NJ Devils 3 Way Trade Tanev To Dallas: What about Markstrom & Hanifin? Is Fitz Done?!?

The New Jersey Devils got involved in a 3 way trade that sends defenseman Chris Tanev from the Calgary Flames To Dallas Stars.

The Devils ship out Goaltending Prospect Cole Brady and Retain 50% of Tanev’s contract in exchange for a 4th Round Pick.

Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerald essentially “bought” a 4th Rounder with some of our available Cap Space.

Is this part of a larger plan?!?

Is Jacob Markstrom and/or Noah Hanifin on the horizon?!?

Is Tom Fitzgerald done making moves and this was it?!?

I discuss the possibilities and more in this video.

Let me know what you guys think in the comments.

  1. I would like to believe that it is a part of a larger move but I also think as you mentioned that he is also likely continuing to be patient and seeing what happens on this trip. I’m just worried he’s putting his eggs in a single basket (like Markstrom) and then finding out they won’t be available or someone else made the move first who was more willing to pull the trigger

  2. I don’t think this is part of anything bigger, or any sort of precursor to a different deal. Devils fans thinking this is the first domino of some sort of blockbuster are hopelessly naive and optimistic.

I like the deal, but it’s nothing more than a savvy move by Fitz to turn unused cap space into a “free” draft pick.

The Devils will not be buyers at this deadline. Say it with me, delusional Devs fans: THE DEVILS WILL NOT BE BUYERS. The season is lost. Fitz waited too long to make a meaningful difference. Toffoli will be traded, maybe others. It sucks but it’s the harsh reality.

  3. Wouldn't be surprised if Fitz found Lou's old napping spot and this will be the only move he makes. If that is the case, he should pack his shit and go. He needs to go after Saros ASAP.

  4. There are more teams looking to offload goalies than there are contenders who need one. If we do acquire a goalie, we should do so at the absolute last possible second. The idea of losing a first and a prospect for a 75 year old goalie with term left should be an absolute last resort.

  5. I wonder if Fitz did that so he could keep an eye on Tanev and possibly get him to sign with us in the offseason??

  6. Great trade. We get a pick and we make a West coast team stronger to beat the Rangers in the finals if they don't choke before that. Now we need to trade Toffoli to the Oilers or Canucks.

  7. I'd like to thank our cherished s̶p̶o̶n̶s̶o̶r̶ partner, RWJBarnabas Health. Their unwavering & generous support has lent us the ability to purchase this 4th round pick 2 years from now. We simply couldn't have done it without you – and that's why we proudly display your name on our chest. 😑

I think 'stupid little moves' is what to expect this deadline with the cap space, unfortunately. We'll see.

I'm probably in the minority, but I'd like to add Markstrom as a two year bridge to the next option (if the price is right). His 6 mil is tolerable for his proven performance, I don't see his play falling off a cliff while this contract wraps up, and he'd likely be a lot cheaper to acquire than Saros – while still getting someone with lengthy experience as opposed to the bargain bin options. It buys two more years to see if Daws/Schmid can develop and take the 1A in 26-27 and beyond. LGD

  8. Hey everyone, for what its worth, being that the flames have been playing well while getting rid of some of our quality UFA players with still Hannifan to go, im honestly thinking that we are keeping marky to keep the mood in the locker room competitive as we are inches out of 8 place…
With that said i wouldnt be surprised one bit that the devils picks up Marky in the offseason and maybe a little reason why new jersey helped out a little on this trade knowing so….
Just saying and if sooo you guys will absolutely love him for the next 2 seasons, he's been by far our MVP this year…hands down!!!

  9. After Conroys statement that he’s not parting ways with Markstrom this season, I would look to move on from Calgary. Crap thing to do by a GM after another team helped you retain salary the day before. Calgary fans must think he’s the greatest GM after that statement. Seems like Futz, yes Futz, is giving up on the season after keeping Lindy for too long as HC also.

  10. Calgary's reportedly no longer interested in trading Markstrom by the TDL unless you give them an offer they can't refuse. If he ever does become available, it'll likely be in the offseason.

  11. I don’t know what to say about this. It’s hard to guess what’s going on in the heads of the Devils management. Are they bulking up for offseason trades? Are they getting ready to make a move now? Have they cashed the season in since players are still playing injured and not bs injuries like a sore toe or bumps and bruises knowing the team isn’t going anywhere in the post season. The way I see it is that they are cashing in the season.
Agree or disagree with it, I’m just hoping that they don’t fuck around during the offseason like they did during the season and pick up the role players we need, get a reliable goaltender and get the heads of the remaining team out of their ass’s.
Jack and Luke better put on some muscle this offseason also. I remember when Brian Gionta got into the league and I thought he was tiny. These bros are on another level. Stay away from the Jersey Shore and hit the gym.
With that said, I’ll take a double digit win heater in the next month and all the drama of this season will magically disappear for me, 😂🎉
    LGD!

  12. Gotta realize how this works. If team is standing pat they will acquire assets for the money they can use this year
It’s a good long term play

  13. The plan was not to trade Markstrom as he has 2 more years in his deal, not like the last players they trade that where UFA at the end of this season and they where not going to resign any of them. Now why keep Markstrom, will the hop that he can be the Monitor to Wolf. Which they want to be up in NHL for the full season. The Flames are not in a rebuilding, but more a retooling. Also I heard that the Flames don't want to retain his salary since it is 2 years deal. So those could be the why they will not want to trade Markstrom.
