted was either Mar they just kept rotating between this guy’s got some Mario Lemieux to him yep or you know bra oh bred Point like Kevin weeks and johnross at a at a something like the draft when you’re the professional like broadcaster you you shouldn’t react like when a when a team makes a pick because they’re there to make picks so it’s not like oh the Anaheim Ducks are on the clock let’s see if they go up there and make a pick or if they’ll just skip them like no they’re going to go make a pick or they’ll trade it another team will make a pick you don’t need to react like you’re eight-year-old and uh you know you’re at the Royal Rumble like we know how this works we’ve been all been to we’ve all watched these drafts for for years now like this team goes and the next team goes and and every pick is the perfect pick for that team I like where he fits in this in this group bchi I love that that they need defense this guy’s got a long wing fan he’s mean this is exactly what this team needs this dude may never play for this team he may never play for this team make the league the CH the odds are against him that’s exactly if I was on the draft i” just be like oh man Minnesota Wild just drafted this defenseman out of Medicine Hat and he’s probably not going to play in the NHL none of us are going to remember this name face day or anything it’s just uh let’s move on to the next team but these guys are out of their seat they’re dancing the my favorite part though and I I made sure to jot this down um because I didn’t want to forget about it in case we we forgot you know with the all the other stuff that’s happened since the draft which feels very long ago um when the Islanders were up uh it was the the knights drafted um the guy who who did the Nazi stuff yeah yeah thank you Knights yes thank you Knights for that and thank you to Megan CH who said it was the steel of the draft steel of the draft you know we had stuff but this guy can really fit in well with the night really just a just a casual swas sticker this kid has played for 15 teams across the country he keeps he keeps making you know people uncomfortable wherever he goes doing God knows what but yeah the knights walk away with and you know the knights they’ll do anything to win yeah it’s just the way he’s talking about and then the Segway was oh co iserman still there for the Islanders Mega chica yeah but is he a New York Islander kind player I mean they’re still trying to win games one nothing I got a text from Matthew Strauss as soon as someone said that I would kill to win a game one- nothing BCI like what what are what world are they living in and then they draft Eiserman and you know it’s like universally lauded or whatever and they just kind of move on with the the jokes like oh I guess Islander hockey isn’t you know what it used to be no this guy’s not gonna play next year he’s gonna play for a team that isn’t the New York he’s going to play for the Boston College Eagles he’s not going to play for the New York Islanders well be be Terriers but it yeah and and uh but also not for nothing the Islanders haven’t played one nothing hockey for two [ __ ] Seasons exactly like what a point obviously and and uh yeah so that it I mean you had to they had to get the Jabs in they had to get the the one in and if I had to hear one more time about how stunning the sphere is yes and how there was a great I can’t remember who it was now but one of the Insiders is like the NBA and NFL are shaking in their boots cuz the NHL got to the sphere first I’m like oh yeah oh yeah yeah Roger gell is up in arms he’s just called an emergency meeting at the white house because the NHL beat the NFL to the sphere do you know how many people are watching this on a Friday night that you don’t like directly know in your life like if you if if you just whoever it was that tweeted that out Dave pagota or something if you were in a room with everybody you knew that you were that you weren’t like directly working with yeah maybe 20% of them are watching the NHL draft right now like nobody’s watching this I don’t know what I don’t know how to put it that way like there’s I think they said 500,000 people watched it on ESPN or something I mean if you were at home and put it on somebody’ be like what the hell are we watching what is this and you’d be like oh it’s the NHL draft what em Emily was like what are you watching I like I’m watching the draft she’s like well why does it matter like I was like well the Islanders are going to be up soon yeah she said well what pick do they have 20 and we were up to like four yeah and that’s what that’s what happened to me too I’m like this is oh man this is going to go on forever she goes Andia was like what why what’s taking so long I’m like I don’t know it’s just this is this has been going on for an hour and a half and they a pick six the Islanders don’t pick until 20 oh my God yeah that’s what she Emily’s like well how long do you have to pick and I said like nominally three minutes I think but nobody ever sticks to that they have to do like interviews and stuff so it’s much worse than that and she’s like oh all right this this looks like Terri the worst thing ever and then as soon as I said that like there was like some crazy