RED WINGS FREE FALL, RAYMOND & CHIAROT SCRUM, & NHL EXPANSION – Winged Wheel Podcast – Mar. 10, ’24

It has only gotten worse for the Detroit Red Wings.

Tune in as we start by discussing the 6th consecutive loss (this time to the Buffalo Sabres) for Derek Lalonde’s squad, including Lyon, Reimer, Petry, and Chiarot’s rough nights, Raymond making a small impact from Kane & Fabbri, Detroit being dominated by Benson & Co., another slow, weak effort, & more (3:55). After that, an updated look at Hockeytown’s playoff chances, upcoming schedule and implications with Larkin gone (16:35).

We then discuss the minor scuffle that broke out in practice between Lucas Raymond and Ben Chiarot, whether it’s a good or bad thing for the team, & what to look for going forward (22:10). Then, overall thoughts on the season as a whole, whether frustration is an overreaction based on expectations for the season, & what’s ahead for Steve Yzerman (Edvinsson, Johansson, Kasper, or Mazur in the future?) (32:00).

After that, a debate on the NHL expansion question, as Atlanta has jumped into the mix with Utah & other prospective locations: how many teams is too many (46:10)?

All of that & lots more before we take your questions and comments during our Overtime segment (1:01:55) – enjoy!

  1. What bothers me so much about this team is the lack of passion. They glide around the ice and do not skate hard. I have watched the coyotes play 30 games this season and although they went on a 14 game skid…they outskated, outworked and overall looked better than the teams they lost to.(got goalied and their own goalie sucked) i yet tune into the yotes because they are fast, fun to watch and are legit dawgs. They skate hard. I would take their roster over ours if we could put redwing jerseys on them. Guenther, Cooley, Keller…what i will not tolerate or watch is a team of heartless guys whom make millions a year to pout. That is the redwings right now. They simply do not care. Please waive, trade or buyout half of this roster please.

  2. Steve Yzerman has given out long term contracts to Chiarot, Copp, & Holl and even TRADED FOR Petry. He is losing his mind. This team has zero athleticism, zero heart it's pathetic. I would rather be the Sabres and have such a young team than what we currently have. The fact we have ZERO ROOKIES on this team to begin with is so disappointing.

  3. Petry's dad played for the Tigers! who gives a fuck. Copp is from Michigan! who gives a fuck.

  4. Yzerman said at start of the season that he felt this still WASN'T a playoff team and not ready. If you've paid attention enough you shouldn't be shocked that they have shit themselves again like last year when they were in the driver seat and that 8 point lead was not big like a couple of you guys said it was a few episodes ago and one of you thought they were a playoff lock 😂.Wings are still a ways away from being where they need to be.

  5. Did anyone see the 4-5 min video from nhl network on YouTube about how bad red wing’s defense was last game? It would be funny if it wasn’t our team…

  6. Bringing in a bunch of 30yr olds and thinking your rebuild is ahead of Buffalo is soooooo funny.

  7. Brad and co. pulling their best impression of the Allen Iverson practice press conference speech. What are we talking about…? Practice!? 🤣

  8. Between the seasoned veteran signings and hometown boy signings, you'd think this team shouldn't be as inconsistent and uncompetitive as they are on a game to game basis. Honestly even shift to shift some of these veterans should be better than they are

  9. DET vs BUF was the worst game of the season! No motivation, poor passing, poor defense and I don't want to say that the goalkeepers were good in the game but in relation to the entire team they were the better players! The only players that showed me light on the horizon were: Raymond and Määttä (and I'm not a big fan of him)

I find myself in a mix of emotions and thoughts. On the one hand, I want SY to continue doing it, but he has to admit that he made a lot of bad signings.
And while we're already complaining and naming names, Copp, Holl, Fischer, Fabbri, Petry, Gosisbehere and Perron have to go (no contract extensions over 20 million would be available). I don't want to see these players on the team anymore! Too expensive, too ineffective, such players in the NHL are standard these days and can be found cheaper. I say this specifically so that we can and must bring in another top player. Someone who inspires the others in the team (mentally and physically).
Sure we need a goalkeeper and our defense needs to be revamped, but in my opinion we have major weaknesses in fielding two top lines (despite the young talent coming up). It sounds strange at first, but it is true!
The third and fourth lines will work well with the young talent and the remaining players

Lalonde also has to face criticism! At the beginning of the season he had strange lineups. But people have overlooked the fact that the formation of the team needs to be tried out. No system was ever recognizable! Until today! Our 4th line (Fabbri Fischer Copp) is currently the best paid in the NHL (over 10 million)
My ratings of the Red Wings weren't high, but I at least wanted them to make the playoffs!
There is still hope, but with every subsequent game like the last one against BUF, my hope loses more and more

  10. These are the results of a NON lottery team. They need about 2 or 3 great scoring forwards that only can be added in the draft.

Once Larkin nears 30 years old then what? The rebuild will have to be reset again finding a 1C.

We had to face the reality SY tried to jumpstart this rebuild with risky UFA signings the past 2 summers to put fans in the stands.

This roster is not built for longevity without more scoring threats.

  11. Can’t have one driver of the bus. Yzerman has a ton of work to do this summer ( nothing new for him). The defense needs an overhaul and I believe we need a superstar. Depth is great; but contenders have a mix of depth and top end talent.

  12. Gutless, uncompetitive, soft losers. That is this team, “led” by a take no accountability bum coach. It’s glaringly obvious they have no confidence right now as well. I resent this team for likely pushing Patrick Kane out of the organization.

  13. Larkin has to be feeling so let down. This team is loaded with veterans. It seems insane to think this can even happen.

  14. Now is the time to bring in MCDC.. he can save the wings like he saved the lions. He will get the boys fired up and ready to go. I mean seriously newsy needs to call him and specifically say "I need you to come pump my guys up we need a spark"

There better be a camera in the room

  15. Detroit needs a good locker room brawl. Get whatever it is out of their system. I think Uncle Fester lost the room. Gotta win these three home games

  16. Generally, I do not think Charot has had a great season despite what many have said. I think he shoots too much at ill advised situations and, just by throwing the puck at the net frequently, his counting statistics are up. His defense is still atrocious (reference Tuch's goal for an example). That being said, the primary assist on Charot's goal Tuesday was from Lucas Raymond. This makes me think the practice scrum was not personal and won't carry over as animosity between the two.
