We’re talking about the idea that Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras could have as high a ceiling as Detroit Red Wings legend Pavel Datsyuk.

  1. I miss Pavel Datsyuk all the time.

Here's a fun challenge: Watch a Red WIngs game with the home-team Bally Sports Broadcast (Ken and Mickey) and don't hear some sort of mention of the magic man.

  2. Not even Zetterberg had a Pavel Datsyuk ceiling. Datsyuk was on a level all his own. To have anyone compared to him seems like an insult to Pavel's mystic.

  3. You sure say "I wasn't initially going to make a video about this" quite often. You're not fooling anyone here.. stop pretending, pandering and virtue signalling.

  4. I hated when people compared Kane to Datsyuk as Kane has some hands and a shot but that’s pretty much it. Kane has no defensive game and Datsyuk had a complete game. He was literally the most entertaining player that I have seen. Datsyuk retired from the NHL, early, because of multiple surgeries that caused issues with his balance. I remember all of his seasons. He used to never fall over. Players would try to get physical with him and they literally could never push him off the puck. This caused players to respect him and try to cover passing lanes instead of pushing him while he had the puck in the corner. His last season was completely different. You could touch him with one hand and he would fall over. Also, Datsyuk never really played with an elite player. Yes, he played with Zetterburg here and there but the last several years they mostly played apart. I also don’t think Zetterburg is as elite as many line mates other elite players had like with Connor and Crosby and ovechkin linemates. For example, Justin abdelkarer was playing on line one with Datsyuk and I thought he was extremely overrated. The wings are still paying him to this day even though he has not played in several seasons as yzerman would rather pay him out then see him play. Go back and look at his highest goal season. I swear a 25 percent of those goals were because Datsyuk literally shot the puck from the right wing at him and it bounced in the net. The best players Datsyuk played with hudler, filpila, and little bit with Tatar. Datsyuks points when compared to games played does not do his skill justice. Year after year top players were asked who the hardest player to play against was. Time and time again the answer was Pavel Datsyuk. This comparison is completely disrespectful and I’m glad it backfired.

  5. In order for it to be insulting one would have to take it seriously. This is the funniest joke I've heard in awhile.

  6. That writer is insane. Datsyuk had the drive to go along with the skills.
Zegras will never have the dedication or drive to even be even mentioned in the same sentence as Datsyuk.

  7. Zegras is 23 with two 60+ point seasons. He’s already good, not HOF good, yet, but he’s having a better start to a career than a lot of HOFers. Needs to get out of Anaheim, obviously, but he gets way too much grief

  8. Zegras won't ever be comparable to Datsyuk. He's an ok scorer/playmaker but not elite yet. Not to mention e is a defensive liability. He'll never come close to Datsyuk's all around greatness.

  9. Maybe he should say he has Lucas Raymond ceiling and then he should duck. Incoming!

I'd give him a Damien Brunner ceiling or maybe Andreas Athanasiou. LGRW

  10. Actually watch Zegras play – he looks lost and out of place most of the time. (at a home game- the fans are always yelling at him to get with it or what the hell are you doing?) He has no idea how to play defense. Yes he can be entertaining and exciting when he has the puck – he is flashy and does have good hands, but he is nothing more than the guy you see in warm ups doing flashy trick moves, then disappears in the game. Zegras is a good offensive player full stop – never has been or ever will be anything close to Datsyuk. Stupid comparison – Zegras, just be you.

  11. He hasn’t even looked up to his own potential, but I’m supposed to buy that he can be a Datsyuk-like player?! Not in temperament, not in 200’ play, not in any facet of this game we love. He may yet have an amazing career, but unless he snaps of several seasons of 90 pts and consideration for defensive awards… nah bro. Find another comparison. Just because you think you’re Jake Paul doesn’t mean you can get into the ring with Mike Tyson… ha!

  12. insult to zegras, datsyuk not on his level

datsyuk the most over rated player ever, never scored 40 goals and never had 100 points, zegras is clear 😘

  13. Zegras is a very good player…but seriously….comparing him to “The Magic Man”….You really ought to put down the pipe!

  14. I came into this video to see Pavel Datsyuk get disrespected BIG TIME… and the video starts by telling me he MAY have gotten disrespected -a little bit-. Now I feel like I got disrespected.

  15. Datsyuk has some of the clutchest goals of all time. If you are down 3-2 with a few minutes left nobody is more reliable than Datsyuk to come up clutch. I like Zegras but he could never compare to Datsyuk's greatness.

  16. There's something to be said about how these two got to the league. Datsyuk.. 6th round pick had to really work for everything he did. His rookie season playing with multiple HOF inductees including two of the best defensive (and offensive) forwards in the game in Yzerman and Fedorov. He was never "the guy" like zegras was coming in. There were no grandeous expectations. Zegras is a damn good player, but to get to the level of Datsyuk… he has quite a lot of work to do and even then I'm not sure he gets there.

  17. Datsyuk's defense is being overlooked in a major way here not to mention his offense is on a whole other level so yea major disrespect!

  18. Datsyuk was an amazing player, all around. I don't think Zegras would entertain an audience or crowd like Datsyuk used to. The Russians of that era (at least the ones that Wings acquired/drafted) you can say were gamers and winners compared to others in the NHL at the time. I think the Swedes, like Nick Lidstrom, were also starting to show that level of superiority in the NHL at that time. The aggressive nature of the game a generation or two ago was high more so compared to now. Finesse then was unique, and Datsyuk had that. He could dazzle the opponent with his skills which were never really matched by anybody after him.

  19. As a Wings fan, I can see the similarity. But I think it's unfair and unrealistic to pigeonhole players like this. Zegras is his own person.