graphic or something it might have been when the um maybe like the 11th pick somebody traded a pick down and like it was like trade alert thing and I was like oh there’s a trade she’s like who cares aren’t they all trades I’m like I guess in one way or another sort of like they’re just getting yeah players here and it was just it’s when you say it out loud and you’re like explaining to someone yeah exactly you’re like this is this is terrible I don’t I don’t want to be watching it I don’t want to I don’t want to be watching this at all I’d much rather be a a stronger person that I could say yeah I don’t want to I I know that there nothing’s going to happen here that’s going to excite me besides maybe whatever the Islanders do and I I should go do something more constructive with my time but I can’t because I am you know a tragic I’m addicted to this and yeah unfortunately um as all the Insiders predicted this was going to be a draft that was hopping with movement a lot of trade man the sabes are looking to trade there they want a pro they want to turn their seventh overall pick done drafting they’re they’re in win now mode they’re done drafting they’re going to trade they’re looking to get in a an NHL body commensurate with the value of their pick they’re definitely going to trade out of the top 10 the Senators too are also looking to trade down so they can get a pro in there and don’t be surprised if the Columbus Blue Jackets move their number four four overall pick yeah none of it happens every single this is what I was talking about before right the more that all these stuff this stuff is predicted and there’s going to be some crazy stuff going on the less it happens like it’s it’s so sad that we buy into this stuff I know I know it was this year in particular was really every every trade was just for more picks and then they just sat there and waited for something to happen and then they made their pick and I’m pretty sure Lou Laro made the last trade on the draft floor the round one the last trade in round one for an actual NHL player pretty short probably Prett yeah might have been uh but yeah so I mean again the product the the viewing the viewing aspect was terrible uh but the Islanders made out pretty well and I guess we could all be happy about that we don’t have to watch it again next year maybe they’ll go decentralized maybe they’ll go back to the sphere and and just do it again just do it there every year so these guys can get really stick it to the NFL yeah go back again if the NFL or NBA ever has a draft at the the sphere it will be like the NHL was never there like they will completely erase this this event from Human memory uh but yeah we’ll have to see so all right well it’s been a week for the Islanders it might not even be over I mean again maybe L we still have to figure out what’s going on with wallstrom and Clutterbuck and Mar yeah right uh there’s a Nelson there’s a there’s a lot of guys that we haven’t heard from uh so we’ll have to see uh that are still out there and uh I don’t know maybe the Islanders make some more moves they’re going to need to make a trade I think at some point if they want to do something but uh we’ll we don’t know and and if something does H oh sorry we forgot the most important thing that happened to the Islanders this week Doug Huda will no longer be the Islanders defensive coach Lou reaching into his Devil’s past bringing in Tommy Tommy Abaline Tommy Aline was a good player for the Devils defens defenseman I was another situation where I thought someone was pulling a joke on me I’m like this is so funny like I was like you should have just put s Sarge breeland’s picture in there like Grant Marshall if soon it’s just going to be like you know how on Islanders decom they do like the the page where you go to Team and then the drop down it’s like front office it’s just going to be the the 2003 devil Stanley Cup picture like Tommy Abaline I was like did he retire a lot longer ago than I thought or is he just really old and sure enough he he retired in 056 was his last season so yeah he’s been gone a long long time uh and uh but uh yeah he’s yeah he’s the team’s new defensive coach uh goodbye Doug Huda thanks for everything uh including the League’s worst penalty kill last year so and uh you know I got to say um I know it’s a few days old it’s gonna be a week old probably by the time people hear this but uh if you get a chance and you haven’t yet go listen to Lou’s kind of uh press thing after the draft um he talks about Huda not coming back uh mlan is coming in he couldn’t announce Abaline at the time obviously it was before free agency but he uh it was really interesting he said some interesting things he was more more than anything he was in really good spirits and was very very happy I think with how the draft turned out and was joking with Andrew Gross about the line about you know it’s the now Infamous line that about Bo Horvat signing it was too long and for too much money and Lou was like you like that line didn’t you and Andrew’s like yes I did and he was like I got reprimanded for that ha and they laughed about it so I want to know who reprimanded L lamell that was Terri I mean unless he meant like online but that’s the funniest line