[Kurz] Tortorella today. Just great stuff.

Torts just fucking gets it. From day 1 he knew what it meant to be a part of this organization and how to get it back on track. None of that AV pandering bullshit. Torts cares deeply and he’s gonna get us to where we want to be. I feel it, down in my plums. I would run through a brick fucking wall for him.

The man deserves a lot of credit for how much he squeezed out of a bad roster for much of the season. But that said, I’m getting a little sick of the John Tortorella Show.

This team deserves as much credit as the coach gets. Most, if not all, of the guys on this roster spent a good 60 games giving it everything they’ve got. They were disciplined, they were conditioned, they were committed. And they far exceeded expectations for much of the year, partly driven by pure effort and will to win. Give Torts all the credit you want for getting it out of them, but don’t lose sight of the fact that these guys *bought in.*

So what’s happened now? Did they suddenly get to Game 65, sitting firmly in the Top 3 of the Metro, and collectively decide “Nah, we don’t feel like giving the effort anymore”? That makes zero sense. What team would defy expectations for 75% of the season and then give up when *it was actually working*? You can’t convince me that this struggle is the result of guys failing to buy in.

The most logical explanation I have, besides injuries and trading Walker, is that these guys are just. fucking. gassed. They emptied the tank to get where they are, and at some point that takes its toll. Every player save a couple look physically and mentally exhausted in many of these recent games.

And if that is the case – that they spent every last ounce of energy getting where they are – then Torts needs to take a look in the mirror. Because playing your ass off all season to run out of gas with ten games to go is very clearly not a way to win a Stanley Cup. Being hard to beat in December means very little if the tank is empty in April.

Good for him to realize his shortcomings here.

The players seem to be clutching their sticks too hard trying to be the hero.

Sometimes, you have to step back and look at yourself to identify the weakness and why thing are off track.
