I both loved and hated the Robert/Van Boxmeer trade. I agree and even did at the time… how do you split the French Connection…. But John was a top player in Buffalo for years as well. (and I loved hearing RJ's call when he scored).. The Ryan Miller trade.. I wanted Murray's head.. He was hired to "Build a team around Ryan Miller" and it seemed like 2 days later, he traded Ryan Miller… and a day later our Directory of Hockey Ops also left (Pat LaFontaine) who hired him. That deal marked the beginning of the rebuild that we are still on… I take a page from Corporal Klinger.. May the fleas of the thousand Camels infest his armpits..
The problem with the Hasek deal as I remember it… He had a NTC and he informed the GM that if they took too much from the roster of the team, he would use it.. he wanted them able to contend for a cup… I would have told him "Cool, we'll just keep you and you win or don't here… "
I cant say hasek because he forced us too trade him I think the Dave andreychuk was the worst too trade a 50 goal scorer for an ageing goalie was terrible.
The Peter McNab trade. Got crushed in that one. Not just points but the style McNab played that fit so well with Boston. We missed that a lot. Also didn't like the Gare/Schoenfeld trade for McCourt. Foligno was good but… Buffalo lost its heart/soul guys.
Great video.
BUT WAYNE! You missed the top two draft boners by the Sabres!
The worst Sabre trade EVER, was trading the great Peter McNab to the evil Bruins for Andre Savard!
McNab played 8 seasons for the wicked B's and scored 263 goals and was a plus 148. Savard played 7 seasons for my Sabres and scored 130 goals, and was a plus 67.
OR is this worse? Trading away Tom Barrasso (aged 23) and a future Stanley Cup winning hero, and a 3rd round pick for the steady Doug Bodger and Darrin Shannon (who got us 10 goals).
My analysis: Van Boxmeer for Robert was a very good trade for my Sabres. Boxy had five good seasons left in him (he was 26 at time of trade) and Robert was 30. Bowman fleeced Don Cherry.
Fuhr was never in my opinion a great goaler, a good one not great, and when we gave up Anderchuk, a first and Puppa, we was waaaay past his prime. But maybe his failures caused us to seek Hasek.
Kozlov had 14, yes 14 very good seasons … but not the one season he played for our Sabres….why?
The Ryan Miller trade, by Tim Murray was brilliant in my opinion. Ryan was on the downside of his Hall of Fame career and went limp in the playoffs for the Blues. Our management did not protect Carrier and he is still doing well for the Golden Showers. TM traded that first rounder to Lossipeg and the Jets got Jack Roslovic, who is now a solid player. Halak got traded for a lousy Capital goaler, Michal Neuvirth, and defenseman Rostislav Klesla. Klesla decided not to report to the Sabres to instead pursue playing professionally in Europe.
BUT we traded Chris Stewart to Minnesota for a second round pic who turned out to be …… UPL! I think Tim Murray was a good GM but he did not get enough time.
The first founder for Montour was from San Jose, and Anaheim picked the great Brayden Tracey who played one NHL game, and was a minus 1, but he is a kid, only 20.
The Sabers weren't going to put a good team in front of Dominic hasik so him staying was a waste of his talent. And I'm glad he went on to win two Stanley Cups for me the trading of Andrew Chuck was just ridiculous. Cooper was a better goalie than fewer and younger and we gave up a first round pick and a 50 goal scorer? That's the worst one for me. Trading were in April bear for a defenseman? Rick Martin for a handful of legos? Scotty Bowman might have been one of the best ever but it wasn't when he was here
Toronto in the early 90's had the devils own luck in trades, they built a cup contender by pulling down Buffalo's and Calgary's pants. I liked Fuhr alot but this was a terrible trade for the Sabres.
the O'Reilly gaff by Botterill was being discussed as the worst trade in NHL history by hockey "experts" just 2 years ago.
That Hasek trade was a head scratcher
Fuhr was great in locker room and got Sabres out of first rd for first time in 10 years. On Amerks Fuhr was amazing, he was so cool to talk to.
That Fuhr trade was terrible
Peter McNab trade to Boston for Andre Savard and the Dave Andreychuck trade to the Evil Empire , aka the laffs! I lost it when they traded Andreychuk for Grant Fuhr was as you said Wayne , was way passed his prime! 🤬🤬
Another BAD trade by Scotty Bowman , was the Danny Gare Bob Savue and Jim Schonfeld trade to Detroit for Dale Mccourt and Mike Foligno.
The worst trade was giving away Sauve, Schoney and Gare for Foligno and McCourt. My childhood ended that day. 😢. Also, trading away McNab for Savard was awful.
I still hate Bowman for that
Omg I'm famous again hahaha I think trading miller was the worst. We haven't been good since he left.
The feeling "around town", in my opinion, were trades like Miller, Hasek, O'Reilly, were about releasing good players from a crappy Sabres team, to teams with a chance at the Cup. Kind of in appreciation for what they did for the franchise, as best they could under each particular circumstance. Kind of a "good ole boy" thank you. Maybe I'm getting old and senile and don't remember the old days that well, but hockey still has honor. And I think that is part of it. Unwritten promises behind closed doors are still done with a handshake. I pray to the Great Net Minder in the sky these young guys get some of that. I think Dylan has that. One of the reasons I like him so much He's got an old timey hockey spirit in the young talented body.
2015 1st rounder from St.Louis was traded to Winnipeg later, and they drafted Jack Roslovic (25th).
Fun video Wayne, but since you are such an optimist, how about a video of our 7 best trades?!
Gratton for Briere, not too shabby.
i hated when we traded miller. he was my favorite player so it stung more
Where would you place the Tomas Vanek for Matt Moulson Trade? I'd say Kind Of Even
How about your Favorite Buffalo Sabres Trades that Helped Both Teams? I know that it's Usually A Win/Lose, but, it'd be Interesting And Unique
