Rest: The Canucks Secret Weapon In 2011

The Vancouver Canucks are on a roll right now. They are in the midst of an incredibly tough stretch of games, but have won 4 in a row! To reward his players, Rick Tocchet has cancelled practice and given them 2 days off. The data is clear, professional athletes need rest periods during the season in order to heal and prevent injuries.

In 2011, rest and recovery was sacred for the Canucks. Mike Gillis was a visionary when it came to sport science. If there was a competitive edge, he would find it. In fact, he was so analytical that the league cried to Bettman. I cover all of this in this video.

  1. This is something Rick Tocchet and his staff really need to account for when the playoffs are just around the corner. With Demko leaving the second period against the Jets, it left me to conclude that Demko is being overplayed. Schneider played 25 games while Luongo played 60 in 2010-2011.

  2. Rest is the most underrated factor that barely anyone talks about. When i work 8 hours at work and don't get the proper rest and sleep, my performance the next day suffers and I'm not able to give good quality service to not only my customers but it shows to my coworkers as well and in turn it affects everything and everyone at the workplace, same concept can be applied to NHL hockey games. Resting gives you optimal performance not just for sports but everyday life as well! That being said, you would hope the canucks have people specializing in this category for the team right?? Like what mike gillis did? Its an investment worth making

  3. Awesome video! I think this seasons secret weapon is the coaching staff. The structure they are now playing with, has layers of puck support and I love the buy-in from the players

  4. Players wanting to get adequate rest when they have to travel the most

  5. First time viewer. I've always suspected rest was more important than practice for top tier players. A video like this is innovative and informative. Thanks~

  6. Strangely enough, the Canucks have always lead the league in technology and new ideas. Using computers to scout, video tape review, etc, etc.

  7. Rest = recovery. I’ve heard Tocchet & Mgmt is all over the science and significance of team readiness hence their primary focus of one game at a time. The proof is in the numbers they’re putting up! I wonder if they’re using HRV stats to measure recovery vs performance? Great vid! Thank you. 💪👍

  8. This is the kinda stuff that made Mike Gillis my favorite GM… after Pat Quinn. Quinn would've never gone this far. He would've preached toughness and grit till he was blue in the face… old school rings true while science adds a finishing touch 👌
