DISCIPLINED APPROACH: How Mike Grier PLANS the San Jose Sharks Offseason for Sustainable Growth

San Jose Sharks face pivotal offseason decisions as GM Mike Grier navigates high-stakes contract talks and a critical draft. Will franchise cornerstones Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith lock in long-term extensions before the CBA shift, and is Mario Ferraro set to command a big payday elsewhere as he tests unrestricted free agency?

JD Young breaks down Grier’s strategy to improve the Sharks’ blue line and special teams without derailing their rebuild. Key topics include potential draft pick trades, Grier’s “best player available” approach versus drafting for need, and how prospects like Luca Cagnoni could bolster the defensive corps. With the Sharks aiming to avoid the fate of teams that rushed their rebuilds, is sustainable success finally within reach in San Jose?

  1. 😊😊😊we need 2 more in defense if not 3
    Sweep by flames
1 by Vancouver killed our chances we close their that's why we need to close the doors on those teams next year by getting more in defense to win championships periods and defense wins titles i think this is our goal this summer playing defense 1st we going to be different team in different look

  2. Improve the defense, develop the young players, keep Asky on a short leash and get a new coaching staff

  3. Ferraro testing FA is Griers way of saying “your not worth what you think
You are so go ahead and see”

  4. JD, what assets you think are on the table? Bysteadt seems primed to be apart of the deal with 1) our center depth 2) the lack center depth in this draft

  5. -We're in an interesting position, where we should be enough to make playoffs next season (assuming we get a good 1st pair) and actually get to the 2nd round since we're in the worst division. We can do this without having to sign expensive FAs that may ruin us. We can afford to still make playoffs and take our time choosing who really fits on this team before we give them massive contracts.

-This season ex canucks GM Allvin mentioned there was a divide in the locker room from guys who were ready to win now and guys who weren't. It seemed at the time they were adding all the pieces on paper to become contenders, but going fast in a rebuild probably has more examples of it NOT working out than the latter. Look at them now.

-The BPA thing I'm taking with a grain of salt from MG from now on. When he picked Wang over Fiddler that was a very strange move considering Wang probably would've still been available. And if you really wanted him that badly you probably could've traded up to a later 2nd for him without giving up too much.

-Sure would be nice to have a top 5 pick instead, I'm erring on them trading our pick for a D that's ready sooner/now. It'd be real nice if Smits was still available at 10 but I'm not getting my hopes up. I have an ominous feeling that if we keep the pick we might actually go for Lin even though he's not what you'd expect from MG's FO. But after the Wang pick, maybe…
