Are the Winnipeg Jets CONTENDERS? (Trade Deadline Review)

The 2024 NHL Trade Deadline is complete, and the Winnipeg Jets made one of the bigger trades, acquiring Tyler Toffoli. With Toffoli, along with the other additions of Sean Monahan and Colin Miller, the Winnipeg Jets seem primed for playoff hockey. With that, one question remains… is this team a Stanley Cup Contender?

  1. This is now a team that is easily 4 lines deep and already the best team in the league defensively. They do seem slightly distracted lately and the chemistry seems slightly off as well but I think that's expected with 3 additions now. Let's face it defense wins championships and with this strength they are definitely cup contenders now. If this team goes deep I think the Jets will sign both Tofolli and Miller to 1 to 2 year deals with a slight increase but to do so we'll lose some more guys to waivers. This is going to be a fun ride! The Jets still have a chance at the Presidents Trophy which would be great to have home ice advantage in the playoffs. Let's go Jets let get that cup back in Canada and in Winnipeg!!!

  2. Don't get cocky Jets fans. Canucks brought in Elias Lindholm and immediately went into a month long tail spin. The chemistry was off from the start. We're coming around now but all those struggles were from the addition of just one new player not several. Expect an adjustment period and there really is no way to tell for sure how these moves will pan out. Good luck. You have a great team even if we did get the better of you on Saturday. 😉

  3. They are easily a top contender cuz everyone knows the Jets always bring it during the playoffs (remember when they swept Edmonton as underdogs?). And yes, a lot of people make reference to how they lost to Las Vegas last year, but Las Vegas won the cup, so technically, every team lost to them. There's no shame in losing to the top team.

  4. I miss Tyler in MTL. Such a smart and clutch player. You guys got him for NOTHING seriously.

As for Monahan, I'm sure you guys see why he was beloved by Flames fans for years, and for every single games he played here in MTL and been part of the organisation in general. I don't think fans here ever loved like that a player that stayed such a small amount of time here. He's really special on and off the ice.
Why did the Flames gave it up along with a FIRST round pick as a cap dump is INSANE to me… WTH seriously!
Because of him and Hughes, he gifted not one but TWO first round picks AND veteran help for our young centers/core while being here.

Without him, IDK if Suzuki would look so good right now, against the first line of all other teams day in day out, now a ppg guy, and seldom mentioned ironman streak (the rate of injuries has been historic last year, and quite bad this year too, but even when playing with AHL players last year he still improved, and never gets injured which is some kind of black magic here in MTL). I don't remember him missing a single game EVER.

This year he finally looks and produce like a first line center while being a beast defensively; IDK if the improvement would have been so dramatic without good ol' Monahan's helping out.

Take care of him please you guys.
And IMHO, as for Canadian teams in contention, the Jets have been an asset management masterclass these past 2 years. Especially the PLD trade to an apparently bunch of idiots in LA (GLAD Hugues told you guys he wouldn't pay anything for PLD, and good for you guys to maximize the HELL out of a player that even when producing was a defensive liability). It's a team that has find ways to keep being in the convo for the playoff and the West.
Your D core and goaltending is great. You have a balanced team that can beat any other on a best of 7. I know a team that likes to call itself "Canada's team" that should take a page from you lol, and unlike the aforementioned big market and star powered Leafs, you're no going to get humilated like they while during the playoffs, as cap is well distributed instead of overpaying BIG TiME for the most unclutched core of elite players in league's history (yes, it's backed up by stats lol :P).

I have Texas and Florida has 2nd and 3rd team, but were I cheering up for any other Canadian team, the Jets would be it. The way you guys keep rebounding out of disadvantageous situations all the while being one of the most popular NTC team destination for players, wow…
You're like OTT if it was 10 times better managed, had a freaking soul/identity, and you know, some kind of plan to build something (so NOT them, but you know what I mean… Small market Canadian team that do not have the luxury of mismanaging like NYC could for instance, as UFAs aren't lining up to live in WPG, so gaps have to be filled by good asset management).
I know Monahan was worth more at his ridiculously low cap hit than a late 1st and the conditional pick we will never see probably, but he was promise to be traded to good playoff team where he could shine (how he keeps doing will dictate his next contract as a UFA, so it's a big deal for him). Plus risking to wait further along the TDL just to squeeze the returns a little bit more would have been too risky because of injuries.

Bravo you guys. I hope you go DEEP this yeah :D. Definitely hope you can beat the defending champs along the way; not going to be easy but with a disciplined well oiled team game it's possible!!

P.S. please ship us our toast loving Monahan after your run please 😉 Or give him a forever home in WPG (I don't think he'll ask too much for his next contract as long as it's a longer term one; which is why I'd like for us to resign him for somelike like 4x5M or something like that).

  5. Complainers are going to complain. It never ceases to amaze me how fickle some fans are. One loss after being ravaged by the flu and on a back to back. Relax. Which top team hasn’t had a bad game in the last month against a team they should have beat? Nothing really matters until the playoffs.
