The Bruins Should Call Detroit About Simon Edvinsson
The Detroit Red Wings are a dumpster fire right now. Their former Captain asked to be traded because he couldn’t lead his team to the playoffs, as they failed to reach the playoffs during his 11 years in Detroit. They came very close the last couple of years and even held playoff spots, but in the end collapsed at the end of the season each time and didn’t make it. At the home opener, the Red Wings fans booed Larkin when he was announced before the game.
Instead of putting out the fire though, I’m going to pour gasoline on it because Elliotte Friedman announced Saturday night that Simon Edvinsson would prefer to be traded if the Red Wings are not going to sign him. It’s not an official trade request but a soft one I guess. He is willing to sign in Detroit but it would seem the two sides a very far apart and the kid just wants to play hockey.
Rumours are already swirling that the Bruins should pursue him and a loyal viewer the Angry Whopper, indeed asked for this video so I said why not. In this video, I’m going to break down what kind of player Edvinsson is, how he could help the Bruins, what it might cost to acquire him, why I think an offer sheet can’t happen, and finally the odds of this actually happening.

What would you trade for Edvinsson?
Sweeney is scary. I don't trust him.
Nope, his name sounds to much like Edmonton , never forget 88 or 90 , never !!!
Yes
Do an old school hockey trade. Lori for Edvinsson.
I'd trade for him every day and twice on Sunday. If we can sign him for around $9. But there's no way I'm giving 4 firsts. Don't need to. Two firsts and lohrei. Done.
I think the big consideration in every trade discussion is Pasta’s cup window. And Edvinsson fits that to a tee. The cap hit issue certainly complicates things. All that said, whoever this Angry Whopper guy is… he seems like a smart guy for asking for this video 😉
I'd offer Zadorov, Zellers and the TOR 1st (assuming Zadorov doesn't have DET on his no-trade list)
A team like the Bruins can offer 6x$10M and it will count as a top-tier offer sheet (5 year rule) but, I don't think anyone wants to give up 4 1sts for the guy.
If it's an Offer sheet it will be 6x$9.9M for the 2nd tier – PHI, CGY, SEA, and CAR all have the cap space and picks to make that happen.
Obviously I don't think CAR is in on him considering they don't want to pay Nikishin either. CGY is probably not doing an offer sheet because their picks are going to be high.
SEA/PHI's picks will be mid-late 1sts so, they're the best fit for an offer sheet.
PHI doesn't have a pressing need at LD so, I don't expect them to be in but, Briere has surprised everyone before
I ain't sayin nothin but not a heap of difference between Lohrei-Zellers-and 1 or 2 firsts; just sayin.
Seriously though, 2 firsts is another year outside of the first round, but I'm not mad at the 2 firsts for JJ PT JJ (of course those feels come with 2 firsts in the bank which would fly-fly on this Edvinsson deal), and if Edvinsson is of a similar tier/caliber as JJ (and it sounds like he is) then he's probably worth the picks.
But yeah, no- if Detroit wants Letourneau and/or Brunet on top of that, they can go screw.
What you said is spot on. You trade for him if the price is right. Let's not get crazy. Let's face facts. The Bruins are the middle of the pack playoff team at best. They looked good on their road trip. Until they faced a real contender. So sacrificing the future for Edvinsson isn't the answer.
That said, he could become a huge part of that future. He could be a long-term solution. As long as he is making a managable salary as well. To me, 9 million range.
If that can be done; Lorhei, 1st, 2nd, and a minor player like Brunet, Blanar, or in that range.
They say no…. bye.
He would be a long-term answer for down the line. Not for this year.
A futures based package won't work for the Bruins.
Not only does it not make sense, they would need to move cap out to fit Edvinsson in. Even Lohrei on his own isn't enough cap.
It would likely need to be Zacha, Mittlestadt or Zadorov getting shipped out to make the cap work
These bruins trade rumours feel like false hope everytime
The main problem with trade for Edvinsson is that it's hard to come up with resonable price that Detroit will agree with couse that's resonable for them is to not trade him and give a guy an extention. 10*7 is not a big ask, they got the space too, just put the fries in the bag, Ilitch. The other problem is that other teams like Pittsburgh, Carolina or St Louise need him more and pay more to not play in same division as Detroit.
You NEVER trade for players that quit on their team, NEVER – Hellebuyck, Larkin, Edvinsson
Put a package together and bring him in and get ardvisson back the 2nd line is going to struggle big time
The Boston Bruins young center depth organizationally:
Hagans Minten Leterneau Poitras Locmelis Moore Duran Spicer Chandler Pelosi Yemelov
Boston's Young Defense Depth?
