The NHL’s offer sheet landscape may have changed forever.

With the Philadelphia Flyers submitting an offer sheet to Leo Carlsson and that multiple teams were exploring the possibility of targeting Pavel Mintyukov, the league is entering a new era where young stars may no longer be untouchable.

In this episode of The Starr & D’Amico Show, we discuss why these moves could have a major impact on the Montreal Canadiens.

Are the Canadiens vulnerable to losing one of their young core players in the coming years? How well protected are they with contracts for players like Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovský and Ivan Demidov? Could Kent Hughes eventually turn the tables and use offer sheets to acquire elite young talent from around the NHL?

We break down how offer sheets work, why teams seem more willing to use them, and whether this could become one of the NHL’s biggest offseason weapons.

  1. Verbeek is in a lose lose situation; has lost massive cost and cap value for his team if he matches or loses his potentially elite 1C if he takes the picks which have a lot of value but are a guarantee of nothing. If he had gotten ahead of this like Hughes has done he would have had him for way less.

  2. This 18 mil offer sheet has just crippled both teams which is good for habs because both the ducks and flyers were growing contenders within the same timeline… it sucks but i would let him go to philly.. let the overpay destroy the flyers locker room.. if carlson thinks he should be paid that much then he is a cancer to team culture.. u think zegras will be happy making half of leo? No fn way!

  3. We talk about all the great things this would mean for Philly, but the same thing applies to the Ducks. Yes, Verbeek likely put himself in this mess but all those good things still apply if they match.

  4. Hey Marco, any idea if Verbeek has the power to sign Carlsson to that sort of deal on his own or does the bonus structure imply bringing ownership into the discussion? If so, is that complicating matters?

  5. Thanks, guys😏Today I woke up and said to my wife, “It’s Cablatel. Peace of mind you can count on…” She looked at me with a “WTF?” expression. The problem is that we live in Santiago, Chile, and she has no fucking idea what I was talking about.😂😂

  6. Another way to think the Carlsson's contract is… it's equivalent to a team having a 5m bad contract this year, 4m next year, etc.. Most teams have one or more bad contracts on a team.

This is still better dealing with a bad contract temporarily than losing a #1 center when you are on the verge of starting your cup contention cycle and maybe not find another #1 center for the next 10 years.

  7. If Anaheim matches Carlson offer sheet and they are desperate to unload cap space would Kreider be a good candidate to play on Montreal's top 6?

  8. Gauthier now knows what he'd get paid if receiving offersheets (e.g. he could try signing a one year contract to get there).. so he can pressure the Ducks. Whether Carlsson leaves or not, Gauthier (and other stars in the league) are now in power.

Ducks are likely to sign Gauthier long term and trade away another contract (Vatrano, Kreider or Killhorn)

  9. We sometimes say Carlsson is the only winner in this situation… but he's also handcuffing the team he's playing with and reduces his chances to win… I guess he'll be able to reevaluate his priorities in 5 years.

  10. My concern is what does someone coming in earning over market value do to the dressing room. If I'm consciously underpaid alongside my colleagues because we are sacrificing to achieve our collective goal. If someone comes in who doesn't make the sacrifice I'd be worried about how they're perceived. Unless their performance is above the existing group than it's probably nul.

  11. the Ducks should 100% not match the offer, take the 4 first round pick
Zegras filed for abritration and he has the same amount of point the Leo Carlsson had had year.

Zegras is waiting for the 10 and trust me he will too ask for 18M

  12. Here's a funny point, cutter is going to get more because Carlsson is getting 18m but zegras is going to get half what Carlsson does when he had basically identical stats……..that's what's called bs

  13. Making a 67 point guy the highest paid in the entire league based on what he MIGHT do is silly 🤷 So is saying " Philly should challenge Carolina for tops " lmfao . . . No wonder I've never heard of you guys , hot garbage takes
