We finally have some juicy Vancouver Canucks news to go over, all sparked by a few interviews yesterday. Canucks GM Jim Benning was interviewed yesterday on Sportsnet 650, where he spoke about Nils Hoglander, and a Loui Eriksson trade. We also had a quote from him on Olli Juolevi, which explains why, in the Canucks’ opinion, he’s more NHL-ready than most would think. Furthermore, we had a crazy good interview by Craig Button on TSN 1040 where he absolutely went off defending Canucks top prospect Vasili Podkolzin.

We go over what

  1. I think the Canucks should trade Eriksson and sutter for a 6th, and a 5th. It will give the Canucks enough cap space to sign either petterson or Hughes. I think they will trade them to a team who has lots of cap space, also the team they could go to would get some players for their bottom six. I’m predicting petterson wil want 9M and Hughes will ask for 6M.

  2. I have no use for anything Button says about anything. If I really liked a young player and Button came out and said the kid was going to be a star, I would immediately think that I was wrong about the kid being good and that he will probably never play in the NHL.

  3. I'm all for Juolevi, Rafferty, Rathbone, Höglander, Podkolzin, and any other newbies who can make the cut. Problem is, there's too many players for not enough spots. Assuming these 5 players make the team, who doesn't play, and more importantly, what do you do with these players? No one will take these bloated contracts of bottom 6 players without a high draft pick or prospect going back. Frankly, I don't blame them.

  4. With a flat cap and a rollback on salary/contracts. If we return to play this season, we’re looking at cash flexibility getting prospects into games.

  5. This is exactly why he let players walk and didn't reach for any signings. (Except for the necessary one in schmidt, unless joulevi or Rafferty turn out to be studs) the canucks have players ready to compete or make the jump into the nhl in the next couple years. There needs to be space on the roster. Im happy he's standing pat while all these other teams have made signings that will look terrible in 3 years.

  6. Thanks Man, this was great. Just what I like to hear. It is like these kids were born to be Canucks. And Button could not have said it better.

  7. I don’t understand why the canucks can’t trade Erickson to a team with tons of cap space? His actual salary is one or two million, the cap hit is the issue. The canucks could offer to cover some of, if not all of, the salary…..freeing up six million cap space!
