The Minnesota Wild will officially Draft 13th Overall in the 2024 NHL Draft #minnesotawild #mnwild

On today’s episode of Locked on Wild, we start by recapping the NHL Draft Lottery, with San Jose keeping Macklin Celebrini away from Chicago by securing the 1st overall pick. We look at how the rest of the lottery played out and at how the Wild have done with first round picks throughout their franchise history. We dive into Carter Yakemchuk’s Draft Profile, with thoughts from Scott Wheeler on an impressive offensive resume for Yakemchuk to pair nicely with his 6 foot 3 size. We also discuss Adam Jiricek, and what concerns may still exist from his pre-draft injuries.

  1. So when I think about drafting another defenseman, I see 2 strategies that I would analyze. I personally would look to either find Faber a LD top line partner, that would be a cornerstone for the next decade. OR, we stack that RD RIGHT SHOT side for the top 2 pairs. Both of these have specific advantages and set backs…but looking at our current prospect pool….a RD position is more intriguing to me. Not a lot of teams have a stacked right side like that honestly….averages suggest LD is much more saturated. It gave, and continues to, give guys like Dumba and Burns more value than if they played LD and shot left, even to this day! I've had my eye on Yakemchuk to fill this role since last off-season, and I don't know of any other RD's that could fit nicely in the Wild organization.

Lastly…and most painfully…"hoping" players fall to our pick at #13 wouldn't have been a problem HAD THEY kept nuking the season (from January on) to stay in the top 6 picks for this draft. These details matter…BIG TIME. At least with Faber, I have a sense of ability to build around him, we couldn't do that with Dumba, especially after his injury that killed his shot.

  2. The NHL is overdue for a change with how they award the top draft picks each year. A bad team doesn’t deserve anything.

My suggestion: a natural rotation every year. 5 teams vying for the top 5 picks. Different 5 teams the next year..and so on. A team will have a chance at the first overall every 6-7 years.

  3. Let’s hope that we get rid of M.J and or Uncle Freddy and then we can worry about potential picks that can help us 5 years from now….love the show Seth.