anybody said in a long time maybe Lou has one of these uh Islander burners proba this the the foru page is just in my foru page is just an absolute tire fire now because of the amount of Rangers content that I’ve been ingesting obviously the leaf stuff and like that Twitter Bots are like I don’t this guy roots for the maple e and he roots for the Rangers and he roots for the Islanders I’m pretty sure um God yeah it’s it’s it’s crazy to see how many people just popped up with and there’s like 18 different accounts for each team now that just listen a podcast and TW out what Frank Cali or Elli Freeman say and then they and then there’s another 18 that just pass off what they say as their own rumor Source like it’s it’s a it’s the wild west out there um and in a completely botched uh segue I’m look now looking at the 2005 six Devils uh roster because uh of what you said about Tommy abene I can’t believe this is how long he retired too but he was on that team with uh Victor klof wow Jason Jason weer wow um Brad lwit Zack paresi a lot of a lot of former Islanders here Islander Legend Scott clemenson who of course let in the goal those goals in the that shootout so yeah this was uh this was quite the roster 506 that’s crazy so there’s a lot of there’s a lot of players that that luk can can bring aboard that uh I mean Jason weer would be just what a joy to have him on the GI they need GI yeah that’s that’s Brian by the way not uh not uh what was it stepen the TI they need to bring John Madden in that would be that wouldn’t be too bad uh but there you go um no what I was going to say was uh one thing I forgot was I was listening to uh the Jeff marrick show but in one of the days it wasn’t hosted by Jeff marrick it was that guy Matt maresi he was talking to Elliot Freedman and they were talking about Barry trotz and this was before all the the free agency stuff and good for Barry he’s he’s really reeling it in and exulting in the uh the Praises of people for signing a bunch of guys and really transforming the Predators over the last couple days but maresi was like you know I didn’t know that Barry trotz was this like very uh funny engaging kind of speaker here and uh Elliott was like yeah I love talking to Barry trots and I was sitting at I was working and I was sitting in front of my computer and I was literally yelling into the computer you didn’t know because you weren’t paying attention you duns that’s why you didn’t know like this guy because it’s because we didn’t know either before Barry got here right we didn’t know he was this funny and and was a philosopher and stuff like that and we found out over the course of four years that this guy’s a font of of wonderful advice and and you know great kind of uh humanity and funny funny lines and and you know very sharp mind and now people are hearing this for the first time and being shocked that you know the bald guy who loved to win games 21 might not be the worst thing that ever happened to you know the sport of hockey so I’m just I was like stunned once again the uh the Islanders tenure of a of a guy is completely erased uh because uh you know they they weren’t paying attention so there you go okay I think that was the last thing I wanted to talk about uh we are going to sign off here for a little while we are GNA be back with uh mailbags and and Country Club atmospheres over at the patreon we might have some other fun stuff I feel like maybe we can do a watchalong of that Jacob trouba documentary on Twitter that that might be a lot of fun we’ll have to have to watch it and see all you have to do is go to Emily kaplan’s U all right her her Twitter she was she was the uh she you know this is it the way that this is being covered it’s like uh and maybe it’s because the debate there’s some recency bias that the debate just happened but I feel like the the discourse is kind of like spilling over into the same language kind of tone I guess the same tone of the way the debate was just covered like it’s crazy out there and so the fact that she had to uh resurface this this documentary from a tweet October 11 2022 so before last season and uh the the documentary is um I guess I want I’m going to call it a Fluff piece it definitely I haven’t watched it but I’m sure it’s a huge you know Rangers fluff piece because it sounds like it’s um kind of praising Jacob trouba for for not being the prototypical like athlete where the the whole family uproots for you like he’s him and his wife are in this 5050 and that’s kind of the whole premise here is that he’s doing that and taking a different approach and that the comments are all this is a lovely story lovely story and then like you that’s all and then like a year later with obviously people started tweeting about it or or commenting on it again it’s like oh my God this sucks like get rid of him I’ll drive him to the air it’s so good it’s called The Journey that led J Rangers captain Jacob trouba and his wife to NYC and it’s I guess it’s like a short maybe like outside the lines type of thing so maybe maybe we can do that that that’d be a lot of fun to kind of do we can do all the Rangers all the Rangers documentaries oh wow that’s a really good idea because they’re probably free anyway that would actually be