Avalanche Take Game 2 and Head Back to Colorado With the Series Tied Up

The Colorado Avalanche did pretty much everything the same as Game 1 against the Winnipeg Jets, but added much better goaltending to the equation, and the result was a convincing 5-2 win over the Jets. The series now heads back to Colorado tied up at 1.

The Avs used four 2nd period goals, then lock down defense in the 3rd that prevented any Winnipeg comeback attempt. Couple that with a much needed solid performance from Alexandar Georgiev and the Avs looked in command and in control for the majority of the game.

  1. Trenin forgot to play D on G1 but made up for it on Parise's goal. Would be nice to clean that up. *I've been impresses at the Avs effort, flipping the switch. They have an energetic bottom six & super skilled top six.

  2. Great team effort awesome win. The third period was some of the best playoff style hockey we have seen out of this team. Let’s hope that carries over good game out of the goaltender. Still a little nervous about that situation let’s go boys.

  3. Took some heat for liking Mansons game game 1 liked him again game 2 even better. Cleaned up his play some in own zone and was an energetic factor moving the puck and scoring .

  4. Well played georgiev. Even in moments of defensive mishaps he made some key saves. As the series goes on well see how much he fights to keep pos 1. Keep making those saves, hopefully it was just game 1 shenanigans. Playoff georgiev is what we need.
How about mansons hands there. 👍

  5. Props to Georgiev on a really solid performance. Even with the crowd trying to get in his head, he remained stout between the pipes. Speaking of the Winnipeg crowd, they got their karma for the chants/mock cheers. 😅

Back the Denver we go tied up! #GoAvsGo

  6. Where is the Awesome Sauce douche canoe troll? He's quieter than those Winnipeg fans today. Mom's internet doesn't work too well in the basement I guess. 🤡

  7. In the first period when the score was 1 – 0 and the shot count was 9 – 1 in favor of the Jets I thought "Well this is better. This is where I've seen this team WIN most of the time this season." Weird, I know … Cheers!

  8. This reminds of the edmonton series 2 years ago. Give up 6+ goals in game 1. Play better defense game 2. Get 3 goals close to each other in the 2nd period… speaking of which…. frankie frankie!!!

  9. The output tonight wasn't enough if this is the blueprint going forward it'll be a short playoff run. Cycling the puck for half the PP looking for an open lane will never work. Make your success don't wait for it to present itself to you.

Open a lane up yourself with movement well timed shots. Greasy is the only goals you'll get in this series. Don't try to out finesse the AVS.

  10. Depth scoring has been the story. This is what was missing from the Kraken series last season. To win a game without a single goal from MacKinnon or Rantanen is what they needed. Imagine if MacKinnon gets going? Manson's breakaway was comedy gold, man. I absolutely was expecting a save on that one.

  11. 25:32 totally agree Chris! I thought kivi had a great game! He had a huge block in the 3rd that saved a goal cause georgiev was down and out (not sure what happened there) but overall great bounce back from the whole squad!

  12. not sure if mikko is hurt r what but he just seems off timing everyting seems like hes always reaching for the puck and not taking that extra step

  13. Now that the series is tied and it's moving to Denver, everything feels like a reset. I have to go with "Start Over" as my Band-Maid sound check for the game. To be honest, I feel like the Avs outplayed the Jets in both games.

  14. Admittedly, I was on the “roast Georgiev” bus after game one. Never been happier to be proven wrong. Kudos to his teammates as well as I have a strong feeling while we all roasted him, they were lifting him up behind the scenes. Hell of a performance by the entire team last night and loved the response to the early Jets push. That’s the team that can win the cup. And honestly, outside of the few breakdowns in game one, they’ve been great so far and in a hostile environment. Now just hold serve at home and put a stranglehold on the series. LFG Avs 💪

  15. I've been a Georgie defender all year and got so pissed off I joined the mob after game 1. I'm so glad he came back with the kind of performance we have seen from him many times this season, and I hope he can keep it up. Key to it was the absolutely stellar defense in front of him. They were so much better this game and if they keep that up, they can win every time. It's been my belief that when this team plays to the best of their ability, they can beat anyone in the league. That third period where they just locked it down was awesome to watch.
Unexpected to hear Kiviranta's name a bunch of times – he was all over the place, great performance. I feel like he's been mostly invisible so that was really nice. The depth really stepped up last night. Exactly what they need.
Val's empty netter was an amazing shot – what an angle! – and I'm glad he got it, because he worked his butt off last night.

  16. Did y'all enjoy how they showed Hellebuyck's "eye exercises" before the game? 😅It's interesting that he had another shaky game, given his caliber. He's known for not being able to perform as well in the playoffs as he does in regular season. Avs have to jump on that and kill his confidence.

  17. I'm full of comments today lol. ESPN announcer mentioned Bednar saying the whiteout gave him chills and was a really electric atmosphere, and suggested he was "throwing down the gauntlet" for the Denver crowd. What an absurd statement, as if Ball Arena isn't one of the most difficult places to play with a demonstrably rabid fanbase. I'll say this: I was at the Jets 7-0 beatdown, and damn near nobody left after the second period. There were more fans there to the bitter end of that humiliation than there were at the end of the Jets' defeat last night.

  18. I'd like to say HEYTOLDYASOHUH but I'm too mature to make a comment like that.
PS: We gonna call Connor 4forabuck, now? Twennyfie cent?

  19. And what about Georgiev? Well, real Avs fans do not destroy him verbally after one bad playoff game! You guys better learn from your mishap! Georgiev was and is the no 1 Avalanche goalie, Kyle! 😛

  20. You two guys are only "nice weather Avs fans." As history has shown, Hellebyuck in the playoffs IS NOT the same as in the regular season. Georgiev 9 goals, but the guy who was called "best in the NHL" 10 goals!!

  21. I'm so glad Georgiev bounced back but one game doesn't earn back all the trust going forward. Consistency has been his issue, so only time will tell.

  22. See Kyle they do just fine if not better without Girard. Jones can do everything Girard can do AND withstand the barrage of hits WPG is dishing out. But I already know Bednar will screw that up by inserting Girard back in.

  23. Let's put it this way: If Georgiev had Hellebuycks's game on Tuesday night, the Avalanche fans would be baying for Bednar's job and AG would be flying commercial back to Denver. Maybe Bulgaria. CH was asleep on Wood's 5 hole goal and he looked like Edward Scissorhands handling the buck behind the net, which lead to Parise's goal. AND . . . he let Josh Manson – JOSH MANSON – beat him 5 hole on a breakaway.

The Avs are getting about what we expected out their goalie – on average. The Jets are not. The Avs have put 10 goals on CH in 2 games. I'm not worried about him. But the Jets should be.

  24. Never realized till this game how fast Morrissey really is, we gotta keep stopping shots from the blue line. We are only tied, still more series to go, but I could see it on the faces of the Jets players at their press conference, they feel they have this series. Lowry especially just has a smirk I hope we remove. Just happy we stayed on the gas. Hope we can string 2 more wins in Denver, that would help.

  25. All the Avs need is DECENT goaltending. He doesn't have to win it for them. He just can't lose it for them. I'm loving what I'm seeing from the depth too. If the top line really gets rolling…look out, NHL.

  26. The 3rd period was a carbon copy of game 6 vs Tampa, its the Avs at their peak when it comes to shutting down a game
