  1. I was pulling super hard for Washington to finally beat the Pens and win a cup. Took about 20 years, but it happened. Looking forward to a final Pittsburgh Washington playoff matchup in the first round.

  2. Caps are trying desperately hard to keep the playoff window open for 1-2yrs for Ovie. The League is too good nowadays so I don't know how well that will play out…

I can imagine that Ovie will start becoming like Iginla at the end of his career, his numbers will start to decline next season…

  3. It was nice to see the Capitals actaully win the cup for once, and allow Ovechkin to be a cup winning player, since he deserved it. Just their bad luck I suppose that they had him in the same era as Pittsburgh had Crosby and Malkin (an iconic rivalry).
They have clearly declined since then, but not like they suddenly fell off a cliff. Now they'll have to get a new generation superstar to base their team around. (Or maybe they already have? 😶)

  4. Will Ovechkin still be playing in 10 years? No, he's not Jagr. But it's been a wild time having him in the league. Looking forward to him no longer scoring at will on my team.

  5. technically – its not that they lowballed Barry Trotz. he had a preexisting extension clause built into his 5 year contract that covered the entire Stanley Cup window of that roster. yes he got the cup finally in the in the very last year, but it was literally a buzzer beater as far as his contract went. he didnt win multiple cups during his tenure to make it an absolute imperative to sign him back at higher money, which would have required the Capitals to break their own contract and set a precedent. they didnt "choose to lowball" him, they chose to not set a precedent of renegotiating their contracts. Trotz felt like he deserved more after winning the cup so he moved on and the Caps management found that decision totally understandable.

the situation wasnt just as simple as "he won you the cup, give him more money", there was extenuating circumstances that pre-existed the Cup win and made the situation a little more complex.
