I wouldn't have McDavid in the top five either. Yes he had a ton of offense with a lot of points. But without Evander Kane he was a -2 to a +2. The Oilers without Evander Kane were clinging to a wildcard spot in the weak west. Evander Kane comes back in Late Feb early March and the Oilers get on a heater and end up fighting for first place in the west. McDavid with Kane in the line up ended the season a +22. So I would have to say Evander Kane (200ft player) was the most important player on that team!!!
You can not talk about the east without talking about the Hurricanes. This off season they added exactly what they have always needed. No not a goal scorer!!!!! The Hurricanes play way to polite! They needed an agitator. They got bunting who can put up points. They needed toughness in a hard hitting defenseman to add to the best defensive squad in the NHL . They got Orlov who also has an offensive touch. They needed a guy to stand up for their stars. They got Lemeiux. The Hurricanes can score. They were above league average in scoring. The scoring stopped when they allowed other teams to walk all over them. The Hurricanes will have a better fourth line without two players that played one too many years in Stepon and Stastney. The Hurricanes will be rolling four dangerous lines this year with the best D- Core 9 True D-core in the league. How the heck was Jaccob Slavin 14 in the polls???????? Defense should not be rated by points as the main factor. Slavin/Burns and Pesce/Skjei were the top two defensive pairings in the NHL per Defensive numbers. The Hurricanes player continue to be the most underrated in the league. Not to mention the Hurricane fan base being underrated and the City of Raleigh being underrated as a hockey City! The youth hockey is tops in the US. Raleigh buildings are draped with Hurricane players and swag. The rinks are full! Remember the Raleigh / Triangle area is full of transplants from Northern US and Canada. Parents are moving to NC so their kids can play youth hockey in that program.
I respect the fact that everyone looks at New Jersey and New York but the East is going through Carolina. They have the best Defense in the league. They play a fast paced game and Jordan Staal with his line is one of the best shutdown lines in hockey. It is always funny how people constantly sleep on the Canes.
