Warrior Spirit | Part 2

Warrior Spirit | Part 2

The following is a presentation of am240 kfmo sports our story continues with the Valley Catholic Warriors off to a hot 2 and0 start to the 66 season having not allowed a single point but the unscored upon season would face its toughest test with a destiny altering moment in week

Three as the Warriors lead 40 to nothing with their backup defense in an ill time penalty would set up visiting welston with first and goal from the 9 yd line the other team on our second team defense got real close to the goal line we basically put ourselves in there was

No I mean we just went out it was just an automatic response nobody told us to go and nobody told us not to go we just kind of went out there and get out of here the players on the field at that time wanted to come off and let us come

In they’re the ones that made that happen I the the the the second side players on defense wanted us to be in there to stop the score basically all of us stood up and said we’re going and uh I I don’t remember what yard line it was

On but it was inside the 20 for sure we just decided on his own we all jumped up at once and I don’t think anybody said anything just went out there and ran those kids off the field and Coach Tommy didn’t say anything that was I was going

To say a while ago that he allowed stuff like that we stopped them and I believe they fumbled and we recovered the ball told Ralph we’re going in and he let us go in I mean if he he could have stopped us if he wanted to and he said

After the m game he said you know when I switched you guys in and out second side out in you guys in that’s when I made the decision to go for an undefeated or an unscored upon season we had decided at that point at that game that was our

Main goal for the season we knew we could score points but could we keep people from scoring we started talking more about it after that night we started you know amongst ourselves and didn’t want to get too bigheaded thinking what we’re going to try to accomplish but uh we started talking

About that hey we you know let’s keep this going as you can we got together and a meeting we talked about it and they said let’s do it let’s see if we can make it happen let’s see how far we can go gosh that was just

A bunch of young men just getting fired up I Mean we just all got together and said we’ve gone three games I think we ought to we need to try to go unscored on if we can and just talked to Coach and he agreed you aren’t really getting to play you ought you’re getting punished for being pretty good so we

Just that’s when after that we got to play defense the meeting the meeting which followed an impulsive decision where the 1966 Valley Catholic Warriors set their sights on a goal which today would be considered an impossible accomplishment a full 10-game season without allowing a single point we know

These young men were able to accomplish that goal but there was one more key element that fueled their drive for an undefeated season one more young man who wasn’t with them but helped provide the motivation needed to reach that goal discover the ultimate destination for wellness and fun at the St Genevie

Season he gave us the incentive that we were going to dedicate the season to Jack Rich good kid you you know we were good friends and then all of a sudden I forget what he had or what he got he was the guard right beside me and at practice that one

Particular night he was sloughing off and he didn’t get his job done and I actually called himit Down On It junior year after the homecoming game he was telling me this Tom I’m not feeling good at all I’m not feeling good well Jack what’s know I don’t know he ended up

Having a a kidney disease his family had a history of uh has a liver kidney disease and uh he passed away and uh he was he was one of our good buddies and again you grew up with it uh it got us all off guard because

Nobody knew the man was sick least of all me he was a motivator too I mean we wanted to to do things for him because he wasn’t here anymore and uh you know it was it was a really sad occasion while we lost since we’re dedicating this season

To Jack let’s go un let’s go underscored upon let’s go undefeated you guys can do it you had the tools we played with him in mine that got us going I guess the team built the strength for the group I mean we knew each other and obviously we were

In school together and class together but as a team we did almost everything together best friend on on the team oh back then it was probably Kenny grass Jean F I would say it would be Dave probably Glenn Arnold best friend oo I had lots well Glenn Arnold was my best man

At my wedding um Dave rsum and I were very close because we used to have to beat each other up all the time at prac we had the biggest personality um foxy and I’m not sure if that’s uh how the answer that fox myself there was no big

Personality funny guy I’m telling you I’m telling you there wasn’t Kenny Swagger buar I I think Tom duny probably you got finish talking to Dave there Dave I almost feel like this is one of those where if you can’t Point them out it’s you no no

No no I I don’t know I wasn’t and Dave ripson I don’t think I don’t know the best player on the on our team the the the nucleus that all that we all you know run off of probably mad hall or quarterback probably foxy if I was

Picking my first pick well Carl Bowser he got he lik it to be Mr Football so I guess he was the best player I guess Matt Dave quick I know his capabilities my favorite memory is the last game of the season after we fin when we all got together I guess the final

Game we had a we were anticipating or it was anticipated by someone that we were going to win the match taking the picture after this Frederick Town game it was a great memory but made a cake for us and we had had a little party in the dressing room

Before we even changeed out of our uniforms the butt is that we couldn’t play more the Brotherhood of the 1966 Valley Catholic Warriors lasts to this day and that unique Brotherhood would factor in what made this team so special and Elevate them to new heights had is

There there’s pretty good athletes they’re fast and strong they were country boys and they had a good head on their shoulder and I think dedication is maybe a good word to throw in there as well because we realized what happened the year before when we didn’t have the winning

To undefeated season we lost by one game and there’s really nobody to blame for that but it happened and we didn’t want that to H happen again I think where we maybe stood out is that we really trusted each other all believed in one another I went on to play college

Ball and you would have some of that at the school that went you’d have some of but you didn’t have you didn’t have the whole team like we had here you see any team that does a team sport they got the comp commodity everybody working together they’re going

To have great success you know you got to have everybody you got to have all 11 on the field got to be working together I mean if not you’re not going to have it I guess the team built the strength for the group I mean we knew each other

And obviously we were in school together and class together but as a team we did almost everything together even to this day I mean we get together a bunch of us get together at the Elks up in St Louis uh we have sandwich Monday and Foxy and Dave ripson Glenn Arnold Jean

Figgy uh self uh we all meet there now and then somebody else will come from the team what does it mean to have this story of you and your friends in the 19660 season told I was wondered it to be known that hey we were a special group of guys who

Really got together and made from our freshman year on we were we felt special it was a a Life opening experience it was you know this was when we were still kids and what we did that year exposed us to where we were going in life who

Don’t know about us our story sometimes and they just look in amazement and didn’t know that it happened and it’s a shame that our story never was told I mean it’s it’s neat I mean it’s I I’ll talk about it anytime anybody wants to talk about it I’ll talk

About it I’m interested in what’s going to be written and uh who might be wanting to read it uh or view it if it’s a video it’s something I’ll never forget about I mean yeah I’m 74 years old I’m not going to forget about in the next 25

Years 30 or not 30 but we shall see we felt special we were going to work to do whatever it took and we we did I mean some good people we were all were it was a good group of men good group of young men Mueller’s tire and auto service in
