Goodbye to Special Sharks Season | Projecting Celebrini Extension, Boyle on Cagnoni EP 127

We say goodbye to a special San Jose Sharks season!

But before that, Sharks legend Dan Boyle remembers the time that he walked Brent Burns.

Also, Zubair shares a great “hockey” movie that he watched recently.

So where did Sheng vote Macklin Celebrini for the Hart Trophy? GM Mike Grier, in his exit interview, gave a spirited case.

Will Celebrini be the next captain of the San Jose Sharks?

Recent history gives a good idea of what Celebrini’s extension should look like.

What did Dan think of Luca Cagnoni’s recent NHL call-up?

Would you trade Michael Misa for Zach Werenski? Dan and Keegan have a perhaps surprising answer.

We discuss what the San Jose Sharks blueline might look like next year.

What about head coach Ryan Warsofsky? What did we think about his performance this season?

What does Dan think of Eric Pohlkamp?

We get into a thoughtful conversation about Shakir Mukhamadullin: What will it take to get him to the next level?

Finally, we each give thanks for all your support this season!

  1. Sharks would be crazy to trade Misa. This kid is going to be a star and in 5 years (or less) would be a 1C on most other teams. Werenski (and the rest of the Blue Jackets) folded down the stretch. I think we potentially already have that top D guy in Dickinson. He will be that guy. They just have to let him play his game. He showed signs, especially early, that he can carry that puck out and get the team going. He will be that guy.

  2. If Celebrini's everybody's #2 pick for Hart, and McDavid, MacKinnon, and Kuch split #1 for similar performances, he mathematically could win it.

  3. Peng, you're using the wrong cap for determining 15%. His contract extension starts in the 2027-28 year. 15% of that 113.5M cap will be 17.025M per year. So he'll slightly eclipse Kaprizov for the richest contract in the NHL and be in the same Salary Cap % as his peers. I expect 8 x 17.025 = 136.2M total contract.

  4. I’ll again remind that Cagnoni is 21 on opening night and Boyler didn’t commence his first full NHL season until he was 24. It’s not a make or break for Cagnoni in September/October but it might be his most wide-open shot. Cags is still putting on muscle and hopefully will have a good offseason.

  5. There is no excuse for playing Leddy over Mukh… unless he was injured there isn’t a valid reason. Mukh gave the team a better chance to win than leddy or even Klingberg who was basically the hockey version of a terrorist. Leddy had maybe two decent games and rest were absolute dogshit. If the point was to win then Mukh would have been playing more. I appreciate Sheng and all the work he does but arguing for Leddy over Mukh hurts his credibility.

  6. If they don't make the playoffs next year, it's a massive massive massive failure. The Pacific is weak and they have to learn about playoff hockey FOR their development. Also, if they regress, the fan base will take longer to come back.

  7. Eric Karlson is a -100 player in his career. The juice ain't worth the squeeze. He's the opposite of Nicholas Lindstrom

  8. Holy sh*t finally pinned Sheng down made him stop equivocating and have an opinion. Accuracy in written works, aka your instinct to constantly caveat and clarify are not helpful in this arena. An entertaining podcast means letting your opinions your punditry out. We want to see what you think! Or why are we even watching. Two different skillsets. If you want to play the "straight" man in the context where Keegan, Boyle, and Zubair are offering their opinions you can do that without constantly tamping down their opinions. You can do it by saying "consensus around the league is X", "what I'm hearing from outside scouts is Y".

  9. Love the podcast. Can you consider adding topics with time stamps in case we want to listen to specific topics? Otherwise I end up having to fast forward through things manually I’m not particularly interested in

  10. For the Sharks to be a contending team, the owners need to spend money! We had almost 15 million spent on players this year, the have not seen the ice in YEARS! JUST to meet the league minimum….
