Sharks Clinch Worst Team In NHL And Will Smith Has A Big Decision

The San Jose Sharks have officially claimed the title as the worst team in the NHL with their 6-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild. With the loss, they’ve locked up the top odds to win the NHL Draft lottery and the right to draft presumed first-overall pick Macklin Celebrini. Start by discussing how this was one of the season’s goals, and while it was a long and tough season for the Sharks, it was the right decision. Then, Will Smith finished his freshman season at Boston College with a 2-0 loss to Denver in the National Championship. What should he do next? Discuss his last game, how he almost had two goals, and why jumping to the NHL makes sense. Finally, the Sharks lost largely on Saturday night to the Minnesota Wild due to a second-period collapse. Look at the numbers behind the game, Collin Graf’s usage, and if this was Mackenzie Blackwood’s last start.

  1. I have a horrible sinking feeling we STILL won’t get the #1 pick. Sharks have never had the #1 overall pick. The NHL hates the sharks, plus we have a 75% chance of not getting it anyway. If Chicago gets two #1 picks two years in a row I’m gonna effin lose my shit.
If we don’t get #1, what are the chances Grier trades up to get it? We have the draft capital to do it. I know he won’t, but I wish he would (if we don’t get it).

  2. The Sharks will get a good player in the draft, possibly 3 or more. They will probaly get a high pick next year too. Then it will all be about development and free agents. The Sharks will need to get bigger and stronger. It was clear that Minnesota was the stronger team. Kaprisov was clearly a force on the ice.

  3. I can see the NHL rigging the draft lottery for the Coyotes since they’re moving to Utah. We all know they rigged it last year so Bedard could go to Chicago

  4. I’m not getting my hopes up with a #1 overall pick. The chances of winning is so slim even with the higher odds. Only 4 teams have won the lottery with having the worst record in the last 10 years those are not very good odds.

  5. The Penguins pick at this point is going to be 12-18, 29, 31, or 32. If they make the playoffs they can be at best the 2nd fewest points in the standings of playoff teams, so if they're eliminated before the Eastern Conference Final they'll have pick 17 or 18. If they lose in the ECF it will be pick 29 (they can't be ahead of any Western Conference team so they'd be behind the WCF loser), and if they lose in the cup final it's 31 and if they win the cup it's 32.

Edit: This isn't counting the lottery…they could miss the playoffs and win the lottery to jump to 2-6 in which case they likely defer the pick to next year.

  6. 2 fun questions for you JD:
Would you rather have 3rd overall + Pittsburgh pick or guaranteed 1st overall and no Pittsburgh pick?
Should we root for Pittsburgh to win the lottery? Would guarantee the Sharks a top 2 but postpone a first round pick to next year.

    Thanks

  7. I’ll be happy with top 2 pick. Demidov is a great consolation prize. I don’t really trust Grier to take a russian player that early though after his comments about Michkov last year, hope I’m wrong. 3rd pick would be sort of a disaster.

  8. Even with the best odds, I’ll be pleasantly stunned if the Sharks get the first pick. Last years lottery draft show was shady with how the draft order ended up & I can see the same thing happening again. The NHL never showed how the order process actually took place, but just sent out the official to reveal the numbered position cards. Totally wasted my time in watching last years NHL lottery show.

  9. Kirill Kaprizov was a 5th round, 14th pick, 135th overall in 2015 by the Minnesota Wild! Now, that's great scouting and drafting! In 73 games this year, Kirill has 44 goals, 49 assists for 93 points! He is most of the Minnesota Offense.
