Betting on him to score back then was quite literally a lock. Wow
ccafferata473
Boy he really fell off at age 29.
Altruistic_Ad466
26 year old Gretz was just trash apparently.
NotaRussianChabot
No wonder he has such longevity, he was 23 in 1984 and then he was 23 all over again in 1988.
Really taints his records if you ask me.
bluemountaindrew
Pretty crazy to come in at 19 and have the best season ever.
Turc-ington
Would be great to see the column headers lol
Former-Sand9059
It’s actually astonishing how dominant he was. I can’t think of anyone in sports that even comes close. Not Jordan, not LeBron, not Brady, not Tiger, but I also don’t know shit about sports in other places, so maybe some cricket or rugby player or something has been on that level. Still just hard to conceptualize as someone who started watching a while after he retired
These-Cod-1369
Back when goalies plopped down and never moved for rebounds
johnnymavrigg
Wow really started to drop off in his late 20s /s
minimumhatred
man, are we ever going to see somebody pull off a single 200 pt season again? Like even mcdavid if he plays all 82 games is on pace for 155, which is crazy considering only 4 players have done 150 and two of them only did it once. idk if it’s even possible in the modern era nowadays.
hopetard
26 was just a gap year of drinking and partying
yupkime
Could happen again but it would mean a lot of games would have scores 8-6 or 7-2 like that. Would the games be better to watch? Hard to say!
SINY10306
Fast forward to today, pretty amazing what McDavid is doing this season considering playing in what many would call a dead puck era.
choosenameposthack
Looks like he identified as female in his 20s 😇
ABoyNamedSault
So amazing!!!!!! No one comes close. Maybe Lemieux, but not really.
MorgenKaffee0815
’80 was the part of extremly bad goalies, no defense and 3/4th line players you would now play in beer league.
just watch games from the 80s and watch games from the 90s+ its a insane big difference
Skadi793
No one was more dominant over an extended stretch of time. The only athletes in all of sports that have had single seasons in the same ballpark would be
Babe Ruth 1921: his 457 total basis has never been approached in almost 100 years. The 119 extra-base hits are also still a record, and the 177 runs scored is an AL record, and 2nd all-time. Hit 59 HRs with 168 RBIs, .378 BA and .846 slugging. No one in almost 100 years has come close to putting up numbers like this in a single-season
Larry Bird 1986: in addition to scoring over 28 a game, pulling down 9.2 boards, and adding 7.6 assists, Larry completed the 50-40-90, shooting 52% from the field, 40% for 3 point range, and 91% from the line. He would then repeat this in 1987, becoming the only forward ever to do this twice (take note: LeBron, Jordan, or Bryant never shot 50-40-90 in their whole careers). Bird in the mid-80s was unstoppable –but even this wasn’t Gretzky level.
Nadia Comăneci 1976 Olympics: scoring six perfect 10s (first to do it) and completely blowing away all competition. She literally broke the scoreboard. As far as sports go, this one performance was the greatest, male or female, in history.
monty6666
50 goals in 39 games is the one that always gets me. That’s insane.
MertTheRipper
I’m not discrediting him or anything because Gretzky is still the best to ever fucking play the sport … But this was also when the goalies didn’t even drop to butterfly lol 200 point seasons are ridiculous and, again before I get down voted into oblivion, I still think he would dominate even in the”modern” goalie age but idk if he’d hit 200 points if goalies played how they do now lol still incredible though
Edit: fat thumbs

Gretzky was sure fun to watch when I was a kid. Seeing him live blew my mind. I seen Lemieux too in his last season he was great too…but not the great one.
TheHip41
Prettaaaaaay good
macloa
Seeing these stats are insane. But I still feel McDavid is a more skilled hockey player. Hard to compare eras, but it’s a lot tougher to score goals now. I feel if current McDavid was in Gretzkys era, he’d be putting up these jumbera
JimLahey12
My parents couldn’t afford ice skates in there 20’s lol
We-R-Doomed
Man, his slapshot was a thing of beauty.
So often, it looked like he was shooting at 65% power, but just *slicing* the puck off the ice and going for perfect placement.
Reefer_77
+520 in his career. 4th all time, highest ranked forward. Larry Robinson 722!!!, Orr 582, Bourque 527.
Dominant doesn’t do him enough….you may think he did most of his damage on the power play??
69% of his goals at even strength!!! That’s plain wicked.
Realizearealeye
Goalies sucked and had smaller equipment tho
schimpynuts
Sheesh, dem canadians…

It was a pleasure watching Wayne and Mario completely dominate in just about every game they both ever played. Wayne was more durable but both completely dominated in their own way. Both were more skilled and smarter than everyone else on the ice and their numbers bear that out. But Gretz gets the title of the most dominant team sports player in history across all professional sports because he actually did what he did. Nobody is better because nobody did what he did. His career numbers are absolutely ridiculous and I don’t see anyone ever coming close to catching them. His goals record may be in jeopardy, but his assists and points records will never be challenged.
Khripchook
In his 215 point season he played 80 games.
2 games with 7 points
3 games with 6 points
4 games with 5 points
12 games with 4 points
19 games with 3 points
21 games with 2 points
16 games with 1 point
And only 3 games without a point.

Counterpoint, he spent his 20s in Edmonton.

Wow. Watching people compare different eras is a joke. Impossible to measure players when the standard is compared to today. Gretz was legend in that era because he was ahead if tge curve. In fact, he was his own curve. McDavid today is much the same. Can’t apply presentism to different hockey eras. Diehard Oiler fan, but McDavid wouldn’t skate like he does today because one elbow, knee or shoulder to the head would end his career. Imagine Scott Steven catching him. Dynamics change, and so too does the player. Stop comparing players to different eras. GOATs come with each era. Don’t downplay those greats because “goalies sucked back then”. Uh….look at the top 10 for each season in the 80’s. If it was so easy, then why weren’t there more players getting higher point totals? In one season, Gretz’ assists alone would win him the scoring title. Nobody was even close in most of them.
sorrynoreply
Looks like he peaked early at 24. Sadlife

Another crazy Gretzky fact I learned recently is that Crosby and Ovechkin’s combined career points only surpassed Gretzky this season.
Melz13
Gretz just casually putting up 200 point seasons, just another day at the office
Mdj81sauga
2 points for a goal?
The-Reddit-Giraffe
Now here’s the fun question. Who do you think is the best of all time if both Orr and Lemieux never had health problems and play until say 36-39?

Will always be the best
I see you Mario. I see you.
92 fucking goals. Blows my mind every time.
4 200 point seasons before age 25 is insane.
