The Pittsburgh Penguins have some important restricted free agents this summer and Hunter and Pat are here to give their thoughts on which ones to bring back. They start with PO Joseph after he had a great end to the season. Does that warrant a roster spot heading into next season? Where would he fit if he were to come back? They then analyze Emil Bemstrom’s season and if he showed management enough to warrant coming back for another season. After that, they dive into other free agents, such as Jack St. Ivany (which should be a no-brainer) and Sam Poulin. Hunter and Pat then look at which players could be extension candidates this offseason outside of Sidney Crosby. Should Marcus Pettersson be re-upped? What about Drew O’Connor? They have to be careful they're already tied into long term deals with Jarry and Graves. It will effect the cap space.
Yes, extend OC and keep St Ivany. Not sure on P.O.?? You could maybe get something for him as a second player in trade to sweeten it but who knows? Dubas better get busy like yesterday. Great job guys.
Should be rebuilding and weaponizing cap space for picks, not signing long term deals to stay in eternal bubble purgatory.
I would trade Pettersson this summer. I wouldn't re-sign Crosby either. If Friedman is correct, that's 10.5M AAV.
That's cap you could use towards taking on bad contracts in exchange for picks they'll need for when they're relevant again.
Using it on Crosby is a waste, since they're not gonna win squat in the remaining years that he's here. It's a decision based on sentiment.
Petterson is good, but they're really racking up quite a group of mid-tier players on long, expensive contracts.
St Ivany is a stay at home dman and I want him back in the bottom pair.
