Playoff Performances Thus Far and Where To Improve

I take an overall look at the Jets performance over two games using the numbers and also my observations from tracking the team’s zone entries, zone exits, retrievals, recoveries, entry denials, and forechecking.

As always, any thoughts or questions are appreciated. Also, feel free to send me questions for the mailbag.

2nd line needs to show up if we’re going to win this series

  2. For much of the last game we were sprinting into their zone and they quickly cleared and we’d repeat one or two more times then we were tired and the Mack, Rant, Mak line had their way with us in our zone for sustained amounts of time. Colorado has switched to more of a trap style where they clog up the neutral zone and force us to dump and chase where their D is now playing deeper and getting to pucks first for easy clears. Jets meanwhile are overextending on the forecheck and the Avs more skilled first line is cutting through the neutral zone at will. Our gaps are too big and we looked to be chasing the puck a lot without much puck retrieval success. Avs have clearly adjusted their game to better match our strengths so the Jets will need to counter.

Great goaltending is required regardless of all of the fancy stats. The Jets aren’t getting that, and this is our major issue. Last night’s game was winnable even though we didn’t play our best game. At some point, Broissoit is going to have to be considered. If Helly doesn’t perform in game 3 and Broissoit doesn’t get the call, this series is all but over. No team has ever gone deep in the playoffs with subpar goaltending.

Great article as always, it’s been such a bright spot this season getting your weekly stats analysis like back in the old Arctic Ice Hockey / HFboards days arguing about Pavs and Burmi. I didn’t realize how much I’d missed them until they became a regular part of my feed again 😛

The section about Bowness’ preferred matchups actually backfiring is really interesting. I really like what he’s brought to our team in terms of culture shift, but it does seem like he has a few preferences like that which don’t really align with what the numbers say. I’m curious what numbers the Jets are looking at internally and if they might be telling them something different, or if it’s just standard coaching eye test and expertise.

Definitely agree about bringing Perfetti back too. Maybe it’s crazy, but I’d like to see the lines we ran with Perfetti on the second and Toffoli on the 3rd again.

Pionk must have dirt on someone in the organization 😂

yeah ideal world Perfetti, Schmidt, and Miller come in

that alone probably improves our exits enough to have a tangible effect on possession and chances