funny because I was gonna say I did a couple of days ago Rectify a great wrong in my life by watching Young Blood the first time which I had to buy on DVD and I gotta tell you it was fine I thought it I thought the movie was fine didn’t change my life but uh I thought it was fine my wife less impressed uh than than I was she’s like this is one of the dumbest movies I’ve ever seen so uh she I’m probably not wrong but I I kind of found it somewhat entertaining uh but yeah so we’ll have to see but you never know that’s what I’m saying is you never know what’s going to happen at the patreon so sign up Islanders uh patreon.com Islanders anxiety uh we all thank you so much for listening all year it’s been a wild ride uh this episode being as long as it is is kind of a uh I guess a microcosm of how the season went it was a lot lots of ups and downs and and getting mad and and having a good laugh and stuff so we really appreciate you guys all hanging with us and supporting us and we hear from you all the time and it’s great to you know connect with people on on this level and and people say to us something you guys say what what I’m thinking or what I was feeling and and that’s so so satisfying to us and we we really appreciate it especially if you’re a patron thank you again than so much for your hard-earned dough we really appreciate that as well but if you’re not we appreciate it and uh thank you all for coming out to the live event too this year I don’t know if we’ll do another one but we had a great time and uh hopefully if we do we uh get a little bit of a big crowd and uh we got a a better sounding uh podcast although I thought it came out okay so if you haven’t had a chance go back and listen to that weird Islanders podcast thank you to our weird Islanders guests for coming on and uh emailing me back which is often the hardest part of getting weird Islanders together uh we’ll be back next year uh the schedule’s out the Islanders start I believe October 13th I want to say maybe the 10th I don’t know we’ll figure it out but uh we’ll be back I know is that yeah they got they they opened the season at home against Utah yeah and I thought their first must-win game was going to be October 17th against St Louis because they go Utah then they’re on the road in Dallas and then Colorado so it’s like okay maybe they can win one of those games but then they got they gotta win that game in St Louis but that’s someone pointed out to me on Twitter today uh that the Utah game the the first game of the season is actually a must-win because you go out on a on a three game Road Trip you could start the season 0 and four feels like the Islanders are already 0 and four so uh we’re yeah we’re in we’re already in a lot of trouble here uh we got to start thinking about uh you what we’re going to do to out of this ride is Patrick W the answer right I mean also you lose that first game to Utah man I don’t even want to hear I don’t want I would have to go offline for 10 days thank God they have they have a they they play us they play a game at home before they play us oh thank God thank God yeah I was that was the first thing I thought I was like if this is their [ __ ] first game and I have to hear about Ryan Smith being at UBS Arena to watch them beat the Islanders that son of a [ __ ] is like we haven’t played a game yet you can’t boo us dude do you have any idea where you are we’ll boo you for anything I know I was really hoping there there was going to be like a coyotes chant or something I hate that guy I hate him so much already me too he looks like that he looks like one of the actors from The Scrub spin-off season I love scrubs and I but I absolutely hated obviously the like the the the the breathless season yeah yeah yeah um and he looks like one of the actors who was the um the main characters in like the the med school um and I hated that guy for being on the show and I realized that’s part of the reason I hate this Ryan it’s not the the full reason I hate this guy uh but it’s definitely his name is Michael Mosley the actor well I mean I hate Ryan Smith because he looked like John Cooper how are they not the same person like I just and eventually Cooper will probably end up coaching in Utah and it’ll be really weird but uh yeah so but I I I hate him too I I already and I liked I had like an affinity for the coyotes there was that whole you know um you know like like you said with the Panthers about just right teams that are always under threat of relocation Etc and so it’s the same team but I [ __ ] hate Utah already well it’s a different vibe it’s a totally different completely different uh okay did did you clear out your notebook is there anything left uh that we need to get to we didn’t get to talk about uh Kenny jansson and Ryan Smith being elected into the double IHF Hall of Fame we’ll wait till the adduction ceremony I’m sure Kenny will give a lovely speech but uh we will shout that out but uh congratulations to those guys it’ll be a big year for uh mid-2000s Islanders to get into theihf Hall of Fame well deserved for for both guys I will say but anything else uh in your notebook that you want to get out before we close up shop for the season no we I think we cleared the notebook pretty well I mean I