r/Canucks update: “PLAYOFFS!!” edition

Oh hey there! It’s you. Didn’t see you there. How’s it going? That’s cool.

Guess what?

# THE CANUCKS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS!

# I REPEAT, THE CANUCKS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS!

You’re here, we made it, I can’t believe it’s not 15th overall again! Contrary to everyone’s expectations at the start of the season, the Canucks are the top seed in the playoffs. If you’ve been watching this team for a while, you know how exciting this team is and how special this moment is. If you’re new here, welcome aboard the hype train! This post serves as an introduction to our team, and to our subreddit. ~~COCONUTS GLOW!~~ GO CANUCKS GO!

# The Team

The Vancouver Canucks have undergone a transformation supreme. In a season and a half, our management has built an exciting, high-flying team filled with talent and heart. We win a whole lot of hockey games, we grab early leads and hold onto them, we spend a lot of time on the right side of the ice, and we score some [pretty](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ftou7Q0-Xdo) [dang](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vA4R0zrWBM8) [sick](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWYJYTcCHgY) [goals](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sldbhQZNlE8) [out](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tETVk97oRNE) [there](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBn-XQ8RE44). Oh, and we have a goalie who has made a [couple](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3ETrwDmsKM) [sick](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZ9oJEWDIH8) [saves](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzE2bEFpz4M) for us this year. It seems like the entire team is peaking at the same time, most of our roster is having career years.

The success of this team can’t be talked about without talking about the captain, #43, Quinn Hughes. A defenseman who could play 1st line center if he wanted to, he possesses a unique mix of offensive and defensive instincts. As a result, you’ll be seeing a whole lot of him out there. More than just a good player, he leads all our players in ice time and puck possession, and almost all play goes through Quinn when he is on the ice. If the Canucks won a game, you can be pretty sure he was a big reason why. He is the favorite for the Norris Trophy for best defenseman this year, and it seems like every couple weeks he breaks another franchise record.

You also can’t talk about the success of the team without talking about Thatcher Demko, our beloved goalie. Ever since [he carried a much weaker 2020 Canucks team](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b49C_5tY4o4) through an improbable playoff run, Canucks fans have known we have a special talent in net. Demko has a knack for coming up with incredible saves that sometimes leave opposing players visibly shocked. But he also has great positioning that often makes his game look easy. Always calm and collected, he has saved this team’s night or even their season on numerous occasions. He’s right in his prime now, a likely Vezina Trophy finalist as one of the league’s best goaltenders this year.

Speaking of superstar players in their prime, expect to find 1st line center Elias Pettersson out there between Nils Hoglander and Ilya Mikheyev. Pettersson can do it all: shooting, scoring, passing, defense. Mikheyev is incredibly fast, plays the boards well, and defensively responsible. Hoglander is still very young, but you can watch him getting better by the day and right now, his ceiling is sky-high as a playmaker, scorer and forechecker.

Right behind them, JT Miller will center the second line. He leads all Canucks in scoring this year, for the third time since he joined the team five years ago. He’s tough, too: he is the first player to get 100 points and 200 hits in the same season in 15 years. He and his winger/[Prince Charming lookalike](https://content.invisioncic.com/Mnhlcanucks/monthly_2018_02/494430EB-BFB3-4D8C-AFF5-61AA59ABD032.jpeg.2aaca4998efccc43a80a475ee12609f6.jpeg) Brock Boeser have been a dynamic duo this year: Boeser scored 40 goals this year for the first time, and Miller crossed 100 points for the first time. Pius Suter has been their linemate recently, a strong defensive player who we moved from center to wing, and he can occasionally add offense too.

Behind them, we have a strong group of forwards and defensemen, who are over-performing compared to expectations and have showed flashes of brilliance. Conor Garland, Dakota Joshua, Teddy Blueger, Elias Lindholm and Sam Lafferty have all played great defensive hockey while providing offense and playing clutch hockey overall. On defense, we have two certifiable giants in Tyler Myers (6’8″) and Nikita Zadorov (6’7″), and a big booming slap shot in Filip Hronek.

The whole team plays a fast, forecheck-heavy game with lots of skill and smart defense leading to offense. Head coach Rick Tocchet has brought a defense-first structure to the team with the goal of keeping the puck in the offensive zone as much as possible. When the Canucks succeed, they’re spending most of the game in the opposing zone, scoring early, holding onto leads, and minimizing dangerous shots from the other team. And this year, that seems to happen a lot!

We’ve been waiting a while for this moment – a truly excellent team at every position, healthy and hungry, competing for the Stanley Cup. This year’s team has defied expectations at every step, and we all look forward now to see just how far they can take that defiance.

# The r/Canucks Dream

If you’re new here, you might not be familiar with r/Canucks culture and what we expect of each other here. The most basic rule we have is to avoid being toxic. Don’t make things personal, don’t go aggro on someone because they didn’t share your hot take, remember the other people here are people too and deserve respect. Don’t be hateful (this should go without saying). Don’t follow users around different threads and harass them. **As a rule of thumb, if you wouldn’t say it to a friend’s face, don’t say it here.** If you think another comment is in poor taste, disrespectful to others here, or rule-breaking, **do not respond to it! Just report it so we can remove it. Don’t feed the trolls.**

During game day, we have a **Game Discussion Thread** pinned to the top of the sub to talk about the game. This is where we all hang out and talk about the game. If you have thoughts about the game as it happens, post them there as comments. New posts that talk about the game currently happening will be deleted and you’ll be advised to talk in the GDT. When we don’t play, we will have a thread to chat about all other games happening that day. And it should go without saying, but don’t post fake news about the Canucks, or bait titles that imply something that didn’t actually happen.

While it might seem helpful, **don’t post links to illegal streams, and don’t ask for them.** This is a very strict rule – other subreddits have been shut down for allowing these links to stay up. We know you’re just trying to get the game to more people, but we don’t want to get shut down, so we have to follow the rules.

**We don’t troll the other team subreddits.** That means that while we’re playing the Predators, if you make negative/bragging/angry comments in /r/predators, **you will be banned from both team subreddits**. If you feel the need to gloat, go do it in r/hockey. Leave the team subs to their fans to talk to each other, and if you go there, be extra respectful and don’t embarrass our community.

**If you’re looking for tickets,** either as a seller or a buyer, look for the other pinned post, which is a ticket sales exchange thread. Remember that this subreddit can’t protect you from being scammed, and to use an abundance of caution whenever dealing with ticket buying online.

We love our memes, and we love fan-made content here. The sillier, the better. With that said, **don’t post AI-generated content here.** This includes images, sounds and videos.

With that said, GO CANUCKS GO! Let’s have a great playoffs and ride this wave!

Can I just make a gentle request to the users? This isn’t a sub rule, but to me it’s a matter of class. Please don’t come into our sub reporting of what’s “going on” in other team’s subs. Honestly, if they want to complain that they got robbed by amazing goaltending, or that Miller is overrated, or bitch about the officiating, that’s their prerogative and honestly their sub is exactly the place for them to have their deluded biased takes. Besides, we know that our goaltender is god-tier, that Miller is glorious, and frankly we have a statue in front of our arena commemorating us bitching about the refs, so just let them have their venting space. We don’t need to tell everybody here what’s going on. It’s not very classy, and honestly what you’re doing (even if unintentionally) is encouraging our users to go over to their sub and brigade them – and that IS specifically against the rules.

So please, just don’t. Again if you want to talk about the other team’s reddit fans reactions, direct that to /r/hockey, because that sub is designed to allow us to trash talk each other (in fact there’s a thread every Friday specifically dedicated to that).

Some of the stuff I say to my friends would get me banned here.
