2nd in the Atlantic Division: Putting the Boston Bruins’ regular season in perspective

The Boston Bruins dropped their season finale against the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday, falling to second place in the Atlantic Division and setting up a first-round meeting with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

It would have been nice to see them win out and clinch first in the division, but they weren’t going all out in games that essentially meant nothing in the grand scheme AND they avoid Tampa, the Atlantic team they’ve struggled against this season.

Locked on Boston Bruins host Ian McLaren looks back at expectations for this team heading into 2023-24, and breaks down a few reasons why they exceeded them in a so-called “transition” season.

Plus, Jack Edwards is retiring and Danton Heinen was robbed of the NESN 7th player award.

  1. bruins grading- Fantastic goaltenders, Great Defense, very little offense
We knew going in this would be a tough year and to get 109 pts can't be upset
bruins have owned the season series but much different in playoffs if our goalies go back to average form we will be out in 5 games, need to force there D they suck
they have 5 star players / we have 2, going to be all about our 3rd liners and we have about 10 of them time to step up

  2. I don't know about you Ian, but it looked like they threw the games , last 2 to me.tgebruins knew if the panthers win, they would get Toronto. Bruins do not want to play lightning. It's not 2019, but Bruins s just can't beat Tampa, so im hoping they dropped to 2cd on purpose, and I see hard desperate playoff hockey vs leafs. If they have another 6 shot after 2 periods gm, then if im Sweeney I would get rid of half the team next year. Does this team have any heart? Well they brought in maroon for that. Bruins need him to shit on them on the lockeroom and keep the effort up. So we'll see, but right now it looks like another one and done series.

  3. All, one good thing is they finally scored a powerplay goal. And it was well executed, so hopefully that breaks the ice and they get rolling on pp. …if not?? They will lose in thec1st rd

  4. Ian always respect your take on the Bruins, but I feel this is a tad too optimistic for me. The Bruins literally mailed it in these last 4 games, and I am concerned that they won't be able to just flip the switch to be ready for a very motivated and talented Leafs team. I wish Monty would show a little more concern…reminds me of his press conferences last year as Florida was taking it to us…I hope I am wrong. GO BRUINS

  5. In years past we always physically dominated the leafs because they were soft. I didn't see that at all this year, we won the games but we know how much the regular season really matters when it gets down to it. This is going to be a major battle and the boys will have to be at their best to take this. The leafs are a weird team, they can score 5-6 goals on anyone and give up just as many but we don't want to play that game.

  6. The Bruins are becoming the team the Maple Leaf's have been. Great regular seasons & 1st round exits. No heart, no guts,, SOFT. This isn't your fathers Maple Leafs! Leafs in 7.

  7. I love Jack Edward's. He's the Marchand of NHL commentating . I'm going to miss that man . Quote me on that ! As far as the season ending , I believe we agreed as to what outcome they wanted 😉 God speed to all that is black and centennial gold

  8. Thanks Jack!
Lets get him another ring. Patrice Bergeron will call games in French & English!

    Congrats Trent !
Yes, my vote is Danton Heinen.
But he's lined up for the Masterson awards so maybe they know something

I didn't expect him to be a surprise, because Monty knew him from a long time ago, when Heinen was signed with the Bruins early on when he was playing for Denver and Montgomery came along as a coach his second or third year,

The Bruins connections go deep and wide… All the way to Denver

Monty knew exactly who and what he was bringing on to the bruins. Otherwise the PTO wouldn't have likely happened based on his stats.

But we needed to find a player of that caliber willing to play on a PTO contract – salary cap had nothing to offer.

I'm hoping they gave Frederick the award because they know Danton Heinen is going to get the Masterson