I I’m imagining we’ll reconvene at some point because I don’t think that um the Islanders are done because of their cap situation right um I know that it’s for the best that the Islanders move on from uh C Clutterbuck and Matt Martin maybe not Clutterbuck as much but you get the point like Clutterbuck Martin walstrom Etc but seeing those guys in Italy uh with Josh Bailey I was like man maybe Josh is just needed a year off maybe he he’ll be reinvigorated um and I also will say that on so that was Friday night when those videos of them all yeah in that was essentially an orgy um with the the chain smokers um was wased like I woke up in the middle of the night um that night like just you know around 300 or 4 in the morning and I swear to God my first thought was oh my God those guys must be so [ __ ] hung over right now that’s the first thing I thought when I when I opened my eyes I was like Matt barcel must be so hung over right now they were trashed and just short listen yeah it’s uh yeah I I look the season as you said this is it for us for the season officially um it was a crazy season uh we talked about jet Greaves there was so many moments jet Greaves esque moments that we had to endure as a fan base together we had to watch the Islanders go to Montreal and p uh Patrick W get a a rousing Ovation the next he was he was the Islanders coach for about eight minutes and the next day the hockey media was talking about how they wish that he was coaching the team they were playing against like it was just it was an insane season where just every twist was a no even us who we I feel are Adept and our fan base is very Adept at seeing these things coming couldn’t have made up all the stuff that happened to us this season but they didn’t win the Stanley Cup but neither did the the bad guys and The Season’s ending with like Anthony boiler and Oliver walstrom necking on a stage in Italy for Ry pak’s wedding um so yeah and the Rangers absolutely melting down the Rangers melting down Captain yeah yeah I mean it’s if if you had T if you had said look Mike we’re going to put you into an indued coma as soon as the first the the season preview episode ends and we’re going to wake you up for the last episode of the season and we’re going to show you two still shots and it was the image of uh the the post with uh Jacob trouba the Jacob trouba wife situation and the Islanders with their Italian long neck beers uh dancing I’d be like oh [ __ ] the Islanders w a stany cup and Jacob the Rangers must have sucked right I I I’ll just take that you know they didn’t win the Stanley Cup but they came very close I mean if you’re partying with one another in in Italy and cow clutter bucks singing Mr into a into a microphone that isn’t on egg ball right Adam pelic was back there I showed it to my wife and she’s like what is that I’m like this is the Islanders at Ryan Pollock’s wedding they’re all singing it was like Islanders in Italy I was like that’s Pier angal that’s Ryan pulock that’s uh I said all the Adam pelic back there Cal Clutterbuck on the mic Casey zus is there I was like pointing them all out and uh that is the happiest I will ever say I’ve seen Cal Clutterbuck on camera like not in a game situation obviously when he scores a goal or something but like when that guy is in front of a camera he becomes like a mortician like he’s just like he doesn’t want to show any emotion at all this time whatever Ryan pulock was doing at that wedding pulled out himself what a what a beautiful yeah like I mean look uh the Rangers had their four documentaries this season we’ll see what what what four or five documentaries they get next year but I I the Islanders just just the the content that we got from uh yeah the uh the burner verse The Islander burner verse and the the wives and girlfriends was just was so much better than Miracle at the metal lands or or whatever make a documentary about this wedding that’s what I yeah I I well I’m assuming that there’s going to be a you know spend that much money on a on a wedding right that you’re going to have a video rer there who’s going to put together like an hour and a half yeah film for you and yeah I’m going to have to probably going to be the watch along you do you take that take all the the wedding footage right you send it to is’s territory let him make the video of this that’ll be the greatest movie of all time I swear to God I would pay money to rent out a theater to watch that that would be the greatest thing ever it’s it’s not even Hallmark but it’ be like one of those other channels but it’d be like the the movie would be the the uncles the uncles in Italy like it’s an Uncle’s trip to Italy it’s I I I couldn’t believe my eyes I still I watched that that video of of walstrom and boiler a million times a million times I think like at this point and the look on both like how just unfazed he is by the fact that he’s just sitting there you know grinding on Oliver walstrom without they’re both shirtless with the beer the beer in his hand like he’s there’s maybe there’s just no one home because it’s late at night in Italy there techno blasting someone’s got a camera in his face and he just completely like these guys truly do love one another and they kick the [ __ ] out of the