BIG Questions after Arizona Coyotes LEAK arena renderings

The Arizona Coyotes leaked a group of renderings on their app Tuesday afternoon that could be for the arena proposal.

The Coyotes have been actively seeking land at the northwest corner of the Loop 101 freeway and Scottsdale Road.

The renderings show the internal and external factors of the arena and follow the entertainment district that owner Alex Meruelo had wanted in his Tempe proposal.

Last week, the Arizona State Land Department Board of Appeals unanimously approved the $68.5 million appraisal of 95 acres of land sought by the Coyotes. The 4-0 approval took less than two minutes.

  1. Why do they want to build the adjoining venue and the big indoor thoroughfare as well? Wonder how much the cost of just the hockey arena would be vs. the arena + other venue + thoroughfare between the two buildings? Agree it's odd they released the images, then pulled them. If it was unintentional, you'd think they would've removed them much quicker. If they want to get people in the area excited and thus supportive of the proposal, it would be logical to leave it up.

  2. Dude why are you taking these renderings so literal?? They are a broad stroke just to give an idea of what can be there. I live right by this site–your comments are stupid bro. Why are you even talking about parking and ingress/egress? You must be bored to ramble on about this and die your beard dude—you need a manager.

  3. I bet the two venues plus thoroughfare will end up costing at least $4B as there apparently aren't even utilities (electricity, sewage, water, etc.) on that property. Good guess that the smaller "arena" may be the practice rink facility.

  4. The planning looks a lot like The Domain in Austin. If that’s the case they’re going to need 3+ parking structures which would take up a lot of the 95 acres.

  5. I wish that desert diamond would get over themselves and just allow the coyotes to play there for a 3 year lease instead of staying at the mullet. That’s granted they win the land auction. If they don’t win it (I don’t like it as a coyotes fan) but I think you have the most legitimate argument then to relocate out of Phoenix. Though I don’t think they’re going to lose this auction, especially if Alex’s stake at ownership is on the line. He’d drop 200-300 million to win the auction if that’s the case

  6. I'm going with the release of the renders was an accident – no reason to show your bidding competition what is viable on the site. I predict the 2nd building is a sports book/casino with restaurants and shops along the path between the it and the arena. I think the residential is the money making part of the venture. Lot's of hit end condos and apartments already going in up there by the Princess. So the arena will start right away, but I think parts of the residential also start at the same time, but likely phase releases of what gets built.

  7. I can't see the Coyotes winning this bid. This is the same city that sabotaged the Tempe vote, so why would we they accept this bid within their own city? What reason does the city and its taxpayers have to trust a team that was just kicked out of Glendale for being delinquent on their rent payments? I truly believe that's the main reason why the Tempe vote failed. And considering that this is the same franchise that filed for bankruptcy not too long ago, I doubt they have the money to build this. They will probably start asking for taxpayer money during construction when they know it'll be too late for the city to refuse. Yet, even if that doesn't happen, maintaining this entertainment district will come from public and government money, so the city still has no reason to trust the Coyotes. I hate to say it, but I'm convinced that they will be in Utah come 2026. 3 more years in a college arena at best in an era where delays are the norm? No way the NHL accepts that in my eyes.

  8. The only reason the Coyotes are still in Arizona is Gary Bettman. He even had the NHL take over the team in 2009 when then-owner Jerry Moynes wanted out and the NHL couldn't find someone to buy the team and keep them in Arizona. During the interview with Gary Bettmann at All-Star Weekend, it seemed quite apparent that Bettman is (finally) running out of patience re. a new arena, and I suspect time is running short before he initiates an effort to move the team to SLC.

  9. I do hope this works out for the Coyotes and their fans. It’s long past time for this to be settled. I like that it’s (so far) being developed with private funding.

  10. just trying to figure out the amount of land needed for parking .just for game nights , rule of thumb seems to be 125 +/- cars per acre ,[ sq. footage] not multi-level , the drawing shows there are 2 multi-level areas ,using approx. 9 acres or so in rough est. & being generous with 6 total levels =1,000 parking spots , w/ 3 people /car = 3,000 fans , so 5,000 more parking places needed , not to even say where is the parking for the 10,000 permanent residents in the hi-rise apts , & all the parking area needed for the restaurant & shopping district areas ? asking for a friend .

  11. Copy and Paste:

    – The Arizona Coyotes have lost $115.2 million USD between 2013 and 2022 (according to Forbes Business of Hockey). That is more than any other team in the NHL over that same period.

    – In the past 28 years the Arizona Coyotes are at a NET LOSS.

