The cases of the Oilers and Blues are entirely different from the Golden Knights' case. The Oilers came from the NHL/WHA merger and the Blues were placed in a division with all of the other initial expansion clubs (not suprisingly, the champions of the other division, which consisted of the Original 6, swept them each time).
