The Day After: Edmonton Oilers 2, Vancouver Canucks 3 Discussion | VAN LEADS 3-2

In today’s Day After Episode, I discuss the #oilers 3-2 loss to the #canucks in game 5 of their second-round matchup. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl were held at bay, and Edmonton’s Powerplay was neutralized. The Oilers did have a strong start but from the 2nd period onward the Canucks controlled play and scoring chances. Despite a strong showing from Calvin Pickard, Edmonton finds themselves on the brink of elimination heading back to Rogers Place for Saturday’s game 6 matchup. The Oilers are hoping this does not turn into a repeat of last year against Vegas where they watched a lead slip away in game 5 and then lost game 6 at home. Edmonton is going to have to play much better if they want to force a game 7. #nhl

  1. I donā€™t think Perry has been that bad considering his ice time. He hasnā€™t been a defensive liability and is one of the few who isnā€™t afraid to hold onto the puck behind the Canucks goal. Other guys immediately get rid of the puck but Perry is trying to make a play. But I agree with pretty much everything else, it all adds up to not good.

  2. In game 7 of the 2016 NBA finals Tye Lue demanded more out of Lebron after Carrying the Cavs back from 3-1 down. Great coaches can always get more out of their players no matter how much they do for the team. If Lebron could be called out so can McDavid. We need more

  3. Nucks fan, just the mere fact these two get to square off in Round 2 and seeing the blend of Oiler jerseys n Nucks ones in opposing Venues is a real treat. Hell of a Series, back n forth. If it goes 7 great for all but we need to end this Saturday. Good luck.

  4. Austin Huge Canucks fan appreciate your honest assessment and non Homer Approach Favorite expression from you For the Love Of God … in Vancouver ours was " Just do something"

  5. Canucks fan here, love your takes. It's funny, reminds me of how I like to dig into the Canucks lineup and get into a state that I like to call "passionately objective". I think this series is so tight, and the fan bases are so passionate about the teams, and we see a ton out there and have strong opinions. But it is based on what we're seeing in the games and from the team.

It's funny cause after last game, myself with some friends and family were talking about how Edmonton looks way hungrier and wants it more. How we don't look like we give a sh**. Crazy the swings from one game to the next. In general I think Oilers fans are awesome and super intense (I've spent enough time in Edmonton and Alberta to witness first hand). I would have been pulling for Edmonton if the Canucks weren't in the mix.

Will be checking out your videos more and subscribing to the channel.

  6. The Oilers played horribly for most of the game, maybe itā€™s the 30 minutes of playtime catching up to their top players. Hongcouver dominated play for way too much of the game.

  7. As I had predicted weeks ago, Oilers are not deep enough. Reaching Round 2 is the real achievement, everything else is the miracle category. Let's look at the bright side: Canucks may have some chances in the conference final as well. Overall, Canadian teams are unlikely to reach Stanley Cup final, let alone winning it.

  8. canucks fan here and I think you are right about what is wrong with the team.
Not sure why they don't spread some of the scoring depth to the 3rd line. Such a top heavy team.

  9. Shots on goal was 32-24 that calculates to a 3-2 win for Canucks. Give the Canucks more shots oilers will lose every game

  10. I have a suggestion, playing two head monster for full 60 mins without rest, otherwise I don't see they can win šŸ¤—

Time for checkmate in Game 6

  11. Canucks arenā€™t tired cause they donā€™t play their top 2 players for literally half the game each, Nucks have depth on the bench, like come on oilers, weā€™re beating you guys with our 3rd string goalie, just wait til Demko is back, not to take anything away from the guy filling in for him, heā€™s going amazing!!

  12. Regarding Holland's drafting not being good enough, imagine the Oilers if instead of Dylan Holloway, he picked Dawson Mercer, instead of Raphael Lavoie, he picked Nils Hoglander, instead of

Xavier Bourgault he picked Wyatt Johnston (7 goals, 4 assists during these playoffs), instead of Philip Broberg, he picked Trevor Zegras, Matt Boldy, or Cole Caufield.

  13. Well that was a tough loss. Nurse 2 assists all playoffs lets the guy have time and space to make a play. You cant let players have time and space thats all thier looking for. Van played well but our big guns fired blanks. 5 pps couldn't get a goal probly cost us the game. Cant let the game be settled by a bounce at the end especially when you know the other team gonna push. Gotta put it away early. Now we gotta win two in a row which hasn't been done in this series. I think our biggest need this off season besides goaltending better be a puck moving defensemen. Got smothered most of 2nd and 3rd no clean breakouts. To much throwing the puck away. Cant put it all on mcdavid but his guy scored the winner. Worst game I've seen mcdavid play in his career, missed the net on most of his shots. Im sure we'll win game 6 at home but gotta find a way to win in van. I agree our biggest advantage in this series should be experience but it has'nt showed. nuge, nurse and hyman should show some leadership by doing the little things right.šŸ˜ŠSCRATCH nurse, I'd rather lose without him then win with him. derek ryan did alot during the game i felt.

  14. Reason Canucks will likely take this series:

    1) superior coaching with a clear system
    2) Canucks know what they are as a team, Oilers seem to know what they arenā€™t (no 3rd or 4th line)
    3) Canucks never say die attitude
    4) oilers over playing stars
    5) Canucks number one goalie returning who is a game stealer

  15. Im 100% with you Austin
    on the Holland Situation

He hasen't done enough on deadline & were in year 8 or 9 of the McDrai Era it han't improve at all from what ive witnessed nothing felt diffrent in the playoffs im just seeing de ja vu all over again like last year everything is just plain old PP Russian hockey. Im ready for Big Change in managment it's time for a Gm who understands winning

  16. Every game so far i want the oilers fans to suffer then after the canucks win i feel so bad for them. Geez its a love hate situation. Whatever happens im cheering for canada all the way

  17. Hey canucks fans, Do Oiler fans jump in on canucks review channels just to troll? I wouldn't know because I don't watch canucks fanpages, but I truly don't understand the logic there.

  18. Out of 9 games since the start of the season, Oilers have won 2, and were outscored overall by a hefty margin. And of those 2….one went to OT, and the other was VERY close right to the end.

Someone please explain to me how the Oilers are better?

perfect example of how the collective ego restricts fundamental logic from the human brain.

  19. That was a perfect example of the ailment that this team has displayed over the years. Just one example: the bubble play-in series against Chicago. The Oilers lost because they didnā€™t play. They just didnā€™t hustle and go. Thereā€™s no reason for it. Something just comes over them. Theyā€™re pro athletes being payed to play and they donā€™t play. They had that game in the first. Vancouver outplayed them for the rest, but still didnā€™t go ahead in the score! Perfect opportunity to steal a game if you only play for 10-20 minutes in the second or third period. But no.

  20. So I guess thatā€™s it. End of the season and the end of the team, probably. Let the old men retire and sell off what still has any value. Another decade or more to tank and rebuild. I hope Katz sells the team so we can get a decent president and GM.

  21. I liked the oilers, and we had that mutual respect thing with the Ryan Smyth sedin send off thing. It's getting really tough to keep that respect the way oilers fans have become. You seem like a good stream and got my respect.
