Quinn Hughes remains one of the biggest contract stories of the NHL offseason, and his extension with the Minnesota Wild is still unresolved. Now Elliotte Friedman has identified the point when he would begin to worry: the start of the regular season. That does not mean Hughes is leaving Minnesota, but an unsigned star defenseman once the season begins would create a completely different level of pressure.
Hughes has plenty of leverage after producing 76 points in 74 regular-season games and another 15 points in 11 playoff games during his first season with Minnesota. With questions surrounding contract length, salary, timing, and the upcoming CBA changes, the Wild and Hughes have several important decisions ahead. The biggest question now is whether they can reach an agreement before the situation becomes a major distraction.
