Let’s say Eklund puts up 30 pts this year in the NHL. Doesn’t mark him as a busy, but definitely not enough to want to give him an expensive contract. Offer him a longer term low cap hit contract in the hopes that he breaks out later given how young he is.
Obviously, I hope Eklund has a phenomenal rookie season and we have the “good problem to have” situation where we offer him a bit more. I think Dubas’ strategy here is worth noting, but only using situationally.
A gamble !! Isles luck it would flop !!
Nobody yet, but I'm keeping an eye on Gleb Veremyev. 6'5", 218 center who plays physical and has good defense. He showed some snarl in preseason last year. He could be a solid NHL 4th liner next year. That might be worth a $2 – $2.5 million long term gamble NEXT YEAR if he does better in the AHL.

No way. Generational talents deserve 8 year deals, other than that the team are role players. You are better paying a little more at the right time. For every home-run that a GM hits using this method they will have 5-6 deals that backfire, just ask Lou. As the video said, We hope the Isles have learned their lessons
Do you see Schaefer, Gustafsson, Aitcheson and George being the top 4 to start 27-28 or maybe 28-29, with the likes of Pelech, Pulock and say Romanov or DeAngelo moved on from by then?
I think an 8 year deal puts unnecessary pressure on the kid. Let him play a year and see what you have. Like Lou says, "If you have time, use it."