Liam Petterson
4 lower ceiling late rounders (Brunet, Groenwold, Blanar (Johansson) and…
THAT'S IT!
The Bruins also have good young players at wing in their organization with Khustidinov, Zellers, Bartholdson, Simpson, Kotkov & Olson
Even their goaltending depth is solid with Swayman & Dipietro now but with good, young goalie prospects such as Ivanov, Henriquez & Lundgren
What Boston doesn't have is much of anything in terms of younger d-men at the big club level or even in their Farm System
Borgan, Zadorov, Hampus Lindholm & Clifton are all over 30
Aspirot, Harris & Jokiharju are 7th-8th d-men & not Boston's future at defense
McAvoy is no spring chicken at 28, soon to be 29, either
Again, the Bruins defensive pipeline is miserable overall
It houses one, 2nd round pick with a long development curve in Liam Pettersson
Then it's 4, 4th-6th rounders in Brunet, Blanar, Groenwold & Johansson
After that it's a black hole & those 4, late rounders have lower NHL ceilings if they're ever even able to reach them
And before you pencil in any of those late round defenders into Bruins uniforms…
Less than 15% of 4th-7th round draft picks will play 100 or more NHL games
Don Sweeney himself has drafted 16, 3rd-7th round d-men since 2015
The total number of NHL games played by those 16, 3rd-7th round drafted d-men to date?
ONE FN NHL game!!! ONE!!!
Frederic Brunet's ONE NHL game last season!!!
So again, the Bruins have next to nothing at defense in their pipeline but Liam Petterson & few late rounders no one should expect much from
The only way to acquire Top 4 defensive talent beyond drafting it, is trading for it or offer sheets
Fans might balk at a 1st, multiple 1sts and or a prospects like Leterneau Zellers Petterson MOORE Brunet or Simpson being involved in a trade for Simon Edvinsson but…
Edvinsson is a unicorn at defense in the NHL
He's already a true number 2 with #1 upside still. His skill & skating ability at 6'6 is also not something you see in the NHL often
No Bruins fan is lamenting the two 1sts they gave up for Perterka already as they've seen his high end speed & skill & how it affects their lineup
They'd see the same impact with Evidsson on the team in terms of their back end
Their Farm System is there to either build & supplement their roster or to be used to acquire talent
The Bruins have done little of either during Don Sweeney's tenure as GM
However, like the Pertetka trade proved, Boston now has better assets to improve the club in a way that they haven't been able to do so since Don Sweeney took over initially back in 2015
Boston also isn't the best development organization nor are they the best at giving their young players enough opportunities to develop properly at all levels
When you combine that with the derth of talent they have in their Farm System at defense and how too many of their defenders today are older in Borgan, Zadorov, Clifton, Hampus Lindholm & even Charlie McAvoy…
It'd make a ton of sense for Boston to trade for Simon Edvinsson
However, unless the trade offer is Lohrei, Poitras & a 2028 3rd round pick most Bruins homers will say that's too much to give up & that Edvinsson is no better than Mason Lohrei, which is so laughable it's not even worth addressing
Meanwhile back on planet earth the Bruins were crap defensively & on the PK last year, they don't look much different this year, far too many of their future/current dmen are either old or they're just guys that you don't want anyway like Jokiharju & Harris & they have next to nothing in their pipeline at defense
They should again, 100% try to trade for Simon Edvinsson or try to go after Filip Horonoek in Vancouver, which is something they apparently tried doing already recently
Again, trades or offer sheets are the only way Boston is going to get a Top 4 Dman any time soon
No Top 4 Dmen are coming from their system any time soon and Top 4Ds rarely hit the UFA market
But I expect you'll get a mountain of don't trade for Simon Edvinsson, he sucks responses,….
I'd try this type of offer first
A 1st, Liam Pettersson, Lohrei & Cooper Simpson
Or
A 1st, Liam Pettersson, Brunet & Will Moore
If they are insistent on either two 1sts or that Leterneau or Zellers have to be involved in the deal, I probably have some pause
Did’t I took this up for like 4 weeks ago? That the B should go for him ..
i say no way for Edvinsson… rather figure out a way to get Larkin instead (but i know he doesnt want to come)
I myself say wait and see what happens when McAvoy comes back
I personally like Nikishin over him. Nikishin has a better shot, slightly better skater and the Bruins really lack any offensive threats on the blue line. Edvinsson is very similar to Hampus and while I am very very worried about Hampus getting another injury, I dont see the fit as much. Brunet can play off side third pair in either situation
I feel like trading anyone to Detroit is like perma banning their career to the shadow realm.