Penguins and the Bruins together so I guess that Bond really yeah you know brings you together I just again like you said before I feel bad that Anders Lee wasn’t there but he’s kind of like the team Dad I think so he might not have had as good a time but maybe he would have but yeah uh I also don’t want to have to be an Islander and have to uh answer some questions from L larell when you touch back down at JFK Oliver we extended you the qualifying offer and the day that we announced it you were making out with Pittsburgh Penguin forward Anthony boiler Ryan this is lamell give me a call I need to talk about your wedding H my God Ryan P Ryan P’s gonna live under an assumed name in in South America after he hear that but anyway but congratulations to the pulock congratulations to the Islanders for having the time of their lives in Italy must be nice when all your friends millionaire so there you go close to Millionaires and you can have weddings like that but uh thank you again for spending your season with us we’ll be back next season we hope you guys had a lot of fun we hope we hope we made it as much fun as we possibly you again for listening All Season uh we it’s been it’s always fun um to do the show this show I was looking forward to doing uh quite a bit because of uh the uh the happenings across the river um and Beyond but every show is is fun in its own way and the best part is of course you know just hearing from people and talking about uh as Dan said just like the way that this team makes us feel um and if we’re able to to help you sort through those um whether it’s a nightmare or good times or bad times whatever it is um yeah it’s a it’s a pleasure it’s a pleasure to do it and uh it’s a pleasure um sitting on this side of the computer from uh from you and and I always appreciate and want to make sure that everyone knows that you do most of the the hard work on the show um and and deserve uh all the credit in the world for doing that um because yeah that the it’s not it’s I know it’s not easy especially when we getting into two hour episodes where half the episode is about uh Jacob trouba uh who who who got the first dedication in Islanders anxiety history despite playing for the for the New York Rangers the team that we hate the most so I think he’s eared the most but but I appreciate it thank you very much for those very kind words obviously the show is not the show without the both of us so yeah I’ll be up a while editing this one but it’ll be fun and uh I was it’s always a good time this is this is our therapy I think so we have a lot of time a lot of fun here and uh I think uh we’ll all be in the same boat this summer hoping these editions work out well hoping the Rangers continue to melt down and hoping the Islanders learn how to kill a penalty between now and October I will say I wish we had credits so like at the end of the season we could roll the credits and we could say you know the special thanks to and um because for for us the special thanks would be to people who have no idea that they’re getting any credit so special thanks to James Myrtle and fox jukebox yeah Special thanks to and Rob Rossy of the Pittsburgh and of the athletic No it’s h oh yeah oh for sure Chris Johnston yes of course thank you so much for for all the hard work um and carrying water for for Kyle dubis and uh Chris jury and Beyond we we really appreciate um all the hard work and well you’ll be hearing a lot more from from these people through US definitely and uh maybe maybe this will find its way to some Cottages out on the Canadian lake somewhere we’ll see but thank you all for listening and again if something happens we’ll be back so this might not be our season finale but assuming it is thank you very much for listening we’ll talk to you next season sometime before the season starts and uh see where where the Islanders are at then all right take care have a great summer a great Fourth of July and we’ll talk to you then take care bye [Music] bye and every time I it’s my [Music] mind all I need you s it [Applause] down but still going to W up [Applause]
Mike and Dan empty their tanks on the Islanders free agency signings, the draft, the Rangers imploding and The Wedding of the Century. It’s been a busy few days on Long Island, and they’ve been good for the Islanders. Despite the craziness of free agency day, they signed speedy winger Anthony Duclair and brought back defenseman Mike Reilly on two very reasonable deals. Before that, they had talented prospect Cole Eiserman fall into their lap at the draft, and took a few other notable names as well in later rounds. And across the Atlantic Ocean, the players and some former teammates shirtlessly partied the night away with The Chainsmokers at the Pulock wedding in beautiful Italy. Meanwhile, other teams are making regrettable mistakes or deluding themselves, the Rangers are publicly botching the trade of their captain, TSN and ESPN are insulting their audiences and prospect writers are shoveling more nonsense than usual. We have a lot to get to in this season finale, but most of all we thank you for hanging with us throughout another season and we hope we made it a little more fun for you. We’ll be back in October (unless there’s news to discuss).
