What Can the Wild learn about how Dallas Constructed their Roster? #minnesotawild #mnwild #nhl

On today’s episode of Locked on Wild, we begin a reoccurring series looking at the roster construction of the top teams in the Western Conference. We start with the Dallas Stars and their ability to find draft hits in rounds other than the first, such as Jamie Benn, Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz. We also look at how the Stars have built around their core roster with key signings and trades, such as Joe Pavelski, Tyler Seguin and depth players like Mason Marchment and Matt Duchene. We also look at how the Stars are equipped to fill Joe Pavelski’s top six spot in the event that he retires after the season. All of this while also having No movement Clauses and No Trade Clauses just like the Wild!

  1. Listening to you rattle off the Stars stats and I see a balanced roster. There are no Freddy’s / Johansson’s in their top 3 lines, everyone seems to have 15-20 goals, 20-30 assists. Steel with 8 goals has doubled Freddy, yikes. The pick up of Pavelski was the start of the build up as I keep waiting for his play to slide with age – but he keeps producing. The one thing Dallas has had is the ability to avoid the major / multiple injury bug. They’ve had 1-2 players out but usually as staggered intervals and not season ending or with their top players. Dallas has the money, one more year and we’re close to an even playing field and can actually go out and add an O’Reilly type of FA. They have drafted extremely well and obviously have a solid player development program injecting youth into the lineup. I do feel the Wild are on a similar path, just a year or two behind due to the cap.

  2. The Wild's current roster has 8 Minnesota draft picks, compared to Dallas with 11 of their own draft picks. Is this really significant? Lots of variables here. When a player is drafted, they are a prospect with odds of making the NHL roster decreasing as you get deeper in the draft. To me, #1) you need to hit at the expected rate for your early round picks, #2) you need a "surprise" or home-run pick in the mid or later rounds now and again (like Kaprizov), and #3) don't reach in the early rounds – take the best talent you can (look at what the Wild did last year – Charlie Stramel, was a reach IMO compared to other players on the board). Finally, what role does the organization's player development approach have on the hit rate of prospects once the draft is finished? What are the teams with the highest prospect hit rate doing differently, if anything, than other teams? Pretty tough to evaluate but one thing's for sure – we should expect a payoff soon if Judd is the guru everyone believes him to be.
