In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the trade that sent Anthony Mantha to the Las Vegas Golden Knights. In return the Caps get the Caps get 2024 second-round pick and a 2026 fourth-round pick, and the team will retain 50 percent of Mantha’s salary. Mantha is having his best years as a Cap scoring 20 goals so far in the 2023/2024 season. Evgeny Kuznetsov Showed up at Hershey Bears practice on Tuesday. He was quick to make people laugh and seemed to be in good spirits. The Bear are back in action on Friday. So is the NHL trade deadline. The future of Kuzy in the Caps organization is in question. Matthews Phillips was let go by the Pens and now is back in the Caps organization. This time he’s headed to Hershey

All things considered this was a great return for a player like Mantha. Clearly he's playing great in a contract year ans is expecting BIG BUCKS on his next contract on this season alone. He knows he isn't getting some crazy 8 year 10+ million dollar contract but that he needs to cash in now while the irons hot.
And so did the Caps. They did. They struck while the iron is hot and got a LOT more than Mantha is probably worth any other season. Not a perfect deal but for the Caps a good deal.
I don’t mind the return honestly I figured we get a second but I also thought maybe we get like a decent prospect for him but I honestly don’t hate the return
I can't be too sad since this is his first productive season in a while but draft picks seems so thin.
I think they should have at least gotten a first, maybe a late first, in a year with some talent coming out. Any word if Mantha was willing to stay with the Caps or not? Keeping 50% seems a little high but he is a UFA. Also, with our picks this year, how deep is this draft? It will be interesting to see if he signs long term with Vegas.
As to Hershey, it sounds like a good place to catch a game.
Kind of underwhelming return. I'm guessing he's been shopped for a while and this was the best we could get. Doubtful waiting right up to the deadline gets a much of a better return and probably gets less as the market softens. What is for sure we weren't re-signing him. Had to get something for him.

Just as well. Money just for a few months. No big deal. Mantha won’t resign with caps so getting picks is better than nothing cause Mantha isn’t the piece that will bring the caps to the playoffs. It’s all on ovie having an amazing final 22 games with 15 goals.

I don’t care if he’s not always been great, he’s a Cap so he’s my dude. Wow some picks while we still pay half his salary, for our current best goal scorer…. I am now horrified to hear news the rest of week. “Finally he hit his stride!” …now let’s get rid of him 🙄