Yeah, I just think it’s way too much.
I thought teams could not offer sheet players beyond a limited window during the offseason? Do we know how much the player is actually asking for and what the Wings have offered?
I think Edvinsson could be someone to play with McAvoy. I'd imagine any trade would involve Lohrei going back so Brunet would be free to play 3rd pairing. Which given the very small sample size at the NHL level, I'd be more comfortable with Freddy in that spot than the top pair.
Patience is very likely the better play here. Lohrei has been solid for us, while I think Clifton and Aspirot have been our worst defenders. And like you've stated, we don't have McAvoy back yet. That said, the longer this goes, the more time it will take for Edvinsson to get into "playing form". Players who hold out and miss camp tend to take a lot longer to catch up. Remember Swayman 2 years ago? Same thing happened with Nylander in Toronto when he held out for several months a few years ago.
Do you think the Barkov injury in Florida might push them to get Larkin? That might also influence how the Wings approach things if they go full on fire sale.
Thanks for this awesome analysis and for letting us laugh some more at the Red Wings. What a mess. The rumors are that Horcoff just doesn't have the authority to make these deals without getting approval/s — and now everyone is criticizing him as well as the owner. Hilariously, there is now a TON of revisionist fans saying the last 10 years were never Yzerman's fault after all and that it was the owner to blame instead. Sure, that's why S.Y. is now the owner's advisor, lol. What have you heard — anything interesting?
Does a first, zellers, and Loheri get it done
Makes no sense to empty the cupboards for this guy I agree, if it makes sense, jump on it but only if it makes sense!
Odds I’ll give it 2% Don’t Trade Lohrei!
Would rather get Nikishkin honestly. Im not big on on edvidsson or hroenek, they are both around the hampus lindholm level which is not a top pairing d man. I also dont think we need any more European players, we need more Canadians. I also dont believe enough in the current core to sell the future, i need to see more unless its for Werenski or another true stud.
Thanks for the video. I think you nailed it for first rounders on an offer she is too much
Trade Lohrai
for Sdvinsson .
Why havent the Canes & Wings just swapped Edvinsson & Nikishin???
Edvinsson is an appealing player especially that young. Bruins can’t afford to give up multiple first round picks and top prospects at this time.
Who's going to go for him?
Trade Aspirot & Mason for him?
I say no,the bruins have all they need on defense, let brunet and loheri play until they get better, we have Aspirot and even others in the minors .somebody is getting thrown to the wolves when Mcavoy returns as it is .they're is a total logjam on D. The Briuns need PK guys wicked bad,the few good penalty killers we have, are getting totally gassed and then scored apon, because they are always left out there way too long, with no backup. They need good replacements after that first, frenzied, exhaustive minute. I figure, aquiring one more solid PK specialist ,a full time player, that could be put right into the fold,( preferably a veteran 4th line center who could really produce offensively as well ), would be for us, a massive home run. We absolutely do need scoring on the forth line, and I mean a SERIOUS THREAT. Kuraly is really, really good at the shutdown part of his game,no doubt, but he doesn't score regularly, or set up either Tanner or Kastilic in vital scoring positions, Those critical types of chances that produce finished goals for his line. This lack of getting enough consistent points to be respected as every shift threats, is more evident already this season.. This is a big, big flaw, because other teams know about this glaring weakness now, and are exploiting it fully.I actually wish we went out and got Vladimir Tarasenko,(or a similarly grizzled offensive stalwart),he was on the forth line in Minnesota, and he scored 25 goals (yes, he is a defensive liability, but in between those other two here,he would definitively shine for the Bruins ).Imagine what Tanner and Kastilic would do if someone like him was dishing out passes and then, they in turn, were setting up him for goals? Oh my god!! Creating 4 strong lines, one's that you can keep rolling out defensively, and that can all really score coming back the other way, that's the formula that beats the bag off of any thing else in this league currently.(and this concept is, in fact, the very blueprint for the 2011 Bruins that won "Lord Stanley's Cup" ).And then,to make things even better, you could rest Kuraly and utilize him solely for the purpose of the PK,where he shines best, he would be dominant and totally focused in that role. And as for Potrias, ….he's kind of brittle, and he gets pushed off the puck in mid stride too easily.Hes got great hands, amazing offensive skills, but when a goon from the other team gets sent out there, and then shoves him hard into the boards,he's out for a month. He lacks durability, I say showcase him in the big show, and then include him in a package trade, if he makes it to the deadline un injured.
