Instill a system sure, but I would also like a coach that pushes his players harder it never feels like Granato pushes those guys when you’re watching him behind the bench.
Granato started the season by saying he had high expectations for this team. I’d sure like to know what his plan was for achieving them and how *exactly* it fell short from his view. because from our view, they didn’t do shit to hit the expectations
Maybe they need to send Donny to a mens retreat in the mountains so he can learn to build fires, fish and rock climb.
Granato isn’t getting fired. Waste of time discussion.
What does “instill a system mean?”
Terry Pegula finally showed up for a game last night. Wouldn’t you know Donnie and even Matt Ellis put on their best. Terry is probably thinking he has the coaches he needs for the long run.
Granato’s strengths are his self-awareness, his complete hockey knowledge from a player’s perspective, and the snappy blue frames on his specs.
But a tactician, he is not. I think his style is more predicated on feel, and staying close to the puck, rather than getting to a spot where you know a teammate will go…. and honestly that level of hustle and puck pressure works in nearly every hockey league in the world, but less so in the NHL where the best play the best. You need elite players doing elitely-difficult things *consistently* to win and set that standard, and that’s just not his most redeeming trait as a coach.
And quite frankly, this team is too goddamn talented to be stuck in neutral the past couple seasons.. something needs a shake up. Even if you keep him, you need a gut the staff and bring in some assistants with better results, especially on the PP.