    – The Coyotes can't stay at the Footprint center because it converted to basketball exclusively.

    – The Arizona Coyotes were also sued by the city of Phoenix twice for interfering with zoning laws in accordance with planned flight paths.

    – The team was sued by city of Glendale for not paying taxes – On December 3 2021, the Arizona Department of Revenue slapped the Arizona Coyotes with a tax lien.

    – The Coyotes were rejected by the cities of Scottsdale (Los Arcos mall site in 1995-1996)

    – the Coyotes were rejected by the city of Tempe (May 16 2023).

Coyotes still have to find a location to build an area. And purchase the land… (they are talking about a parcel of land in Scottsdale, but nothing has happened as of March 13 2024 – and that site is in a BAD location apparently very little hockey fans/money in that area.

My understanding (and this was told to me by Coyotes fans) ONLY the east valley of Phoenix has a lot of hockey fans.

This proposed site (Loop 101 West of Scottsdale Road) is FAR, FAR NORTHEAST…not even close to where people are. It is not even in the East Valley anymore, it is in the North, it is not in a highly populated area. And those were some of the main issues with drawing fans to Glendale (in the West Valley…a lack of fans).

Furthermore, "the 100 acre plot of land currently has no road access to the site…they have not spoken about how they will secure the water rights for the current and future needs of a project of this size"…

To build a brand new arena from scratch, takes on average 3 years of construction (assuming there are NO delays).

It sounds like there has to be a PUBLIC AUCTION FOR THE LAND FOR A MINIMUM OF 10 WEEKS to allow other people a chance to purchase the land. And then the ARENA PLANS have to be approved by the government, they don't just let you build whatever you want.

The auction will START on March 14th 2024….the land must be put up for auction for minimum of 10 weeks…May 23 2024 soonest without delays (HOWEVER they actually announced this week the auction will probably end in June 2024).

The realistic soonest possible date for a new arena construction. would be June 2027. (2027-2028 NHL season – where will the Coyotes play until then? They can't play at Mullet until then.)

Therefore…The Arizona Coyotes are 100% relocating.

Why spend $500 million on another arena, which may or may not work out? That would be crazy. To build this team a new arena would be insane. to pump $500 million into an arena, while an arena in Glendale EXISTS and the team lost $115.2 million in the past ten years – you will NEVER RECOUP YOUR LOSSES IN ARIZONA.

List of NHL sized arenas in cities without NHL teams:

    – Videotron Centre – Quebec City, Quebec

    – MODA Center – Portland, Oregon

    – Fiserv Forum – Milwaukee, Wisconsin

    – Delta Center – Salt Lake City, Utah

    – Toyota Center – Houston, Texas

    – FirstOntario Centre – Hamilton, Ontario (currently renovating)

    – Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse – Cleveland, Ohio

    – T-Mobile Center (Sprint Center) – Kansas City, Missouri

Every single one of those cities are more deserving of an NHL city than Phoenix (or Atlanta for that matter).

Some of these locations would ACTUALLY generate revenue for the NHL unlike the Arizona Coyotes.

  12. Well at least we know that whatever the Coyotes manage to build (that is very much in doubt) won’t be a retractable domed arena on 9 acres. Coyotes just need to relocate to Houston.

  13. I have a sinking feeling this plan is not truly for the coyotes, but better suited for a long term project such as, for an expansion franchise…

  14. The plan they had in place to tear down the dump in Tempe, Arizona and put an arena in its place was an actual good plan they just never pushed it and proved to people that it was for the good and to help keep the Coyotes there, and the opposition who wanted it not to happen pushed the “NO” vote a hell of a lot more and it caused them to spiral into what do we do now and here we are today🤦‍♂️ what a shame, if this doesn’t work please enough would be enough move the team and get them in an NHL arena with a fan base that will actually support them 100%

  15. The thing with all this, they can't even sell out the mullet with coyotes fans right now. And they plan to build this for that team? I sincerely doubt that. I think the team is a way for them to get the land to develop on, to make money off the rest of it, I wouldnt be shocked if the arena winds up being 1/3 of the size shown here.

  16. If the NHL has so much swag, why haven’t they exerted their power, along with the Coyotes current owners to use any of the existing facilities other than Mullet Arena, until this situation is resolved? Have they burned their bridges that badly that nobody wants them?

  17. Maybe this will get Phx to stop invest in a proper public transit.
The St Louis Cardinal benefit hugely by have a subway right to the door.

  18. If there's one thing on all this that I'm absolutely 100% certain of, it's that the giant "Phoenix" wordmark on the roof is a placeholder for a corporate sponsor.
