[Charlie O’Connor] I wanted to share some news with everyone: Today is my last day at The Athletic. This was my decision, to be clear. I’m so grateful to The Athletic for giving me my first chance to cover the Flyers full-time, & I’m incredibly proud to have been part of TA for 6 great years.

Damn. A lot of unsubscribe buttons are about to be pressed in the Greater Philadelphia Area.

Glad Charlie left on his own terms rather than being laid off. Hopefully the Athletic can find a suitable candidate to replace him, even though I doubt anyone will be able to replicate his talents and insight.

What did that one guy know this week when he asked if Charlie still worked at the Athletic?

This sucks, since they’ve already lost so much of their Philly coverage, as well as the coverage to my college sports teams. It’s not worth $72, let alone the reduced $2 a month fee.

So the Athletic no longer has a flyers or Sixers beat. Really need to think about my subscription and if it’s worth the eagles, Phillies, and national coverage

Man I’m glad I saw this before I renewed my subscription

Well there goes any desire I have to resubscribe to the Athletic.

    God dammit.

When I originally signed on for The Athletic the coverage was so great. It’s been reduced so much that it feels vacant.

And yet it’s still better than most outlets, kinda says a lot about the state of sports media. Or just media in general.

Goddammit, I just renewed like 2 weeks ago, and Charlie is the primary reason I read. Fuck, man.

I knew when they got bought out that shit like this was going to go down. The good ones never seem to stick around.

If he’s still in the Flyers-verse, I’ll find a way to follow him.

Important note: if you were paying $72 annually like I was, if you go to cancel your subscription they will let you resubscribe for a “special offer” of $24 for the year. $24 is worth it for the eagles and phillies coverage IMO.

Fuck man this a killer, curious where he lands next. He is far and away the best writer on the flyers

Think there could be a new Philly sports media site about to launch because Charlie and Kyle Neubeck (PhillyVoice’s Sixers beat writer) both announced their exits from their current outlets within an hour of each other. Doesn’t feel like a coincidence and they’re both arguably the best on their respective beats, so a new site would be starting off on the right foot.

EDIT: Apparently, The Athletic is looking to hire a new Eagles beat writer so unless they’re adding a third one, either Bo Wulf or Zach Berman might be leaving and it’s apparently been hinted that ZB has something in the works, so that would give a theoretical new site top-tier writers in three of the major sports in the city.

Charlie was one of the *very* few writers covering the team who really seemed to understand the Flyers fanbase and the culture of the organization, while still being really smart and well versed about hockey in general. Gonna miss him on The Athletic, hope whatever content he starts producing next is easily accessible

Can only assume matt gelb will get the axe after the season for phillies coverage

  13. welp guess that means my sub to them is done
